Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first bubblegum in the U.S. was developed by this entrepeneur in 1906. Who was he?

Answer: Frank H. Fleer

Fleer, a confectioner, had founded the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in 1849. He made numerous attempts to develop a successful bubblegum, but abandoned the idea after his final experiment in 1906. The gum at that time was too sticky and broke very easily.

Not the right mix just yet. The gum, called "Blibber-Blubber", was never marketed to the public at this time. Another attempt was made in 1911, and this gum was sold to the public, but didn't have many buyers.
2. A company named The Shelby Gum Company, of Shelby Ohio, produced the first commercially successful bubblegum. What was it called?

Answer: Blow Gum

The gum was called "Blow Gum", and later the name was changed to "Blo Bubble". It hit the shelves in 1924. This was the first commercially successful bubblegum, and it was sold worldwide.
3. In 1928, The Fleer Company improved their bubblegum so and it was finally accepted by the public. This gum celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2008. Which gum is this?

Answer: Dubble Bubble

"Dubble Bubble" was the gum that hit the market in 1928, and it has been commercially successful ever since. It is commonly believed that it was invented by Walter Diemer, who worked for The Fleer Company as an accountant. There are skeptics though, who say that this story was made up, so that Diemer could appear on a televsion game show in the 1960s.
4. Why is bubblegum traditionally pink in color?

Answer: It was the original color used by Frank Fleer

It is beleived that the pink coloring used by Mr. Fleer for his original gum, was the only color he had in stock at the time, and so it was used to make the gum more attractive looking.
5. Blowing bubbles with bubblegum is a competitive sport.

Answer: True

In 1994, a woman named Susan Mongomery Williams, from Fresno California, set what was at the time, the record for the largest bubble blown, at 23 inches in diameter. This accomplishment was listed in the "Guinness Book Of World Records". There are many contests worldwide to see who can blow the biggest bubble, the most recent being a contest called "The Bubblegum World Championship" which is an Internet based contest for bubblegum enthusiasts around the world.
6. Perhaps the most famous bubblegum in the USA is Bazooka. What well known company, which is also well known for baseball trading cards, markets this gum?

Answer: The Topps Company

The Topps Company, of Brooklyn, New York, which was the premier distributor of baseball picture cards in the U.S., first marketed "Bazooka" bubblegum shortly after World War II. They packaged the individual pieces in red, white, and blue waxed paper, to symbolize patriotism, and originally sold them loose, in candy stores.
7. What change did The Topps Company make in their marketing of the gum in 1953?

Answer: They included comics in the package

"Bazooka Joe" comics were added to the gum package in 1953. These comics were usually two or three scenes with Joe and his cast of characters. The comics could also be saved and sent into the company with a small amount of cash for "valuable" prizes.
8. Bazooka bubblegum is marketed internationally, in many countries, with wrappers and comics printed in different languages.

Answer: True

Bazooka in Canada has the "Bazooka Joe" comics printed in English and French, depending on where the gum is distributed. The gum is distributed in Israel, and the comics are written in Hebrew. The gum has been sold in dozens of countries and the languages are adjusted accordingly.
9. Bazooka has evolved over the years and the company has expanded the number of flavors of the gum. Which of these flavors are NOT a flavor of Bazooka gum?

Answer: Peachy Keen

No such gum as Peachy Keen. All the others are real flavors of Bazooka gum that have been developed over time. They also make Watermelon Whirl, and of course the "original" flavor, which has no official name. The wrappers are colored accordingly, but they maintain their basic three stripe pattern.
10. Everyone knows what bubblegum tastes like, right? What flavor, or combination of flavors, is the most common or "original" flavor?

Answer: Wintergreen, Peppermint, Vanilla, and Cinnamon

Admittedly, this question will seem different to all, depending on your sense of taste. Officially, and traditionally, the flavors used by manufacturers in their most common bubblegum are a combination of wintergreen, peppermint, vanilla, and cinnamon, and this gum is usually colored with the familiar light pink shade.
