Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My father was a teacher and described me as a born criminal. My godfather was a member of the Royal Bavarian family. I kept a diary from the age of 10 until I was 24 years old. I trained as a soldier with the 11th Bavarian Regiment.

Answer: Heinrich Himmler.

Himmler was born on the 7th of October, 1900. He was a major figure in the Nazi Party and was the leader of the SS (Reichsführer-SS).
He was obsessed with war, and once he became a Nazi he also became obsessed with the occult.

When it became obvious that Germany was heading for defeat, Himmler attempted to broker a peace deal with the allies, which enraged Hitler, who had regarded Himmler as a loyal lapdog.
2. I helped create the German Workers Party (DAP) and during a DAP meeting in September 1919 I approached Hitler and handed him a book called, "My Political Awakening". At the request of Hitler, I later changed the name of the DAP to the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazi Party).

Answer: Anton Drexler.

Drexler was born in 1884 and was a co-founded of the DAP (that later became the Nazi Party). He left the Party in 1923 and re-joined 10 years later. He died at the age of 57 on 24 February 1942 and was practically forgotten.
3. I was born in 1894 and was Hitler's close friend. I spent time in Landsberg prison for my involvement in the Beer Hall Putsch. I was made the deputy Führer in 1933.

Answer: Rudolf Hess.

Rudolf Hess created a stir when he left Germany on 10 May 1941 in a Messerschmitt Bf 100. He flew to Britain and parachuted into Scotland - and was sent to the Tower of London.

For those interested, a great book to read is "The Murder of Rudolf Hess" by Dr. Hugh Thomas. It makes claims of a conspiracy theory, and hints at the fact that the "Hess" that flew to Scotland was a double, and provides evidence by the author. Well worth the read!
4. I was born in 1905 with the first name of Berthold. I was the Minister for Armaments and War Production for the Third Reich.

Answer: Albert Speer.

When Fritz Todt (the Minister of Armaments) died in 1942, Speer was immediately given the position by Hitler.
Albert Speer joined the Nazi party in 1932. He was Hitler's personal architect from 1934. Speer arranged the concept of using anti-aircraft search lights, facing upwards into the sky, to create a "wall of light" at the Nuremberg Rallies.
Speer designed the new Reich Chancellery.
5. Heinrich Himmler fought during WWI and received the Iron Cross First Class for bravery, something that appealed to and impressed Hitler.

Answer: False

Himmler was too young to actively take part in the fighting on the front during the First World War. He made up for it in World War II by becoming one of the Nazi's most feared members. He was not very good with the horrific side of war though, when it came to witnessing a mass execution of Jews he almost fainted from the sight of it.
6. Which of these statements about Hermann Göring is incorrect?

Answer: He died at the end of the hangman's noose after being convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg Trial.

Göring flew fighter planes during WW1 and won the Iron Cross. After the death of the "Red Baron" the unit was commanded by Wilhelm Reinhard, and then by Göring.

Göring was originally in charge of the Gestapo.
On 20 April, 1934 Göring appointed Himmler as the acting chief of the Gestapo in Prussia. On 17 June, 1936 Hitler appointed Himmler as the Reichsführer-SS and leader of the Gestapo.

Göring was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to hang. He managed to avoid execution by swallowing a cyanide capsule the night before.
7. I was born in 1900 and served in the 55th Field Artillery Regiment during World War I. I would later join the 'Freikorps' and after spending time in prison, I joined the Nazi Party. Hitler was a witness at my wedding and I named one of my children after him. Who am I?

Answer: Martin Bormann.

Bormann was Hitler's private secretary and a very close friend, especially during the final days of the Third Reich. Hilter referred to Bormann as his "most loyal Party comrade". Bormann was a witness of Hitler's Political testament and was also a witness for Hitler's wedding to Eva Braun.

There is still a debate that rages about the fate of Bormann after the fall of the Third Reich. Did he die? Or did he manage to escape and lived his life in full? You be the judge - see the following links:

8. I was born in 1897. I was unable to serve in the armed forces during Wordl War I and joined the Nazi Party in 1922. In 1926, I made the famous demand 'that the petty bourgeois Adolf Hitler be expelled from the National Socialist Party'. Who am I?

Answer: Dr. Joseph Goebbels.

Goebbels did not participate in World War I because of a crippled foot.

In 1922 he joined the Nazi Party and even though he wanted Hitler expelled, he soon changed his mind. A loyal supporter of Hitler, Goebbels became Reich Minister for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda in 1933.
9. I was born in 1891, and during WWI I was a flying observer, until I was wounded during in aerial combat. I joined the Nazi party in 1923 and by 1931 I was made an SS-Standartenführer (Colonel) on the staff of Heinrich Himmler. I did not get to see the outcome of the Third Reich as I died in 1942.

Answer: Fritz Todt.

Fritz Todt founded the Organisation Todt. He was responsible for the construction of military fortifications and the super highways (Autobahns). He was the Reich Minister for Armaments and Munitions until 1942 when he was killed in a plane crash. Albert Speer stepped into his role not long after his death.
10. I was born in 1900 and was a pilot during World War I. I won a number of medals during WWI, and became a member of the Bavarian police in 1919. I was present at the Wannsee Conference in 1942 and achieved the rank of Gruppenführer. In 1943, I rounded up over 88,000 Jews and sent them to their death at Auschwitz. I was sent to Italy in June, 1943 to find out why Italian Jews were avoiding the 'Final Solution'.

Answer: Heinrich Müller.

Heinrich Müller was the Chief of the Gestapo and a main player in the extermination of the Jews. He was a subordinate of Reinhard Heydrich. His nickname was "Gestapo Müller". He was last seen inside the Führer bunker on 1 May 1945.
