Answer: Fortress Louisbourg

Fortress Louisbourg is the largest 18th century fortified town in North America. Restored by the Canadian government in the 1960s and 70s, it is a wonderful place to visit to take a trip back through time.
2. Another French fort, Port-Royal was not much more than a fortified palisade. This was was Champlain's second settlement. What was this home away from home was called?

Answer: The Habitation

Located in the Annapolis Valley, the Habitation was built in 1605 and replaced a small settlement on an Isle St. Croix in the Bay of Fundy where Champlain and his men spent a miserable first winter.

Answer: Halifax Citadel (Fort George)

The Citadel is located above the city and is well known for its clock tower, a gift from the Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (Queen Victoria's father) in 1803.

The British forces had to scale the steep cliff from the St. Lawrence River. The defeat of the French put all of French Canada into British hands.

Answer: Fort Henry

Located at Kingston, Ontario, Fort Henry was later rebuilt when the Rideau Canal connecting Lake Ontario and Ottawa was constructed making this an even more vital link in Canadian trade routes.

Answer: Fort George and Fort Erie

Fort George is located at Niagara-on-the-Lake, while Fort Erie is on the Canadian side of the Niagara River across from Buffalo. Fort Niagara was originally a French fort and is located at the Lake Ontario end of the river on the American side. The other forts I made up.

Answer: Fort Rouillé/Toronto

Fort Rouillé (Toronto) was eventually burned to keep it from falling into British hands. The name Toronto was originally applied to what is now Lake Simcoe and to the Humber River. Fort York was the later British fort which protected the small town of 'muddy' York which grew into the city of Toronto.
8. The fort which became the city of Winnipeg is located at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine River. Which fort is this?

Answer: Fort Garry

Upper Fort Garry (to distinguish it from Lower Fort Garry 32 km downriver) was rebuilt several times due to flooding. Although only the main gate to the fort still exists, the site was designated a National Historic Site in 1924.

Answer: Fort Whoop Up

Fort Whoop Up was the most notorious of several forts built in Canadian territory by American whiskey traders in order to fleece the Indians by trading rot-gut whiskey for valuable furs. It was forcibly closed by the Northwest Mounted Police who later used the location as a outpost.
