Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Go ahead, make my day."

Answer: Sudden Impact (1983)

"Sudden Impact" (1983) is the fourth movie in the "Dirty Harry" franchise with Clint Eastwood in the role of Harry Callahan. In this film, Inspector Callahan is tasked with tracking down a serial killer who is killing a group of gang rapists.

The quote "Go ahead, make my day." comes early in the film as Harry is facing down an armed robber with a hostage.
2. "Dying ain't much of a living, boy."

Answer: The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

Clint directed and starred in the title role of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976) telling the story of a man who suffered a great loss at the hands of Union sympathizers during the Civil War. In turn, he joins a group of Confederate sympathizers and hunts down all things Union-related. At the end of the war, convinced to lay down arms, the rest of his group is massacred in a vile act of betrayal. Josey Wales continues to fight on until he finally gets his revenge.

The quote "Dying ain't much of a living, boy." occurs when Wales is sitting in a dark corner of a saloon when a man enters, looking for him. When asked if he is a bounty hunter, the man responds, "A man's gotta do something for a living these days.", to which Wales gives the clever, quoted response.
3. "With all due respect, sir, you're beginning to bore the hell out of me."

Answer: Heartbreak Ridge (1986)

Clint produced, directed and starred in "Heartbreak Ridge" (1986) as Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Highway, a soldier nearing retirement who is saddled with a new crew of Marines that he has to whip into shape before leading them in the assault on Grenada (in 1983).

The quote "With all due respect, sir, you're beginning to bore the hell out of me." occurs after Highway and his men have assaulted a hill against orders. Major Powers berates him, saying, "Well, you disobeyed an order. I told you to stay in contact and not take this hill without me. Get on your feet, Highway!"

Then, the Sergeant gave his retort.
4. "I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned."

Answer: Unforgiven (1992)

Another film produced, directed, and starring Clint Eastwood, "Unforgiven" (1992) had him playing the part of William "Will" Munny, and aging, retired (reformed?) outlaw and killer. Munny is approached by a young cowboy (the "Schofield Kid") trying to recruit him to join in hunting down some men who had disfigured a prostitute (for which the other ladies of the brothel had set a $1,000 reward).

The quote "I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned." came near the end of the film when Munny confronts Little Bill (Gene Hackman) for torturing and killing the third member of their crew, Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman).

Incidentally, Eastwood took home the Oscar for Best Director for the film, in addition to it winning Best Picture.
5. "You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."

Answer: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" (1966) was Clint's third movie in this 'Spaghetti Western' series as 'The Man with No Name'. However, in this movie, he fills the role of 'the Good' while competing with 'the Bad' (Lee Van Cleef) and 'the Ugly (Eli Wallach) to find a buried cache of Confederate gold.

The quote "You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig." came near the end of the film as 'the Good' has the upper hand over 'the Ugly', forcing him to dig up the found gold. It is also a reference to an earlier quote from 'the Ugly' to 'the Good' when Wallach states, "There are two kinds of spurs, my friend. Those that come in by the door; those that come in by the window."
6. "'Bout time this town had a new sheriff."

Answer: High Plains Drifter (1973)

Clint directed and starred in "High Plains Drifter" (1973) as the unnamed 'Stranger' who arrives in the town of Lago and immediately takes down the gunmen hired to keep the town under protection (after they brashly challenge him). The town sheriff (with the backing of the town council) offer the same job to the Stranger, which he initially refuses, until he learns the town's secret...

The quote "'Bout time this town had a new sheriff." comes immediately after 'the Stranger' accepts his new job and they all go to the saloon to have a round. Eastwood's character immediately starts using his newfound 'blank check' power in ways unforeseen by the townsfolk as he takes the sheriff's badge (and the mayor's hat) and bestows them upon the 'runt' Mordecai, with no push back from either the sheriff or the mayor.
7. "OK, you did two things wrong. First, you asked a question, and second, you asked another question."

Answer: Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Clint Eastwood co-produced, directed, and *wrote the musical score* for "Million Dollar Baby" (2004) while also acting in the role of Frankie Dunn, an aging boxing coach and gym owner who reluctantly takes on the training of a local young woman Maggie Fitzgerald (played by Hilary Swank, who won the Best Actress Oscar for the role).

The quote "OK, you did two things wrong. First, you asked a question, and second, you asked another question." happens shortly after Munn agrees to take her on, specifically telling her the first condition that "she does everything that he says, no questions asked."
8. "You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it."

Answer: A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

Clint starred in this first of the three 'Spaghetti Westerns' featuring the 'Man With No Name', "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964). While the film was largely panned by reviewers upon its release, the deadpan acting of Eastwood as the mysterious gunslinger caught the imaginations of fans everywhere.

The quote "You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it." comes early in the movie shortly after arriving in the town of San Miguel, after initially being ridiculed by a number of local toughs. Eastwood's character approaches the men, using the pretext of his mule's hurt feelings to take them all on (and take them all out) with a blazing display of shooting.
9. "Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have messed with? That's me."

Answer: Gran Torino (2008)

Clint produced, directed and starred in "Gran Torino" (2008) as Walt Kowalski, an old (racist) Korean War vet living a solitary life in a neighbourhood that has changed around him to become predominantly non-white. In spite of his seclusionary efforts, Walt gets drawn into a relationship with a young Asian boy (his neighbour) after the boy tries to steal his Gran Torino.

The quote "Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have messed with? That's me." comes relatively early in the film as Eastwood's character stops to confront a group of three young black thugs harassing a young Asian woman (and a white boy who tried to be chummy with the gang members). When they ask who he thinks he is (in stronger terms than that), Clint responds with the classic line, after which he proceeds to pull a gun on them and rescue the girl.
10. "You've gotta ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"

Answer: Dirty Harry (1971)

Clint takes on the role of Inspector Harry Callahan for the first time in "Dirty Harry" (1971) as he works to track down a psychopathic killer who, after a random killing, leaves a blackmail letter stating that he will kill more people if not paid $100,000.

The quote "You've gotta ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?" comes early in the movie (establishing the character) as Callahan foils a bank robbery while on his lunch break. The full text delivered to the hapless bank robber:

"Uh uh. I know what you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"
