Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Look back before you leave my life; Be sure before you close that door"

Answer: Think Twice

'Think Twice' was performed by the Canadian singer Celine Dion and written by Andy Hill and Peter Sinfield. It was her first single to reach number one in the UK (holding that position between February and March 1995) and it also made it to the top of the charts in Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Ireland.

The song also appeared on Dion's album 'Colour of My Love' and was much more successful in Europe than it was in North America. Although Celine Dion originated from French-speaking Quebec, most of her UK number one singles were written and sung in English.

However, she first came to prominence in the UK when she won the 1988 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland with the song 'Ne partez pas sans moi' (which translates to 'Do not go without me').
2. "When the morning cries and you don't know why; It's hard to bear"

Answer: Tragedy

Although it was famously covered by Steps in the 1990s, 'Tragedy' was a number one hit, in March 1979, for the Bee Gees - a family band made up of three brothers, Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb. The band were noted songwriters, penning multiple number one hits (such as 'Tragedy') for both themselves and other singers such as Diana Ross ('Chain Reaction'), Tina Turner ('I Will Be There') and Dionne Warwick ('All the Love in the World'). 'Tragedy' appeared on their album 'Spirits Have Flown' and also reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as in various countries around the world.
3. "Love is blind, as far as the eye can see; Deep and meaningless, words to me"

Answer: Too Much

'Too Much' was the sixth single released in the UK by the Spice Girls, their sixth consecutive number one hit and their second consecutive Christmas number one (although there is nothing Christmassy about the song's lyrics, except perhaps the title's similarity to the quantity of turkey consumed on the day in question).

It was first released in the UK on 15th December 1997 and hung on to the top spot for two weeks. The song was written by the Spice Girls (Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Victoria Beckham) along with their regular songwriters Andy Watkins and Paul Wilson.
4. "That was quite a show; Very entertaining; But it's over now"

Answer: Take a Bow

'Take a Bow' was one of three new songs to be added to the track listing of Rihanna's album 'Good Girl Gone Bad' when it was re-issued as 'Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded' in 2008. It then spent two weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in May and June of that year.

It also reached the same heights on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100. Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, was born in Barbados and discovered by the US record producer Evan Rogers in 2003. Her first single, 'Pon de Replay' was released in 2005 and she achieved her first UK number one single, 'Umbrella', which also came from the 'Good Girl Gone Bad' album, in 2007.
5. "I've finally found that something; Worth reaching for"

Answer: That's My Goal

The song 'That's My Goal' was written by Jörgen Elofsson, Jem Godfrey and Bill Padley and performed by Shayne Ward, the 2005 winner of the British TV talent show 'The X Factor'. It was Ward's debut single, held the top spot on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks, was the 2005 UK Christmas number one and one of the fastest selling singles in British pop history.

The song also appeared on Ward's eponymous debut album. Like other winners of 'The X Factor', Shayne Ward was unknown prior to his appearance on the show.

He was one of the young singers (aged 16 to 24) who were mentored by Louis Walsh and won the show's finale with performances of Daniel Bedingfield's 'If You're Not the One'; the Christmas song 'When a Child is Born'; and the ballad 'Over the Rainbow' from the film 'The Wizard of Oz'.
6. "Sometimes I feel I've got to run away; I've got to get away"

Answer: Tainted Love

'Tainted Love' by British band Soft Cell spent two weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in September 1981 and was the best-selling single in the UK that year. Soft Cell's version was a cover; the song was originally written for the American singer Gloria Jones in 1964 by Ed Cobb of the Four Preps. Jones's original was released in 1965 as a B-side to 'My Bad Boy's Comin' Home' and failed to make it into the charts. Soft Cell was a duo consisting of vocalist Marc Almond and electronic musician David Ball.

The band were mainly active in the late 1970s and early 1980s before they split because of issues related to their declining popularity and escalating drug use.
7. "I know you're no good but you're stuck in my brain"

Answer: Troublemaker

'Troublemaker' spent two weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in late 2012 - but was ousted from the position a couple of weeks before it could have claimed the coveted Christmas number one spot. It was performed by British singer Olly Murs and featured the American rapper Flo Rida. Both performers were credited as co-writers of the song, along with Steve Robson and Claude Kelly. 'Troublemaker' was Olly Murs' fourth UK number one and Flo Rida's fifth (three of which were as a lead artist and two as a featured one). Olly Murs first came to prominence on the TV show 'The X Factor' in 2009; he won the show one year after Alexandra Burke, who also had a number one hit with a song featuring Flo Rida (hers was called 'Bad Boys').
8. "Why do I find it hard to write the next line?; Oh I want the truth to be said"

Answer: True

Spandau Ballet's 'True' made it to number one on the UK Singles Chart in April 1983 and stayed there for a total of four weeks. It also proved to be the British band's biggest hit in the US, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The song came from Spandau Ballet's album of the same name (which also made it to number one on the UK Albums Chart) and was written by Gary Kemp - the band's lead guitarist.

The rest of the band consisted of lead vocalist Tony Hadley, drummer John Keeble, saxophonist Steve Norman and Gary's brother, Martin Kemp, on bass guitar. Martin Kemp is also a well-known actor who appeared on British soap opera 'EastEnders'.
9. "Hello, hello, baby; You called, I can't hear a thing"

Answer: Telephone

'Telephone', by Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, appeared on Lady Gaga's 2009 album 'The Fame Monster'. It spent two weeks in the number one spot on the UK Singles Chart in March and April 2010, before being replaced by another 'T' song - 'This Ain't a Love Song' by Scouting for Girls.

The music video for the song is a sequel to the video for 'Paparazzi' - another song from 'The Fame Monster'. In it, Lady Gaga receives a telephone call from Beyoncé whilst in prison. While Beyoncé Knowles (formerly of Destiny's Child) is famous enough to be known simply by her first name, 'Lady Gaga' is, somewhat unsurprisingly, a pseudonym.

Her real name is Stefani Germanotta.
10. "If you change your mind, I'm the first in line; Honey I'm still free"

Answer: Take a Chance on Me

'Take a Chance on Me' was ABBA's seventh and final UK number one hit of the 1970s. It topped the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in February and March 1978. However, it wasn't ABBA's final number one overall as they had two more in the early 1980s before the band split in December 1982.

The band's name came from the first letters of the names of the four members - songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson; and lead singers Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog. ABBA were Swedish and came to prominence in 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden with their hit song 'Waterloo'. 'Take a Chance on Me' is one of the songs featured in 'Mamma Mia', the stage musical based around songs by ABBA; in the film version of the musical it is predominantly (and comedically) performed by Julie Walters.
