Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While concealed in the apple barrel, Jim Hawkins overheard Long John Silver recount highlights of his career as a pirate. Which pirate captain did Long John Silver serve under before joining Flint's crew?

Answer: Edward England

Though Silver seems to be friendly to the protagonists at first, we soon learn he had a long career as a pirate.
2. As leader of the mutineers, Silver is at least indirectly responsible for most of the deaths in "Treasure Island". Which of these two men did Long John Silver personally kill with his own hands?

Answer: Tom and George Merry

Despite his missing leg, Silver was deadly in a fight. Tom, a sailor, was killed when he refused to join the mutineers. George Merry was the last of mutineers to die during the final confrontation with the protagonists. He had been wounded by a musket ball and Silver (who had been forced by circumstances to switch sides) finished him off with a pistol shot pretty much because the two had hated each other.
3. When Jim first meets Ben Gunn, the castaway mentions a particular type of food he wanted. What sort of food did Ben Gunn crave?

Answer: Cheese

Ben Gunn, a former member of Flint's crew, was marooned on the island after he led an unsuccessful search for the hidden treasure. After three years marooned on Treasure Island and subsiding on goat meat, he very much wanted the simple pleasure of eating a piece of cheese.
4. Which of the crew initially joined the mutineers, but quickly returned to the good guys just before they fled the Hispaniola?

Answer: Alexander Gray

Captain Smollett knew one of the mutineers didn't really have his heart in it, and was able to talk him into switching sides.
5. One of the mutineers served as gunner under the pirate captain named Flint. Who was Flint's gunner?

Answer: Israel Hands

Silver had arranged for many former members of Flint's crew to be aboard the Hispaniola. This included Israel Hands, George Merry, Job Anderson and Tom Morgan.
6. When recapturing the Hispaniola, Jim Hawkins was forced to kill one of the pirates. Which of the pirates did he personally kill?

Answer: Israel Hands

Jim found a large reserve of courage within himself when the chips were down. When Israel Hands tried to knife him to death, Jim had no choice but to shoot the pirate.
7. Many of the mutineers had sailed with the notorious pirate Captain Flint. What was the name of Flint's ship?

Answer: Walrus

Though dead long before the novel begins, Flint casts a long shadow over the entire story. He himself is a fictional character, but several real-life pirates (Edward England and Blackbeard) are briefly mentioned by the characters in the book.
8. The arrival of Billy Bones at the Admiral Benbow Inn kicks off the action of the novel. How did Billy Bones die?

Answer: Had a stroke

Billy came to a sad and undignified end. He was without a friend in the world, with his own former shipmates out to kill him. His stroke was brought on by severe alcoholism and the stress of constant fear for his life. His death, though, led to Jim finding the map to Treasure Island in his sea chest, which became the impetus for the rest of the story.
9. The disappearance of someone from the Hispaniola foreshadows the approaching danger. Who vanished during the trip to Treasure Island?

Answer: Mr. Arrow

An incompetent officer and a drunkard, Mr. Arrow was not missed by anyone. His disappearance was assumed to be an accident, but later events make it likely he was disposed of by the mutineers.
10. When the mutineers need a scrap of paper to pass Silver the black spot, they tear a page from a Bible. Who among the mutineers had a Bible?

Answer: Dick Johnson

A black spot marked on a piece of paper is given to a pirate captain when the crew wants to depose him. With the plot to gain the treasure map seemingly gone to pot, the few surviving mutineers slipped Silver the black spot.

The mutineers used a page ripped out of the Bible to make the black spot--something Long John cleverly used to play upon their superstitions by suggesting they had thus brought bad luck upon themselves.
