Question 1 of 10
1. In this movie the young woman, a very sweet young thing living in a small town, finds herself in trouble. It wasn't her fault, she had planned to marry the Daddy but, oops, he was killed. She gives the baby up, wallows in shame for a while, turns into a rather bitter older woman but finally hooks back up with her long lost son. Obviously the actress who acted all that out won an Oscar as Best Actress. For which film? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Another "chewing-up-the-scenery" role came in this movie. It was not so much a soap opera but a love story. An odd love story, but one nonetheless. This poor young farm girl is both deaf and dumb and gets raped, resulting in the birth of a child. A nice young doctor who likes her rushes in and saves the day, even after all those tongues wagging that he was the baby's father. He wasn't. And, yes, the lead actress won an Oscar for this one, too. What movie is this? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Natalie Wood. Nice New York girl. Steve McQueen. Irresponsible musician. They played folks in a movie where their ships, shall we say, went 'bump in the night'. And baby makes three! (Pretty cool gene pool for the little thing, though, don't you think?) Which one of these is the right movie? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In Puritan New England a young wife finds herself pregnant. She actually is married but, such misfortune. Her absent husband is not the father. Public scorn ensues and she's labeled for life. Literally. Which film?

Answer: (Three Words)
Question 5 of 10
5. He could run fast, he could play ping pong well, he liked Doctor Pepper sodas, he ended up owning a shrimping boat and he adored his Jenny. But he didn't know that she had given birth to his son. He probably didn't even know he could make that happen! They finally did marry and then she died. Sad story. Good movie. Name it!

Answer: (Two Words)
Question 6 of 10
6. This one might be a little obscure but I thought it was a pretty darned good movie. A sailor on leave meets up with a prostitute. He falls in love with her. She already has a bi-racial illegitimate son and there's a new baby coming. That sailor certainly fell into a package deal! Which 1974 film is this? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Another (imagine that) Oscar winning performance by a lady highlighted this movie in 1979. One of her kids was not illegitimate, another of them was and another was a step-child. She liked swimming even though minnows were clipping at her feet, she commented boldly about her friend's "skinny build" and she truly loved her children. All of them. "So It Goes Like It Goes" is the movie's theme song. Which of these am I speaking of? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Frank shows up at Cora's roadside diner. She's married to Nick but takes a fancy for Frank, anyway. Chaos (and a passionately cleared off kitchen table happen in no time flat). Nick ends up dead, Cora ends up thriving and Frank ends up stuck in the middle. But there's a baby on the way. Unfortunately, Cora tumbles out of a runaway car and both she and the baby buy the farm. Which movie is this one? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Oh, for Heaven's sake (even though Heaven had little to do with it...). In this film not one but three women end up having babies by the same unmarried guy. They all become friends; one big happy family. Guess you have to give the devil his due! Which film is this? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Shelley Winters played something of a mewling part in this one. She ends up a little late on her menstrual cycle and Daddy Montgomery Clift has the hots for Elizabeth Taylor. Poor Shelley ends up fish food. Which movie am I addressing now? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: To Each His Own

Olivia DeHavilland played the embarrassed Mama in that one, grabbing her Oscar for it in 1946. She later won another for "The Heiress" in 1949. In "Children Of A Lesser God" the lead actress won an Oscar, too, but her big problem was being deaf, not pregnant. Joan Crawford won, too, for "Mildred Pierce" but her kids were legitimate even though one of them was an absolute terror in the movie. "Cactus Flower" was a comedy.

Answer: Johnny Belinda

Jane Wyman, once Mrs. Ronald Reagan, did this movie in 1948. Lew Ayres played the sympathetic doctor. It was a really good movie, especially since she had to do all of her acting using only expressions on her face.

Answer: Love With The Proper Stranger

Did they end up getting married? It was never revealed. But he settled down and she decided to keep the baby. And, of course, an Oscar nomination for Wood as Best Actress in 1964.
4. In Puritan New England a young wife finds herself pregnant. She actually is married but, such misfortune. Her absent husband is not the father. Public scorn ensues and she's labeled for life. Literally. Which film?

Answer: The Scarlet Letter

This classic Nathaniel Hawthorne novel has been turned into film versions three times notably. Lillian Gish in 1926, Colleen Moore in 1934 and Demi Moore in 1995 all played poor Hester Prynne and got to wear that annoying red "A" (which stands for "adulteress"). Reverend Dimmesdale, the Randy Reverend and tortured father of the kid, has been portrayed in many different ways in each.
5. He could run fast, he could play ping pong well, he liked Doctor Pepper sodas, he ended up owning a shrimping boat and he adored his Jenny. But he didn't know that she had given birth to his son. He probably didn't even know he could make that happen! They finally did marry and then she died. Sad story. Good movie. Name it!

Answer: Forrest Gump

In this one, the unwed Dad wins an Oscar! Tom Hanks, played Forrest and Robin Wright played the somewhat skittish Jenny. Haley Joel Osment, who went on to seeing dead people, played Forrest Jr.

Answer: Cinderella Liberty

Marsha Mason was, need I say it, Oscar nominated for her role. James Caan played her flustered but loyal boyfriend. I remember a scene in it so well. He asks her what it feels like to have a baby. "It feels like crapping a chair", she answers. I laughed until I cried hearing that.

Answer: Norma Rae

This one ranks as one of my all-time favorite movies. Mostly because it gave Sally Field the opportunity to bust out of that "Gidget" and "Flying Nun" thing she was stuck in. She totally tore up the screen in this one. Beau Bridges played her overwhelmed husband and Ron Liebman played her union organizer ("she was the fish he wanted to catch...").

Answer: The Postman Always Rings Twice

This one made it to the screen twice so far. Once in 1946 with Lana Turner and John Garfield but, at least I think, the 1981 version took on the "grit" of the novel and the brutality of the whole situation. Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange made for a wildly crafty pair!
9. Oh, for Heaven's sake (even though Heaven had little to do with it...). In this film not one but three women end up having babies by the same unmarried guy. They all become friends; one big happy family. Guess you have to give the devil his due! Which film is this?

Answer: The Witches Of Eastwick

Jack Nicholson played the Devil in this one (what a stretch) who dabbles with Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. All get pregnant but they take care of him in short order before the children pop out. This one was released in 1987.
10. Shelley Winters played something of a mewling part in this one. She ends up a little late on her menstrual cycle and Daddy Montgomery Clift has the hots for Elizabeth Taylor. Poor Shelley ends up fish food. Which movie am I addressing now?

Answer: A Place In The Sun

Theodore Dreiser's book translated well to the screen in 1951 (its title is "An American Tragedy", the book, that is).It, too, was filmed earlier. In 1931. In reviewing this, this quiz looks pretty easy. At any rate, I hope you enjoyed it!
