Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which Cyndi Lauper song are the lyrics "You with the sad eyes, don't be discouraged, oh I realize, it's hard to take courage"?

Answer: True Colours

The second album by Cyndi Lauper is called "True Colors" and the debut single has the same name. Released in 1986, the single reached number one in Canada, Chile and the United States. It's the only original song on the album that Lauper did not have a hand in writing.

She won a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song. After the death of a friend from HIV/AIDS, Lauper launched the True Colors Fund, which helps to eradicate homelessness among LGBT youth.
2. "We have no past, we won't reach back" are lyrics found on which of Cyndi Lauper's songs?

Answer: All Through The Night

Six singles were released from the smash debut album by Cyndi Lauper, called "She's So Unusual." "All Through the Night" was one of those singles. It was originally written and recorded by Jules Shear and covered by Cyndi Lauper for her 1983 debut studio album.

The song hit the top five singles charts. Unlike the other five singles released from this album, there was no accompanying video for the song.
3. "They say I better get a chaperone, because I can't stop messin' with the danger zone" are lyrics from which controversial Lauper song?

Answer: She Bop

"She Bop" is another single from her debut album, "She's So Unusual." This song was released in July 1984 and hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Due to sexual lyrics, the song was included on the 'Filthy Fifteen' list by the Parents Music Resource Center.

This group was founded in 1985 to try to increase parental control over the music children were exposed to (particularly violent, sexual lyrics or lyrics with references to drugs). This song made that list and got a Parental Advisory sticker slapped on it.
4. "Sometimes you'll picture me, I'm walking too far ahead, you're calling to me, I can't hear what you have said" can be found in which of her songs?

Answer: Time After Time

"Time After Time" was the second single from "She's So Unusual." Recorded in 1983 and released in 1984 it was a big hit for Lauper. A sad and memorable love song, it reached number one in several countries, including Zimbabwe. Lauper received a number of nominations for the song, including American Video Awards, a Billboard Award, a BMI Award and a Grammy Award.

It won several. It's also listed on many "Best of" lists, notably in 2021 by "Rolling Stone" as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
5. "Some boys take a beautiful girl, and hide her away from the rest of the world, I wanna be the one to walk in the sun..." are lyrics from this first big hit of hers. What's the song name?

Answer: Girls Just Want To Have Fun

This song introduced the world at large to Cyndi Lauper but did you know that she was not the first to record it? It was originally written, recorded and performed in 1979 by a musician by the name of Robert Hazard. The Lauper version was the debut single off her 1983 album "She's So Unusual" and was her breakout hit.

It reached number one pretty much everywhere (Ireland, Norway, United States, Canada, Israel, Japan and the list goes on...) and Lauper won an American Video Award and MTV Video Music Award for the song.

The song was accompanied by a fun and weird music video that highlighted Lauper as a quirky and creative soul. The video cost less than $35,000 to make and featured a large cast of volunteers, Captain Lou Albano of wrestling fame, and Lauper's real mom.
6. This Cyndi Lauper song has the following lyrics: "At the edge of my seat Please turn it around" What is the song?

Answer: Change of Heart

Here's a song not from Lauper's debut album! "Change of Heart" was the second single released from her second album ("True Colors"). The song was released in 1986 and reached top ten in Chile, United States, Israel and France. Background vocals for the song were recorded by the female band The Bangles.

The accompanying video shows Lauper playing at various locations around London, England.
7. This song was used in a movie soundtrack and has the following lyrics: "What's good enough for you Is good enough for me It's good enough It's good enough for me Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah" Can you name it?

Answer: The Goonies 'R' Good Enough

"The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" was released in 1985 as a single from the soundtrack for the movie "The Goonies." It was her fifth top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. I guess it was one of those songs that artists get sick of performing live for one reason or another as Lauper refused to include it in her live shows between 1987 and 2004. Fans kept asking for it though so eventually she included it again.

Originally Lauper called the song "Good Enough" but that was changed by the film studio so that there was a closer connection to the movie title. The movie "The Goonies" was directed by Steven Spielberg who made Lauper musical director, giving her free reign to include artists she wanted on the soundtrack. She included her friends The Bangles as well as Philip Bailey and Teena Marie.
8. Originally written by Prince, this song contains the lyrics: "I know, that you're goin with another guy I don't care, 'cause I love you baby that's no lie I love you more than I did when you were mine" Can you name it?

Answer: When You Were Mine

The song "When You Were Mine" was written and recorded originally by Prince for his 1980 album "Dirty Mind." The Lauper version was covered in 1983 and released as a promotional single only in the United States. In Canada and Japan it was commercially released. Lauper performed the song at the 1985 American Music Awards. Both versions of the songs are synthesizer based, with the Prince version being a bit more up tempo.
9. "Felt someone calling me into the howling of the wind. I heard the reflection of a sound echoing through my skin ..." These lyrics open which Cyndi Lauper song?

Answer: Sisters of Avalon

"Sisters of Avalon" is a song from the 1997 Cyndi Lauper album of the same name. The song was released as a single only in Japan. The song is about the power of sisterhood and women, and Lauper deliberately chose to work with a number of women writers and producers not only on the song but on the album as a whole.
10. "She said I'm sorry baby, I'm leaving you tonight I found someone new, he's waitin' in the car outside" Which Lauper song are these lyrics from?

Answer: Money Changes Everything

With "Money Changes Everything", Lauper takes yet another cover song and releases it, this time as a moderately successful single. Originally written and recorded by the band The Brains, Lauper released her version in 1984. The Lauper version reached top ten in Chile and Colombia and number twenty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was the first single from "She's So Unusual" to not make it to the Billboard top ten (it's a shame it wasn't more successful in the US because it's a great song!). Lauper didn't change the song too much from the original version and made a very decent cover.
