Captain Joseph Wadsworth had saved the Charter from British hands and hid it in the safest place he could find- a white oak tree.

Governor John G. Rowland announced the Connecticut Coin Design Competition in 1998. More than 112 people ages 6-87 submitted designs. 19 of the designs submitted showed the Charter Oak. 5 of those 19 were submitted for approval. Three of those were returned to Governor Rowland and he chose the design we see today. 23 people from 18 towns received Honorable Mentions for their designs.

The Charter Oak is very important to Connecticut's history. In this tree the Connecticut Charter was hidden keeping it out of the hands of the British. The famous tree fell during a great storm on August 21, 1856. This is also printed under the tree on the left side of the design.
