Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the 1990s Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman starred together in three films - "Days Of Thunder" (1990), "Far And Away" (1992) and "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). Which of the below-mentioned actors played in two of those movies?

Answer: Thomas Gibson

Gibson portrayed Stephen Chase in "Far And Away", where his character rivals that of Cruise for Shannon Christie's (Kidman's) love. In "Eyes Wide Shut" Gibson appears as Carl Thomas, the boyfriend of Marion, who turns out to be in love with Dr. Harford (Tom Cruise). The doctor, however, does not share her feelings. Kidman portrays Harford's spouse, Alice.
2. What 1998 movie shows two different versions of how a woman's life would have developed depending on whether she catches the train she's waiting for or not?

Answer: Sliding Doors

The plot focuses on the two directions Helen's life would have taken. The version in which she gets on the train ends with her being hit by a car (and therefore murdered). The variant with the missed train finishes with the protagonist finding true love. The role of Helen was given to Gwyneth Paltrow.
3. Which crime drama of 1993 ends with the Robert Duvall's character shooting down Michael Douglas' character?

Answer: Falling Down

Douglas plays the role of a man whose mind has gone completely distorted after losing his job and family (he's divorced). After beating up several persons and killing one in a gun store, he becomes a threat for his ex-wife and their daughter. Eventually, he is shot by police officer Martin Prendergast (Duvall).
4. Which of these American movies that came out during the 1990s is a remake of a French film?

Answer: True Lies

Some of the roles in "True Lies" (1994) are performed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis and Tia Carrere. The original movie - the French production "La Totale!" - was released three years earlier. Curtis and Schwarzenegger play a married couple who live a normal life, until one day Helen (Curtis) finds out that her husband Harry doesn't actually sell computers, but is in fact a US government secret agent. Juno Skinner (Carrere) and her boss (a figure from the world of organized crime) are the main obstacles for the successful performance of Harry's mission.
5. Friday dies in the end of the 1997 film "Robinson Crusoe".

Answer: True

Yes, he does. He and Robinson are faced in a death battle against each other by Friday's ex-tribesmen. If Robinson wins, he will be free. If Friday kills him, he will be allowed to return to his tribe. However, a slaver ship arrives on the island and the newcomers shoot Friday and enslave a lot of the locals.

This is a major difference between the film and Daniel Defoe's novel (in the latter Friday even goes to Britain with Crusoe). Another difference is that the book portrays Crusoe as an English man (it is even mentioned in the original title which is in fact much longer), while in the movie he is presented as Scottish.
6. "Brokedown Palace" is a 1999 American drama telling the story of two girls who, after receiving their secondary school diplomas, go on a vacation in Thailand. The movie criticises the local laws and the way they are applied, therefore most of the scenes (except for only some views) were filmed in another country. Which? Hint: Actress Claire Danes, who stars as Alice Marano in this film, was later proclaimed 'persona non grata' in this country.

Answer: The Philippines

Danes called Manila a "ghastly and weird city". She remarked on the city sanitation and pointed out that the residents were very poor. This resulted in the president of the country (at the time the movie was made) making the above-mentioned statement about the actress. Danes's movies were also no longer projected in the state.
7. Another 1990s film that received the attention of the audience and critics' recognition was "Seven". Its conception is strongly related to the seven deadly sins. Which sin is the last to be "paid tribute to"?

Answer: wrath

After sloth, greed, lust, gluttony and pride have already played their role in the fabula, the serial killer in this movie (played by Kevin Spacey) kills detective Mills's (Brad Pitt's) wife. The murderer explains he did this because he envied him for his normal life and nice family. Wrath comes last, as the deranged investigator shoots the cutthroat to death.
8. Which of these 1990s motion pictures did not gain Sandra Bullock a MTV Movie Award nomination?

Answer: The Net

All of the incorrect answers deserved Bullock best female performance nominations, with the actress winning the award for her character in "Speed". "The Net" and "While You Were Sleeping" were both released in 1995 and this was probably one of the reasons they didn't nominate her for the former.
9. Name Rhona Mitra's character in the 1999 fantasy action "Beowulf".

Answer: Kyra

Kyra is presented as a daughter of the legendary Danish ruler Hrothgar. She is the love interest of Roland (one of Hrothgar's soldiers), but the word that best describes her feelings towards him is indifference. Kyra and Beowulf are the only ones who survive the attack of Grendel and his mother against the castle inhabitants.

They even manage to destroy the beasts. It would have been a mistake if they had chosen the name Kristanna for the daughter of an early 6th century Scandinavian king, since Kristanna is a Norwegian name meaning "follower of Christ" and it was not until the 12th century when the people (and states) of Scandinavia were converted to Christianity.
10. Which English king did actor Patrick McGoohan portray in "Braveheart"?

Answer: Edward I

In the movie you can often hear the Scots referring to him as "Longshanks". He was also known as "Hammer of the Scots". Edward I left this world in 1307, when the English and the Scottish were still waging war against one another. "Braveheart" depicts Edward I as a cruel and unjust ruler, but at the same time he is fair enough to admit his son's lack of courage and prowess.

The king considers William Wallace to be his worst enemy. His only wish is to see the revolutionist dead. So, it is no surprise that his last order is for Wallace to be executed.
