Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. OK, let's get up and running. Which song contains the line, "You don't want to hurt me but see how deep the bullet lies"?

Answer: Running Up That Hill

From Kate Bush's 1985 album "Hounds of Love", "Running Up That Hill" is about the singer wanting to swap places with her lover so that he can experience what she does and understand her better (and vice versa). "Running With the Devil" is by Van Halen; "Running On Empty" is by Jackson Browne and "Running Down a Dream" is by Tom Petty.
2. Which band sang: "So many people have come and gone, their faces fade as the years go by"?

Answer: Boston

Formed (surprise, surprise) in Boston by Tom Scholz and Brad Delp, "More Than a Feeling" was their first release from their 1976 self-titled debut album and has become a rock classic. This album has the distinction of being the best-selling debut album of all time. By 2003, over 16 million copies had been sold worldwide. For the record, Chicago are from Chicago; Kansas are from Kansas, but America were actually formed in Europe by a group of boys who were all sons of American Army officers stationed there.
3. What is the name of the song which contains the line, "I like the enchiladas and the teriaki too, I even like the chicken if the sauce is not too blue"?

Answer: TV Dinners

From ZZ Top's 1983 release "Eliminator", "TV Dinners" is this Texas trio's sardonic look at junk food. "Tom's Diner" is by Suzanne Vega; "The Sad Café" is by The Eagles and "Alice's Restaurant" is by Arlo Guthrie.
4. "If looks could kill they probably will" is a line from which song?

Answer: Games Without Frontiers

Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 and embarked on what was to become a hugely successful solo career. His first single "Solsbury Hill" was a minor hit in the UK, but it was his 1980 track "Games Without Frontiers" from his 3rd self-titled album that brought him his first true solo success. Essentially a social commentary on war, conflict and the United Nations, it parodies a popular game show from the 70's called "It's A Knockout" which saw teams from different European countries competing in various rather odd games while dressed in bizarre outfits ("Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games").

This was the first ever 7" single that I bought and it took me weeks to figure out the chorus being sung was "Jeux Sans Frontières" - the French name for the game show. Kate Bush, who was many years later to duet with Gabriel on "Don't Give Up", is the one singing the chorus on this track.
5. The following artists have all made songs about learning to fly, but which one's contains the line "Unheeded warnings I thought I'd thought of everything"?

Answer: Pink Floyd

The Foo Fighter's song is "Learn To Fly" while the other three each made "Learning To Fly". Pink Floyd's first album after the departure of Roger Waters was "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". Having already sung on several earlier Floyd tracks, Dave Gilmour easily slipped into the role of lead singer as well as guitarist and the band seemed none the worse for wear with the departure of Waters. "Learning To Fly" was a hit for Pink Floyd in 1987, and the album, dubbed by Waters as 'a pretty fair forgery', saw two further releases: "Dogs of War" and "On the Turning Away".
6. In what song will you find the line: "If I'm not blind why can't I see that a circle can't fit where a square should be"?

Answer: Hole Hearted

Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone first met in 1982 while Cherone was with his band The Dream. Three years later, they meet up again, and Gary asked Nuno to join his band. They become 'Ex-Dream', i.e. Extreme. It is to be a further three years though before they get a record contract and start work on their debut album, released in 1989.

It received critical acclaim, but little success. The following year, "Extreme II: Pornograffiti" is released. The first two singles also gain little response, but then "More Than Words" was released.

It raced to the top of the US charts and puts the band on the map. "Hole Hearted" was the fifth single from this album and was voted 'Outstanding Rock Single of the Year' at the Boston Music Awards, with "More Than Words" taking 'Outstanding Pop Single of the Year'. Bettencourt left the band in 1996 to pursue a solo career, while Cherone replaced Sammy Hagar as lead singer of Van Halen.
7. Which song contains the line, "The rising mist, the dampened earth, are just reminders of what life's worth"?

Answer: Overture

Formed in Sheffield in 1977, Def Leppard's first album "On Through the Night" was largely unnotable except for the final track, the superb "Overture". It wasn't until their third album "Pyromania" that they had their first true taste of success, and in my opinion this still remains their best album, with tracks such as "Rock of Ages" and "Photograph", although "Overture" is still my personal favourite. Later releases such as "Hysteria", "Retroactive" and "Slang" may have brought them far greater chart success and achieved them popularity in the US, but these were a bit too commercial for my taste.
8. "The words began to stick and tears to flow - her meaning now was clear to see". Who sang these lines?

Answer: Bread

"Diary" tells the story of a young man who finds his lover's diary and starts to read it. He reads her entries about her feelings for him and becomes overjoyed that she feels the same way about him as he does about her. He starts making plans for their future, but as he continues reading, he comes to realize that she is not writing about him at all, but somebody else. One of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Right up their with Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun".
9. Which song laments "The past is gone, it went by like dust to dawn"?

Answer: Dream On

When Steven Tallarico (he didn't change his name to Tyler until 1972), then with Chain Reaction, joined Joe Perry's band "Bam" in 1969, Aerosmith was born. They have since entered their fourth decade together with no signs of stopping. "Dream On" was their first single from their 1973 self-titled debut album, and was named #1 song of the year on two Boston radio stations. On re-release in 1976, it reached #3 on the US Billboard charts.
10. "... and there is no map, and a compass wouldn't help at all ..." is a line in which of the following?

Answer: Human Behaviour

Björk Gudmundsdottir has been a celebrity in her native Iceland since the age of 11. She sang with a succession of punk bands throughout her teens before forming The Sugarcubes in 1987 which put Icelandic music on the map. After they broke up in 1992, Björk went solo, releasing her aptly-titled album "Debut" the following year, from which this track is taken.
11. Who asked the question, "You know the difference it makes, what did you hear me say"?

Answer: The Cardigans

Formed in Jönköping, Sweden in 1992, The Cardigans had moderate success in Europe until "Lovefool", from their third album, was used by Baz Luhrmann on his film version of "Romeo and Juliet". It became a huge hit worldwide. The following year saw the release of "Gran Turismo", which yielded three hit singles: "My Favourite Game", "Hanging Around" and my personal favourite, from which this line is taken, "Erase/Rewind".
12. In which song will you hear the line "All that phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust"?

Answer: London Calling

The Clash's classic song of nuclear war, "London Calling" from the album of the same name. This, their third album, was rated the best rock album of the 80's by Rolling Stone Magazine. Although classified as a Punk band, The Clash explored a variety of music styles. After the break up of The Clash, guitarist Mick Jones went on to form Big Audio Dynamite.
13. In which of the following is the line: "Give me a reason to love you; give me a reason to be a woman"?

Answer: Glory Box

Portishead were formed in 1992 and named after producer Geoff Barrow's home town near Bristol in the West of England. Fronted by the soulful, melancholy vocals of Beth Gibbons, they are reminiscent of near neighbours Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry. Their debut release in 1995, "Dummy", proved to be far from that as it spawned three UK singles: "Numb", "Sour Times" and the haunting "Glory Box". "Glory Days" was a hit for Bruce Springsteen from his "Born in the USA" album. "Glory of Love" was by Peter Cetera and used for the soundtrack of "Karate Kid II", while "Gloria" has been the title of several tracks, most notably by Van Morrison, Laura Branigan and U2.
14. "And I'll wait right here 'till the sky is clear, and I'll keep looking into that endless sphere", can be found in which song?

Answer: Song For Sagittarians

Shawn Phillips turned 60 in 2003, yet continued to tour and perform worldwide. I had the privilege of seeing him in concert in South Africa in 2000. He is an enormously talented artist, and if you have not seen him live, do yourself a favour and make a plan to. "Song For Sagittarians" is from his hugely successful "Second Contribution" album.

As to the other options, "Gemini Dream" is by the Moody Blues, "Black Capricorn Day" is by Jamiroquai and "Age of Aquarius" is by Fifth Dimension from the musical "Hair".

The last of these three is quite appropriate though, as Shawn Phillips was renowned for the length of his hair, and he is, in fact, an Aquarian.
15. And lastly, Fleetwood Mac have recorded several songs dedicated to women. Which of the following of their songs closes with the line: "Dreams unwind, love's a state of mind"?

Answer: Rhiannon

In early Welsh mythology, Rhiannon was the daughter of Hefeydd, the wife of Pwyll of Dyfed and the mother of Pryderi. Falsely accused of murdering her infant son, she was banished from Pwyll's court. He was later found by Teirnon of Gwent, returned to them and renamed Pryderi by his parents which means 'worry' or 'trouble'. The song "Rhiannon" was the first Stevie Nicks contributions to be released as a single by Fleetwood Mac after she and partner Lindsey Buckingham joined the band in 1975.
