Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Goebbels was born in 1897 in Rheydt, which is now part of Moenchengladbach. What denomination was he in his youth?

Answer: Roman Catholic

Goebbels was born and raised in a Catholic household by his parents, Friedrich Goebbels and Katharina Odenhausen. Later in life Joseph turned his back on Roman Catholicism and claimed his religion to be Nazism.
2. Goebbels was one of the most educated Nazi officials and as his name suggests he earned a Ph.D. What subjects did he study?

Answer: Literature and Philosophy

Despite having a Ph.D in literature and philosophy, Goebbels struggled to get a job. Much of his own writing wasn't accepted by publishers including his autobiographical novel, "Michael". He also failed as a playwright as both his scripts were turned down by producers.
3. Goebbels was crippled from a disease he suffered from in his youth. What part of his body was deformed?

Answer: Leg

Goebbels suffered from osteomyelitis which affects the bone marrow. As he developed this at the age of seven the disease affected his growth. He stood at just 5 foot 4 inches (roughly 163cm) and had one leg which was far shorter than the other. He had to wear a leg brace for most of his life and this caused him to be at the centre of ridicule throughout his schooldays, but whilst attending university in Heidelberg he told fellow students that he had been injured in battle despite the fact he had been turned down for military service.
4. Dr. Joseph Goebbels joined the Nazi party in 1924 though he altered this fact to say he joined in which of the following years?

Answer: 1922

Dr. Goebbels did this to make him appear to be one of the very early members of the party. Other members who did this have included the Fuehrer, Adolf Hitler. Evidence of both of these forgeries can be seen in the obvious alteration of the date of entry on the party membership cards.
5. Which ministry was Goebbels in charge of during the Third Reich?

Answer: Ministry of Public Enlightenment & Propaganda

Goebbels played a huge part in producing anti-Semitic and Nazi propaganda through his control of all the media, including movies, radios and newspapers. Every single article, broadcast and playscript had to go through Goebbels with severe consequences for people who disregarded his wishes.

He managed to brainwash the minds of most German people by using what is now dubbed, the 'Goebbels Technique,' also known as the big lie. This meant that anti-Semitic propaganda was shown to the German public over and over again, which eventually led to the majority of Germans actually believing it.
6. Which actress did Joseph Goebbels have an affair with? (The affair was eventually ended on the orders of Adolf Hitler).

Answer: Lída Baarová

His wife, Magda Quant, found out about this affair and contacted Adolf Hitler. As Hitler was the godfather of the Goebbels' children and quite empathetic towards Magda's situation, he ordered the end of the affair.
7. In 1942, Goebbels attempted suicide.

Answer: False

Goebbels did attempt suicide but on October 15th, 1938. There were a few reasons which pushed him to suicide including his affair with Lída Baarová and the knowledge that his wife had found out about the affair. Furthermore, Goebbels submitted his resignation and asked if he could leave for Japan. Hitler refused both requests.
8. After Adolf Hitler's death on the 30th of April, 1945, Joseph Goebbels became the Chancellor of Germany, but for how long did he stay at this position?

Answer: 1 day

Goebbels was Chancellor of Germany for just one day as he committed suicide on 1st May 1945, the day after Hitler. He was succeeded by Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk.
9. Goebbels held Hitler in very high regard and was closer to him than most members of the Nazi party. Which of the following did Goebbels do in respect of the Führer?

Answer: Gave all his children names which began with the letter H

Joseph Goebbels named his six children: Helga Susanne, Hildegard Traudel, Helmut Christian, Hedwig Johanna, Holdine Kathrin and Heidrun Elisabeth. They all have the first initial H in honour of Adolf Hitler.
10. Goebbels married Magda Quant in 1931 and together had six children. On May 1st, Magda committed suicide and Joseph either also committed suicide or was shot by an SS man. Before this, they killed their children by using which method?

Answer: Poison

The six children (all blonde and blue eyed) were put to sleep with morphine and poisoned with cyanide. Magda had a child from a previous relationship named Harald and he was the only member of the family to survive past 1945.
