Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lon Chaney Jr. died in 1973 from heart and liver failure complicated by beriberi (a lack of vitamin B1 in his diet). Two years earlier he appeared in his final movie in a supporting role as Groton, a puppy-loving mentally-challenged lethal mute manservant to Dr. Frankenstein. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Dracula vs. Frankenstein

Chaney Jr. appeared along with J. Carrol Naish, Anthony Eisley, and Russ Tamblyn in this low budget and campy update of the classic Frankenstein story. This movie was a sad end to Chaney Jr.'s long career which was earlier highlighted by memorable roles as Lenny in 1939's "Of Mice and Men" and Larry Talbot in 1941's "The Wolfman". Chaney Jr. also acted in the other three films. "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" was released in 1943, "House of Frankenstein" was released in 1944, and "Hillbillys in a Haunted House" was released in 1967. Alternate later titles for "Dracula vs. Frankenstein" included "Blood of Frankenstein", "Satan's Bloody Freaks", "Teenage Dracula", "The Blood Seekers" and "The Revenge of Dracula".
2. Just before he ended his life with an acute overdose of sedatives and alcohol in 1964, Alan Ladd filmed his last role in a movie released shortly after his death the same year. He played Nevada Smith, a down-and-out actor and long-time friend and eventual enemy of a ruthless tycoon. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: The Carpetbaggers

Ladd co-starred with George Peppard, Robert Cummings, Martha Hyer and Elizabeth Ashley in this film based upon Harold Robbins' similarly titled trashy novel with Peppard playing a character loosely-based on real-life industrial icon, Howard Hughes. Peppard later married co-star Ashley in 1966.

She was wife number two out of the eventual five women he married prior to his own death in 1994. Ladd also starred in "Gatsby" released in 1949, "Shane" released in 1953, and "Badlanders" released in 1958.
3. Long-time character actor Vic Morrow died in a helicopter crash on the set of his final movie in 1983. He played Bill Conner, a prejudiced man who learns what it is to be the target of bigotry and racism. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Twight Zone: The Movie

Morrow starred in one portion of a number of unrelated stories paying tribute to the long-running classic television series. John Landis, the director of Morrow's segment of the movie, was charged in relation to Morrow's death and the related death of two child actors.

He was eventually acquitted in a jury trial of charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. The highlight of Morrow's career occurred in the 1960s in his starring role as Sgt. Saunders in the popular television war series "Combat!". Morrow also appeared in "War" released in 1957, "Hell" released in 1961, and "Evictors" released in 1979.
4. The day after his 66th birthday, Walter Huston was felled for good by an aortic aneurysm in 1950. His last appearance in a movie was released later that year. He played, T.C. Jeffords, a wealthy and arrogant cattle baron with an iron fist and a steely daughter. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: The Furies

Huston starred along with Barbara Stanwyck, Wendell Corey, Gilbert Roland and Judith Anderson in this western tale of greed, revenge and murder. While Huston was not nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Jeffords, he did receive his one and only Oscar award in 1949 for his work in 1948's "Treasure of the Sierra Madre".

He was directed by his son, John Huston, in "Madre". The younger Huston himself passed away in 1987 at the age of eighty-one from emphysema. Daddy Huston also starred in "Divided" released in 1931, "Daybreak" released in 1933 and "Sun" released in 1946.
5. In 1973 cancer took Edward G. Robinson's life. That same year he gave his final motion picture performance as Sol Roth, an aging police researcher trying to uncover the link between a brutal murder and a synthetic food product. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Soylent Green

Robinson played a supporting role to lead actor Charlton Heston in this sci-fi thriller dealing with manufactured foods and corporate cannabalism in a world short of natural nourishment. In his final scene in the movie, Robinson's character commits suicide while Heston's character looks on weeping. Apparently, Heston's tears were real as he was the only one on the set, other than Robinson, who knew Robinson had terminal cancer and would very soon be dead for certain. Robinson also performed in "Hatchet Man" released in 1932, "Head" released in 1959, and "Outrage" released in 1964.
6. Lee Marvin was struck down by a heart attack one year after he appeared in his final role in 1986. He played Colonel Nick Alexander, a leader of an elite band of commandos called in to take back a jetliner hijacked by Lebanese terrorists. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: The Delta Force

Marvin starred with Chuck Norris, Martin Balsam, George Kennedy, Robert Forster and many others in this action-packed film of patriotic special forces versus stereotypical evil terrorists. Ironically, Marvin is said to have turned down the role of General Patton in 1970's "Patton" as he did not want to glorify war, yet many of his movie roles cast him as an armed forces character. Marvin also starred in "Dozen" released in 1967, "Pacific" released in 1968, and "Devil" released in 1976.
7. George Burns passed away due to a cardiac arrest at age one-hundred in 1996. Two years earlier he made his final movie appearance in a cameo role. He played Milt Lackey, a hundred year old stand-up comedian cracking jokes at a radio station as bedlam occurred all around him. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Radioland Murders

Burns appeared along with Brian Benben, Mary Stuart Masterson, Ned Beatty and many others in this frenetic murder mystery set in 1939 during the launch of a national radio station amidst chaos. George Lucas of "Star Wars" fame wrote the story. Peter MacNicol had a small role in the film and later went on to have considerable success starring on television shows such as "Ally McBeal", "Numb3rs" and "24". Burns also acted in "Broadcast" released in 1932, "Dance" released in 1933, and "Style" released in 1979.
8. In 1989, the same year that breast cancer ended Bette Davis' time on earth, she appeared in her final role as Miranda Pierpoint, a witch who causes calamity when she marries into a family. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Wicked Stepmother

Davis walked off the set of the movie after one week because she hated the script and the way she looked in the rushes. She was also suffering from the ravages of cancer and had become quite frail. Her scenes were retained and the script was rewritten to focus on her daughter's character played by Barbara Carrera. Davis spent most of the movie supposedly confined to the body of a cat.

The movie was a sad end to a brilliant career. Davis also starred in "The Bad Sister" released in 1931, "Hell's House" released in 1932 and "Satan Met a Lady" released in 1936.
9. Eight years before Elvis Presley succumbed to the ravages of superstardom, he performed in his final acting role in a non-concert movie. He played Dr. John Carpenter, a young doctor working in a slum trying to connect with his patients, who falls in love with a nun. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Change of Habit

The nun/love interest was played by a post "Dick Van Dyke Show" Mary Tyler Moore. She began her long run as television character Mary Richards on her own classic show the following year in 1970. Interestingly, Edward Asner, who went on to play the character of Lou Grant on Moore's 1970 show, played a supporting role in this movie as a policeman. Presley also performed in "Country" released in 1961, "Dream" released in 1962, and "Joe" released in 1968.
10. The year before she died from an epidural hematoma following a skiing accident in 2009, Natasha Richardson had a supporting role in her final movie, playing Mrs. Kingsley, a headmistress at a boarding school exasperated by a spoiled, rich and troubled American student. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Wild Child

Emma Roberts, the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and niece of actress Julia Roberts, played the lead role of a Malibu princess exiled by her father to an overseas education. Sadly, Richardson's untimely death not only widowed her husband, actor Liam Neeson, but also deprived her two teenage boys of their mother. Richardson also appeared in "Country" released in 1987, "Nell" released in 1994, and "Asylum" released in 2005.
