Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country was Robert Louis Stevenson born?

Answer: Scotland

Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in November 1850 and died on 3 December 1894. His most famous books are "Treasure Island", "Kidnapped" and "Strange Case of Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde." He wrote many short stories and poems and the wonderful "A Child's Garden of Verses." He moved to Samoa, where he died at the age of 44. His famous "Requium" is inscribed on his gravestone:

"Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you gave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill."
2. The first name of the young boy who is the hero of this story is Jim. Do you know what his last name is?

Answer: Hawkins

Jim lived in an old inn the "Admiral Benbow" which was in Black Hill Cove on the road to Bristol. The inn was run by his mother and father and after his father's death Jim helped his mother with the running of the inn.
3. An old seaman came to stay at the "Admiral Benbow" known just as "The Captain". However, what was his real name?

Answer: Billy Bones

The Captain (Billy Bones) arrived at the inn with an old sea chest. One of the stories he told our boy hero was that he had been first mate to the notorious Captain Flint. After a visit to him by an old blind man, (Blind Pew) who gave the Captain a black dot, the Captain died.
4. Jim found the map of Treasure Island in the Captain's sea chest. Where exactly in the chest was it?

Answer: Wrapped up in oilcloth

Afraid that Blind Pew would return, Jim and his mother went to the Captain's room to take only the money that was owing to them from the Captain's sea chest. As they were going through the sea chest they heard the tapping of the blind man's cane, so grabbed a bundle wrapped in an oilcloth and fled.
It was just in time, as three men arrived and searched the inn looking for the treasure map.
5. After Jim showed Dr Livesey and Squire Trelawney the map that indicated where the treasure of the infamous Captain Flint was buried, it was decided to seek a ship and go and look for the treasure. What was the name of the ship they all sailed in?

Answer: Hispaniola

Travelling to Bristol, Squire Trelawney buys a schooner named the "Hispaniola" and hired Captain Smollett to command the ship and engage a crew. "The Hispaniola" was a schooner of 200 tonnes.
6. What was the name of the seaman engaged as Cook on the ship bought to sail to Treasure Island?

Answer: Long John Silver

The character "Long John Silver" was a big influence on the modern conception of a "Pirate". He had a parrot, named Captain Flint (after his former captain); he had lost one leg and used a crutch to help him get around. According to Stevenson's letters, the idea for the character of Long John Silver was inspired by his real-life friend William Henley.

After the publication of "Treasure Island" Stevenson wrote to Henley "I will now make a confession. It was the sight of your maimed strength and masterfulness that begot Long John Silver."
7. Where was Jim when he heard the crew, led by Long John Silver, plotting to take over the ship, kill the ship's officers and keep the treasure for themselves?

Answer: In the apple barrel

Jim crawled into the ship's apple barrel to get some apples and whilst inside he overheard Long John Silver talking to his men. Silver admits to them that he was Captain Flint's quartermaster, as were several other members of the "Hispaniola" crew also members of Captain Flint's crew.

When the pirates went about their work, Jim warned Captain Smollett, Squire Trelawney and Doctor Livesey of the impending mutiny
8. What was the first name of the sailor who had previously been marooned on Treasure Island, who Jim encountered whilst running from the Pirates?

Answer: Ben

Upon landing on Treasure Island, the pirates discard Long John Silver's careful plan to postpone any open mutiny or violence until the treasure is safely aboard and demand that he seize the treasure immediately. Jim runs away from the pirates as soon as he is ashore. Running for his life he meets Ben Gunn, another ex-crewman of Captain Flint, who had been marooned three years ago on the island.
9. Where is the treasure of Captain Flint ultimately found?

Answer: Hidden in a cave

After fighting with the pirates and putting down the mutiny, Long John Silver surrenders to Dr Livesey. They then go to the marooned sailor's cave home. He had dug up the treasure some months previous and hidden it in his cave.
10. What happens to Long John Silver?

Answer: He escapes in a small boat

After finding the treasure hidden by Ben Gunn, it is divided amongst Squire Trelawney and his loyal men, including Jim and Ben Gunn and they return to England leaving the surviving pirates marooned on the island. However, Long John Silver escapes in a small boat with a small part of the treasure, aided by Benn Gunn.
