Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Right at the beginning of the film, the camera cuts in on the little boy playing a video game. What type of game is it?

Answer: Sports: Baseball

It was the first shot in the film, accompanied by the boy's coughing (as he was ill). Fred Savage, who plays the little boy, was more recently seen all grown up in "Austin Powers: Goldmember".
2. Fill in the blank word: The Cliffs of ________

Answer: Insanity

I loved the overblown names given to everything in the film. In addition to the Cliffs of Insanity and Shrieking Eels, there were also the Pit of Despair, Fire Swamp, Lightning Sand and, of course, The Rodents of Unusual Size.
3. What has a 'long and glorious tradition'?

Answer: Starting wars

"I've hired you to help me start a war! It's a prestigious line of work, with a long and glorious tradition!" - Vizzini
4. At the top of the cliff, Vizzini used an axe to cut the rope the Man in Black was climbing. He did not succeed in cutting the rope all the way through though.

Answer: False

He cut it through and it certainly dropped over the cliff side, but by some miracle, the Man in Black was clinging to the side of the rocks a la "Spider-Man". Neither did he use an axe.
5. What was the Spaniard's father's first name?

Answer: Domingo

Mandy Patinkin is the actor who played the Spaniard, Inigo Montoya. His full name is Mandel Bruce Patinkin. He was born in 1952, in Chicago, Illinois. He is better known (in Britain anyway) as Dr. Jeffrey Geiger in "Chicago Hope".
6. How many years has the Spaniard being hunting for his father's killer?

Answer: Twenty

20 years is mentioned many times, my favourite being when Fezzik told him that Count Rugen had been found. Inigo fell into his soup!
7. Vizzini told Fezzik to finish off the Man in Black 'his way'. When Vizzini described what the way consisted of, Fezzik didn't like it. Why did Fezzik not like 'his way'?

Answer: He thought it wasn't sportsmanlike

He deliberately missed with the rock so that the pair could fight in a 'civilized' way. Fezzik was played by André the Giant. Sadly he died of a heart attack aged just 46.
8. What does iocane powder taste of?

Answer: Nothing

There is no such thing as iocane powder...
9. When Westley was working with the Dread Pirate Roberts on his ship, what job did he do?

Answer: Valet

Westley tells Buttercup as they are walking through the Fire Swamp that the pirate fancied having a valet, having never had one before.
10. What is the instrument of torture called? The ________

Answer: Machine

Inspired choice of label I thought! That would have taken some focus groups years to decide on...
11. How was it possible to get into the Pit of Despair?

Answer: Secret knot on the tree trunk

The forest scenes (where, of course, the Pit of Despair was located) were filmed at Burnham Beeches, one of the best examples of ancient woodland in Britain.
12. When Humperdinck was angry and ran into the Pit of Despair to torture Westley, he set the instrument of torture to 50, although it had never been set so high before.

Answer: True

Count Rugen said earlier in the film that he would start the Machine on 1 and maybe at some point in the future try 5, but that 5 could wait as he wasn't sure what it would do. He was horrified when he saw what Humperdinck was going to do.
13. What garden implement did the Albino have?

Answer: A Wheelbarrow

The wheelbarrow was used to cart bodies around. The Albino was played by Mel Smith of "Alas Smith and Jones" fame. (A comic duo popular in Britain in the 1980-90s). Griff Rhys Jones was the other half of the partnership.
14. Miracle Max gave Inigo and Fezzik a miracle pill to feed Westley. Were they told not to let Westley swim for an hour after taking the pill? Yes or No.

Answer: Yes

The line about swimming was said as the trio were leaving Miracle Max's house. Apparently Billy Crystal (who played Miracle Max) and Rob Reiner (who directed the film) are good friends.
15. What type of cloak did Westley say he needed, and which Fezzik just happened to have with him when they were on the wall overlooking the castle gate?

Answer: Holocaust

Fezzik got the cloak from Miracle Max, apparently it fit so well, he had been given it as a gift so he was able to help Westley! Cary Elwes, who played Westley, was born in London, England. He reprised the dashing hero role (sort of) in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". Oh dear.
16. Who played the Impressive Clergyman?

Answer: Peter Cook

Peter Cook was half of "Pete and Dud" (Dud being, of course, Dudley Moore). He was originally from the seaside town of Torquay, England.
17. In the castle fight, what was the first weapon that we see Count Rugen use to wound Inigo?

Answer: Small Dagger

I remember the feeling of absolute mortification the first time I saw the film and thought Inigo wasn't going to get his revenge!
18. How was Buttercup going to kill herself?

Answer: Dagger

She kept the dagger in a box in her desk. Robin Wright, who played Buttercup, was born in Dallas, Texas on 8 April 1966, but actually grew up in San Diego, California.
19. Did Westley agree to fight 'to the death' with Prince Humperdinck?

Answer: No

He said they would fight 'to the pain', whereby Westley would mutilate the Prince and leave him to 'wallow in freakish misery'. Nice and friendly then.
20. What career change does Westley suggest to Inigo?

Answer: Piracy

He said it as they were about to jump down onto the white horses and ride away at the end.
