Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ah, we got here just as it's starting to erupt! Where is the geyser known as Old Faithful located?

Answer: Wyoming

Old Faithful is located in Yellowstone National Park in Teton County, Wyoming. Yellowstone was the first national park in the world. Named in 1870, Old Faithful erupts about every 91 minutes, on average.
2. That is a huge factory complex down there. I think they make automobiles. Where do you suppose we are?

Answer: Dearborn, Michigan

Known as the River Rouge Plant because of its location on the Rouge River in Dearborn, Michigan near Detroit, this Ford Motor Company auto manufacturing complex is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) wide and 1 mile (1.6 km) long. When completed in 1928, it included 93 buildings and in the 1930s employed over 100,000 workers.
3. Hmm, that man looks like he knows his way around a ship. And I believe that quote on the stone is from the Bible. Where in America is this landmark located?

Answer: Gloucester, Massachusetts

The statue is part of the Gloucester (Massachusetts) Fishermen's Memorial, erected in 1923 on the 300th anniversary of the settling of the town. The quote is from Psalm 107, verse 23 in the Christian Bible. Always a fisherman's town, Gloucester has had its share of heartache.

The 2000 movie "The Perfect Storm" was about the Gloucester fishing boat Andrea Gail, whose six-man crew did not survive the Halloween Nor'easter of 1991. Over the years more than 5,300 men who sailed from Gloucester were lost at sea.
4. Now, wait a minute! Since when does McDonald's model the children's play areas of their restaurants after a flying saucer? Where did we land this time?

Answer: Roswell, New Mexico

Known as the UFO McDonald's, the restaurant is in Roswell, New Mexico site of an alleged UFO crash in 1947. Spaceship crash or weather balloon crash, neither side has proven their case. If you find yourself in Roswell, there is a UFO museum in town and there are several souvenir stands where you can buy kitschy trinkets or the occasional 'real piece of debris'.
5. There's something you don't see every day: a building with murals made from crops. It says it's the Mitchell Corn Palace; where can it be found?

Answer: South Dakota

The Mitchell Corn Palace is in Mitchell, South Dakota. It is a multi-purpose arena and a popular tourist attraction. The picture shows the third iteration of the Palace, originally built in 1892 to try to attract settlers to the area. The murals on the building are made from corn and other grains. It costs about $130,000 (U.S.) per year to decorate the building.
6. Good grief! Can you feel the ground shaking under us? But we're miles away from...what? Where are we?

Answer: Cape Canaveral, Florida

This picture shows the liftoff of the final mission of the space shuttle Atlantis from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida in July 2011. Cape Canaveral was called Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973. People who have observed launches there say the ground really does shake under foot.
7. This is Bryce Canyon National Park. Yes, it's on this planet. Do you know what state it is in?

Answer: Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is in southwestern Utah and named after Ebenezer Bryce, who settled in the area in 1874. The tall spires, known as hoodoos, were formed from erosion and frost weathering of the soft rock in the canyon, which is really a series of amphitheaters. This is a place so alien that it makes you shake your head, rub your eyes and ask yourself if you're awake.
8. This looks like an old Spanish mission. Oh, it's San Juan Capistrano. There's a story about it and some birds. Do you know where it's located?

Answer: California

Mission San Juan Capistrano is located in the city of the same name in California. Founded by Franciscan missionaries around 1775, the mission's roof was destroyed in an 1812 earthquake. Soon cliff swallows started nesting in the rafters. The townspeople noticed that they left on October 23rd each year (to fly to Argentina) and always returned on April 19th. Today, fewer return each year but they still come back. It became such a phenomenon that the Ink Spots had a hit record in 1940 with the song "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano".
9. That's quite a monument! It must be for someone important. Yes, it's for Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen, one of the founders of the Green Mountain Boys, a state militia. In which state is General Allen's monument located?

Answer: Vermont

The tomb of Ethan Allen is located in the Greenmount Cemetery in Burlington, Vermont. General Allen led the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in the Revolutionary War and the Green Mountain Boys harried the British troops throughout the war. In colonial times, Vermonters and New York residents - "Yorkers" - did not get along well.

The New Yorkers were always after Vermont's territory. Exchanges among the two groups frequently devolved into fisticuffs. The statue of Allen was raised on a 42 foot (12.8 m) shaft so his spirit could look above the surrounding trees and see across Lake Champlain to New York state. That is his index finger that the General has lifted toward New York. Among Allen's last wishes were that he be buried with weapons and that his friend James Hawley "draw good liquor" for the funeral guests.
10. Those buildings are quite a sight. This looks like a monument to art deco or something. Oh wait, it really is an art deco district. Where is it located?

Answer: Miami Beach, Florida

The Miami, Florida Art Deco Historic District, with over 800 Art Deco buildings within a square mile, is located in the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach. The buildings harken back to the early 20th century when Miami was discovered as a vacation spot and given to excess.
