Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which generation of immortals is Zeus?

Answer: Third

The first generation was Chaos, Gaea and Uranus. Their children, the Titans, were the second generation. Zeus was the son of Titans, which made him the third generation.
2. After Zeus was born, Rhea replaced him with what object?

Answer: A stone

Since Zeus' five older siblings were all eaten, Rhea (his mom) replaced him with a rock. She left him on an island to be raised by nymphs. The rock was gobbled up by Cronus. Zeus eventually overthrew his dad and became the god of the sky. Smart thinking, Rhea!
3. Some of the children of Zeus were called the Muses. How many Muses were there in total?

Answer: Nine

Diodoros states that there are nine Muses, which is the usually accepted number. Zeus and Mnemosyne had children who were called the Muses. They were basically the goddesses of everyday art. The nine Muses were: Calliope (muse of epic poetry), Clio (muse of history), Erato (muse of love poetry), Euterpe (muse of music), Melpomene (muse of tragedy), Polyhymnia (muse of sacred poetry), Terpsichore (muse of dance), Thalia (muse of comedy), and Urania (muse of astronomy).
4. Who did Zeus rape by turning himself into a bull and carrying her away?

Answer: Europa

Zeus turned into a bull and enticed to Europa to ride on him. He then carried Europa into unknown lands. Europa is the namesake of Europe. Why? The Greeks lived in Greece which was one of the southern countries of Europe. North of it was almost like hostile and foreign land. They name the unknown lands (Europe) after Europa because she was taken into unknown places.
5. According to Hesiod, which one of these is not a child of Zeus?

Answer: Hephaestus

According to Hesiod, Hera created Hephaestus by herself as a result of her jealousy over the birth of Athena. The other answers were all children of Zeus. Hebe and Ares are both children of Zeus and Hera. Polyhymnia is one of the nine Muses.
6. Who was the child of Zeus and Demeter?

Answer: Persephone

Demeter would not have relations with Zeus. One day, Demeter was in a field when Zeus went over to her. She turned into a snake to escape him but he also turned into a snake. Zeus then went on to rape her. Persephone was born soon after.
7. Who did Zeus turn into an eagle?

Answer: Periphas

Periphas was a king of the country of Attica. He was loved by his people, and worshiped Apollo. Zeus got jealous of the attention Periphas was getting, so he planned to kill him by striking him with a lightning bolt. Apollo begged Zeus to spare Periphas, so instead he turned Periphas into an eagle, making him the king of birds. His wife, Phene, was turned into a vulture.
8. Who was the monster Zeus fought and trapped under Mount Etna?

Answer: Typhon

Gaea bore Typhon and his mate Echidna. Typhon was sent into the world and wrecked it after Zeus sent Gaea's earlier children (the Titans) into Tartarus. He almost won before Zeus stood up to him. The other gods, seeing Zeus fight, also got courageous and together they defeated Typhon. He was trapped under Mount Etna and that's basically the story of volcanoes.
9. Who was punished by Zeus for trying to butcher his son's meat and serve it to the gods?

Answer: Tantalus

Tantalus was miffed because the gods wouldn't let him take ambrosia and nectar (the food of the gods) back to the mortal world. When the gods went to his house, he butchered his son Pelops and served him. The gods killed him and sent him to the Underworld to undergo eternal punishment.

In his punishment, he stood in a pond under a fruit tree. Every time he got hungry and tried to get a piece of fruit, the branches would recede upwards. Every time he got thirsty and tried to drink from the pond, the waters would dry up. Eternal punishment? Yep! Very punishing.
10. What was the war Zeus led against the Titans called?

Answer: Titanomachy

Some people call it the Titans' War, but the formal term is Titanomachy. Zeus, his siblings, and some Titans overthrew the other Titans. Zeus and his siblings took over and reproduced, therefore creating what is now the Olympians.
