With the Charter on the table between opposing parties a heated argument took place. Mysteriously the candles were blown out and when relit the Connecticut Charter was gone. Captain Joseph Wadsworth had saved the Charter from British hands and hid it in the safest place he could find- a white oak tree.

Governor John G. Rowland announced the Connecticut Coin Design Competition in 1998. More than 112 people ages 6-87 submitted designs. 19 of the designs submitted showed the Charter Oak. 5 of those 19 were submitted for approval. Three of those were returned to Governor Rowland and he chose the design we see today. 23 people from 18 towns received Honorable Mentions for their designs.
