Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As indicated in the quiz title, garlic was once labeled the "poor man's teriac" (teriac being the Greek word for 'cure-all'). This was because of the many medicinal values of garlic, and the fact that even poor people had access to it. Which of these is garlic NOT good for?

Answer: Burn treatment

Raw garlic rubbed on the skin can in some cases CAUSE severe burns! It will certainly not cure them!
2. What is the Latin name for cultivated garlic?

Answer: Allium sativum

Allium cepa are regular garden onions, allium oschaninii are shallots, and allium ampeloprasum is leek. All of these share the same genus (allium), and are closely related.
3. Directly after eating garlic, devout Muslims will want to avoid one specific course of action, by the words of the Prophet Muhammad. What is this?

Answer: Going to mosque

Garlic is not prohibited by the dietary laws, but the Prophet Mohammed once said "Whoever has eaten garlic should not approach our mosque".
4. It may be beneficial for roses to have garlic planted next to them.

Answer: True

The vicinity of garlic is a cure for Black Spot disease in roses. As the garlic grows, the fungus that causes the disease will retreat. It is also said that the roses will grow extra fragrant - because they'll want to overpower their smelly little neighbour!
5. Dreaming about garlic is interpreted as an omen of what?

Answer: You will uncover hidden wealth or buried secrets - but it will not be of any benefit!

A different interpretation says that dreaming about garlic means good luck and happiness. Apparently, there is no way to be sure when it comes to dreams.
6. In medieval Germany it was recommended that you add a bulb of garlic to your wine, if you were afraid that someone might have poisoned it. Why was this, precisely?

Answer: Poisoned wine would change colour when garlic was added

Garlic was thought to be so health-bringing that it was the antithesis to all sorts of poison or venom, regardless of its source and other qualities.
7. Imam Bayildi, "the imam fainted", is a dish made from eggplant stuffed with onions, tomatoes and garlic, simmered in olive oil. Where does this delicious dish originate from?

Answer: Turkey

The popular legend has it that the imam fainted with joy when his wife served him this for the first time. Other versions of the story says he fainted when he heard the cost of the ingredients!
8. One green herb has been popularly reported to negate "garlic breath", and so you will often find it in recipes that are heavy on garlic. Examples include garlic bread, Imam Bayildi and pistou sauce. Which herb is this?

Answer: Parsley

Fresh parsley does mask the smell of garlic on your breath, but only temporarily! The smelly breath comes from the indigestible sulfur compounds in garlic, which are passed by the blood into the lungs and skin, where it is expelled by breath and sweat. This takes so long that the parsley you ate with the garlic has been completely digested in the meantime!
9. In Scandinavia, it was common to place garlic in a baby's crib to keep away vampires.

Answer: False

Vampires are primarily part of Eastern European folklore, and does not feature in Scandinavian tales. However, the underground-dwelling huldrefolk always tried to steal human babies and replace it with one of their own; fresh garlic in the crib would keep them away.
10. An old saying goes that when _______ walked out of the Garden of Eden, onions grew in his right footprints and garlic in the left. What name is missing here?

Answer: Satan

Strange, isn't it, that something that came from the Devil could be so beneficial!
