Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grand Funk Railroad played the first day at a major festival in the US in 1969. After the reaction they received, they were asked back to play the next two days. At which festival were Grand Funk Railroad "discovered" and signed by Capital Records?

Answer: Atlanta Pop Festival

This was their first major show. They had no record contract. The festival was July 4th weekend 1969, one month before that other gathering in New York. Their first album was released August 1969.
2. Which musician/producer produced Grand Funk's seventh album "We're An American Band"?

Answer: Todd Rundgren

Although the change in their sound started with "Phoenix", this is where the band really found "production" and a lot of that garage sound was lost. Todd Rundgren also produced the next album, "Shinin' On".
3. Which Grand Funk album cover was designed to resemble a coin, for their U.S. release?

Answer: E Pluribus Funk

On the rear was an "engraving" of Shea Stadium to commemorate their record breaking show there. This is the last album of the original three member period prior to Craig Frost joining on keyboards.
4. Which Grand Funk album was originally distributed in the U.S. with a transparent gold vinyl LP?

Answer: We're An American Band

This is the second album with Craig Frost on keyboards. This is the first album produced by Todd Rundgren. He also produced "Shinin' On".
5. Which Grand Funk album originally had 3D glasses that were part of the album cover, on its U.S. release?

Answer: Shinin' On

The glasses had to be torn out of the cover and they allowed you to get the 3D effect. This is their second and last album that featured Todd Rundgren as producer.
6. What do Little Eva and Grand Funk have in common?

Answer: The Loco-Motion

Little Eva's version went to number one in the U.S. in 1962. Grand Funk's version went to number one in the U.S. in 1974. Little Eva had very little success after this song due to being labeled a "dance craze singer". The song has appeared in the American top five by five different artists over the years.
7. Like many bands, Grand Funk has had multiple line ups. Which of the following was the original line up of Grand Funk Railroad?

Answer: Mark Farner, Mel Schacher, Don Brewer

Mark Farner and Don Brewer were previously with Terry Knight and The Pack. Mel Schacher was previously with ? and The Mysterians.
8. Which album did Grand Funk record at a benefit concert, accompanied by a full symphony orchestra?

Answer: Bosnia

Recorded in Detroit, Michigan, 1997 at a Bosnian relief concert. They had a little help from Peter Frampton, Alto Reed on sax, and Paul Shaffer conducting the orchestra.
9. It seems a measure for accomplishment for rock bands in the late 1960s and 1970s was when someone broke a Beatles record or knocked them off the number one spot on the charts. At what location did Grand Funk break The Beatles attendance record in 1971 by selling out in 72 hours?

Answer: Shea Stadium, New York

I think at this show you could actually hear the music. From all accounts, all that could be heard at The Beatles show were screaming girls. This show is also commemorated on the back of Grand Funk's U. S. release of "E Pluribus Funk".
10. What was the name of Grand Funk Railroad's first studio album?

Answer: On Time

"Grand Funk (The red album)" was their second album. "Closer To Home" was their third album. "E Pluribus Funk" was the fifth LP and the last with the original three member lineup.
