Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Be serious" "I am _______" Which word completes this quote, and which two characters said this?

Answer: savage; Enjolras, Grantaire

In some translations, the quote is "I am wild" instead of "I am savage".

This quote is from Volume IV ('Saint Denis'), Book I ('A Few Pages of History'), Chapter VI ('Enjolras and his Lieutenants'). Enjolras is trying to find someone to go to the Barrière du Maine and get the men there to come and fight on the barricade, and Grantaire volunteers. Enjolras immediately refuses, asking if it is possible for Grantaire to be good for anything. Grantaire responds saying he has a vague ambition for it. Enjolras argues that Grantaire believes in nothing, and Grantaire says "I believe in you". After some convincing, Enjolras does let Grantaire go.
2. "And then, do you know, _______ _______, I believe I was a little in love with you." What name completes this quote, and who said it?

Answer: Monsieur Marius; Eponine

This quote is from Volume IV ('Saint Denis'), Book XIII ('Marius Enters the Shadow'), Chapter VI ('The Agony of Death After the Agony of Life'). This was the last thing Eponine said before she died in Marius' arms on the barricade where she had gone, disguised as a man, so that she could die with Marius and be the one to guide him to heaven.
3. 'Madame Magloire usually called him Your Greatness. One day he rose from his arm-chair, and went to his library for a book. It was upon one of the upper shelves, and as ______ was rather short, he could not reach it. "Madame Magloire," said he, "bring me a chair. My greatness does not extend to that shelf." ' Who is the 'he' spoken of in this passage?

Answer: The Bishop of D----

This quote is from Volume I ('Fantine'), Book I ('An Upright Man'), Chapter IV ('Works Answering Words'). The entire first book of Volume I is about the Bishop of D----, the man who gave Jean Valjean the famous silver candlesticks and kept him from being sent back to jail.

It gives us more background on him, and just how good a person he was--making what he did for Jean Valjean all the more profound.
4. "Light! Light! all comes from light, and all returns to it. Citizens, the nineteenth century is _______, but the twentieth century will be _________." Which two words complete this quote, and who said it?

Answer: grand, happy; Enjolras

This quote is from Book V ('Jean Valjean'), Volume I ('War Between Four Walls'), Chapter V ('What Horizon is Visible from the Top of the Barricade'). It is from one of Enjolras' speeches, this one not long before his death. As with many of his speeches, it was about how they were sacrificing their lives so that one day the world could be truly happy.

He ends by saying "Brothers, he who dies here dies in the radiance of the future, and we are entering a grave illuminated by the dawn."
5. "This _______ had adopted the people." What word completes this quote?

Answer: orphan

This quote is from Volume III ('Marius'), Book IV ('Friends of the ABC'), Chapter I ('A Group Which Almost Became Historic'). It is in Feuilly's introduction--an orphan who "had but one thought--to deliver the world." He taught himself everything he knew--which was quite a lot.
6. "Chaste upon the earth, but coupling in the ________. They are souls which have senses. They sleep together in the ________." Which words complete this quote, and who said it?

Answer: infinite, stars; Grantaire

This quote is from Volume IV ('Saint Denis'), Book XII ('Corinth'), Chapter II ('Preliminary Gaiety'). Grantaire is talking to Joly and Bossuet about "Marius' amours". Just after, Joly and Bossuet are summoned by one of Gavroche's friends to the procession of General Lamarque's funeral.

They elect to ignore the summons, but they later hear a commotion and discover almost all of the Friends of the ABC rushing to Rue de la Chanverie to begin building the barricade.
7. "It is on December nights, with the thermometer at zero, that we think most of the ______."

Answer: sun

This quote is from Volume IV ('Saint Denis'), Book VIII ('Enchantments and Desolations'), Chapter VII ('The Old Heart and Young Heart in Presence'). Monsieur Gillenormand (Marius' grandfather) is secretly wishing that he could see Marius one last time before he died--and, lo and behold, a few pages later, Marius pays him a visit.
8. "... what can be more grand?" "To be ______." What word completes this quote, and which two characters said it?

Answer: free; Marius, Combeferre

This is from Volume III ('Marius'), Book IV (The Friends of the ABC'), Chapter V ('Enlargement of the Horizon'), after Marius, a devoted Bonapartist, gets into an argument with a very firmly Republican and anti-Bonapartist group of students (the Friends of the ABC) and their leader (Enjolras).

After making a long speech about things that Napoleon said, he ends with the remark "What can be more grand?" and Combeferre responds with a simple "To be free."
9. "The Rose Discovers That She Is An Engine of War". This is not a quote, but the title of a chapter. Who is the "rose" in question?

Answer: Cosette Fauchelevent

This quote is from Book IV ('Saint Denis'), Volume III ('The House in the Rue Plumet'), Chapter V ('The Rose Discovers That She Is An Engine of War').
In this chapter, Cosette's physical appearance and her transition from fairly homely to truly beautiful are discussed, and Marius, for the first time in six months, sees her at the Luxembourg.
10. "Between the logic of the revolution and its philosophy, there is this difference--that its logic could conclude with _______, while its philosophy could only end in ______."

Answer: war, peace

This quote is from Volume III ('Marius'), Book IV ('Friends of the ABC'), Chapter I ('A Group Which Almost Became Historic'). It's one of the first lines of Combeferre's introduction--Enjolras' more logical and reserved counterpart, second in command, 'guide' of the revolution, and part of the triumvirate of the Friends of the ABC (Enjolras, Combeferre, and Courfeyrac--the chief, guide, and center).
