Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the United States, which company makes 'Mastermind' under a 1998 copyright?

Answer: Pressman

Did you know that you can put a copyright on any original piece of your work? However, if someone steals the work (reproduces it without your permission) no legal action can be taken unless the copyright was purchased legally.
2. How many players are recommended by the official rules to play Mastermind?

Answer: two

This is the best number of players because there are two roles to be played: codemaker and codebreaker. People can play in teams if they choose, but I personally find it somewhat difficult, especially if the minds of people on the same team do not think the same.
3. Which of the following is not a color of the code pegs in the original first edition Mastermind game?

Answer: black

The code pegs are for the codemaker's code and the codebreaker's attempts at breaking the code. These have six colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and white. There are also two colors of smaller pegs (red and white). These pegs are for the codemaker to use to inform the codebreaker how much info in his/her attempt to break the code is right. Phew! [Did that make any sense?!?]
4. What is the catch phrase for this game? [Comparable to Stratego: The Classic Battlefield Strategy Game]

Answer: The Challenging Game of Logic & Deduction

Actually, not all games have catch phrases. Most, not all, Parker Brothers games include "The Parker Brothers Game of..." Another common phrase to use in a catch phrase is "The Classic Game of..." using the blank to describe the game.
5. In standard play (the official rules), how many code pegs will the codebreaker put down each turn?

Answer: four

Some people vary play, once they have been playing the game for a few years. The most common way I have heard of to do this is to allow the mastermind to leave one or more peg-holes blank if he/she chooses.
6. According to the official rules, when the codebreaker has correctly guessed the code, the codemaker places four red key pegs in the board before revealing the code.

Answer: True

I have never done this, but the rules instruct players to do so. After placing the key pegs in the board, the codemaker reveals the secret code by pulling down/raising the cover over his/her code pegs.
7. The codebreaker cannot earn points if he/she does not correctly guess the code by his/her tenth turn.

Answer: False

After the codebreaker makes ten incorrect guesses, the codemaker reveals the code. If the codebreaker can show that the codemaker made a mistake, the game is replayed in the same roles and the codebreaker gets three points.
8. Assuming that the codemaker's code is [Red Yellow Blue White], and the codebreaker inserts the code pegs [Blue Yellow Orange Green], how many key pegs would the codemaker put down and what color(s) would they be?

Answer: two - one white and one red

The white key peg symbolizes that one of the codebreaker's peg colors is correct, but located in the wrong place. A red key peg symbolizes that one peg is the correct color and in the correct space.
9. What age does the company that produces Mastermind recommend players be? [ages ____ to adult]

Answer: 8

Companies often have age recommendations in order to prevent young children from attempting to play, and swallowing the pieces. Another reason is also to prevent people too young to understand from playing and getting angry. I first played when I was just eleven years old and accidentally made the same guess three times out of the ten! Oops!
10. Which of the following is not a game made by the same company as the United States 1998 version of Mastermind?

Answer: Battleship

Battleship is an actual game, and also for two players (according to the rules). In the game of Battleship the two opponents battle to sink each other's ships in a mock-war situation. (Information taken from the official Pressman Toy Corporation website on December 30, 2004.)
