Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A fine young girl, she wait for me. Me catch the ship across the sea. Me sail the ship all alone. I never think I'll make it home." Not even the FBI could decipher these lyrics. But who sang them?

Answer: "Louie Louie" - The Kingsmen

"Louie Louie" was the Kingsmen's only hit, but it was a big one. At one point the FBI started an investigation into its lyrics, because they thought the indecipherable singer was shouting some lewd things indeed. But they couldn't work it out at all. Turns out it was a pretty harmless song about a sailor who misses his girl.

It was written by Richard Berry and originally a Jamaican sounding song, which explains the patois used. The Kingsmens version has become one of the archetypical rock & roll standards and has been covered countless times, among others by Black Flag, Iggy Pop, the Beach Boys, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, the Sonics, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, the Kinks, Toots & the Maytals, thee Headcoats, Otis Redding, D.R.I., the Fall, the Standells, Ike & Tina Turner, Motörhead, the Feelies, Jan & Dean, the Pretenders, the Troggs, Sisters of Mercy, Johnny Thunders, Frank Zappa, the Wailers, Robert Plant, and so on and so forth.
2. "Some folks like water. Some folks like wine. But I like the taste. Of straight ------ (hey, hey). You may think it's funny. That I like this stuff. But once you've tried it. You can't get enough (Wow!)" What is it these crazy 60s punkers liked? A lot?

Answer: "Strychnine" - the Sonics

When The Sonics debut single, the raunchy "The Witch", became a hit single in the Northwest region, local radio's wouldn't air the record before 3PM. They only played it after 'the kids got out of schools' and deemed it 'too far out' to be number one in the charts, even though - sales-wise - it was.
3. "Yeah, down by the river. Down by the banks of the river Charles - aw, that's what's happenin' baby. That's where you'll find me. Along with lovers, muggers and thieves - aw, but they're cool people." What are they on about? And who are they?

Answer: "Dirty Water" - the Standells

The Standells came up with their name while 'standing around' one day, trying to come up with a name. At first the band was pretty clean-cut, but when they got involved with producer Ed Cobb, all of that changed. Cobb made them record a song he wrote, "Dirty Water", and he made it sound pretty grungey.

At first the band didn't really like the sound of it, but when it turned out to be a hit, they quickly changed their minds and became one of the grooviest so-called garage bands ever.
4. "Last night your shadow fell upon my lonely room. I touched your golden hair and tasted your perfume. Your eyes were filled with love the way they used to be. Your gentle hand reached out to comfort me. Then came the dawn. And you were gone. You were gone, gone, gone." What is this band's singer trying to tell us?

Answer: "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" - The Electric Prunes

The Electric Prunes did play on their records themselves, but most of their early material was written by Annette Tucker and Nancy Mantz. By the time of their third album, "Mass in F Minor", classical composer David Axelrod had taken over and he brought in session musicians.

This, nor the finished record, really pleased the Prunes and they left one by one, while Axelrod made another album as The Electric Prunes. But in 2001 they sort of reformed and tried to reclaim their heritage.
5. "When I was a boy I thought about the times I'd be a man. I'd sit inside a bottle and pretend that I was in a jam. In my lonely room I'd sit my mind in an ice cream cone. You can throw me if you wanna 'cause I'm a bone and I go: Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip, yeah!" What song is this? Oop-ip-ip, indeed.

Answer: "7 and 7 Is" - Love

Love, formed by Arthur Lee, was central to the early hippie scene in Los Angeles. They were one of the first integrated bands, for which they got a lot of flack. "7 and 7 Is" was their only top 40 hit, which may have had something to do with the fact that they refused to tour.

By the time of their third album, "Forever Changes" (1968), the band was in disarray. Even though it was a masterpiece, Arthur Lee broke the band up soon after. He fronted several other Love-line-ups, and continues to do so to this very day. One of Love's early guitarists, Bobby Beausoleil, later became a member of Charles Manson's 'Family'.
6. "There's somethin' happenin' here. What it is ain't exactly clear. There's a man with a gun over there. A-tellin' me I've got to beware." Now I know that you recognise this one, but what song is it?

Answer: "For What It's Worth" - Buffalo Springfield

When Canadian Neil Young moved to the United States to try his luck in the music business, he was spotted driving his hearse in New York by Stephen Stills, who had met him when he toured Canada. During their brief time together, from '66 to '68, they recorded three pretty influential albums. "For What It's Worth" is their best known song, with its "Stop, hey, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down" chorus. Later Stills and Young occasionally worked together again, in the band Crosby, Still, Nash & Young; though Young more often than not let the other three carry on while he went of to do his solo thing. Good man.
7. "They call me ----. I'm known as the Night Tripper. Got a satchel of ---- in my hand. Got many clients that come from miles around. Runnin' down my prescriptions. I got medicines, cure all y'all's ills, I got remedies of every description." The blanks are the name of the musician and of something that is pretty important to him. Who is it and what song?

Answer: "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya-Ya" - Dr. John

Young Mac Rebennack was a gifted guitar player, but in 1961 he intervened in an argument in an hotel in Florida. A gun was pulled, a shot was fired and Mac was the use of one finger short. So he turned his attentions to the piano and became a succesful session player. By 1967 he had written some songs that were a psychedelic update of traditional New Orleans music and told the story of a character that was steeped in New Orleans voodoo traditions: Dr. John, the Night Tripper.

His first album, "Gris-Gris" (1968) - slang for voodoo, has to be heard to be believed.

It's a mix of scary funk, voodoo incantations and raspy storytelling. I'd recommend it to anyone with ears.
8. "Here she comes, you better watch your step. She's going to break your heart in two, it's true. It's not hard to realize. Just look into her false colored eyes. She builds you up to just put you down, what a clown." Yup, by 1967 the lovey-dovey hippie age was coming to an end. OK, I know, it was also spreading from Haight-Ashbury into the mainstream and there were even some hippies on TV. But the real hippies were gone and this band paved the way for the harsher sounding 70s. What song by which band is this?

Answer: "Femme Fatale" - The Velvet Underground

It's almost impossible to pinpoint how influential Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Moe Tucker were. But very. Together with Nico's iconic vocals and Andy Warhol's input, they should've conquered the world. Instead, almost everybody hated them.

Although, legend has it that everyone who bought their records felt compelled to start their own band. Don't you just love a happy ending?
9. "Well I feel pretty good. And I guess that I could get crazy now baby. Cause we all got in tune. And when the dressing room got hazy now baby. I know how you want it child. Hot, quick and tight. The girls can't stand it. When you're doin' it right. Let me up on the stand ..." And then what? What song is this?

Answer: "Kick Out The Jams" - the MC5

The MC5 - the Motor City Five, Detroit's pride and joy - were a total anti-establishment band. They provoked riots wherever they played. Through their manager, John Sinclair, they got involved with the anarchistic White Panther Movement. But most of their notoriety was built around one little word.

They had to change the intro to their best known song into "Kick Out the Jams, brothers and sisters" cos the record company didn't like the particular word they used to greet their audiences with. This provoked the band to buy ad-space in music magazines to insult their record company. Later pressings of the album restored the offensive word.
10. "So messed up I want you here. In my room I want you here. Now we're gonna be face-to-face and I'll lay right down in my favorite place." And then what do you want to do? What song is this?

Answer: "I Wanna Be Your Dog" - the Stooges

This is Iggy Pop's version of a love song. He says there's nothing rude or dirty about this song and everyone who thinks it is, has got a dirty mind. It's about how he wants to sleep in the lap of the one he loves. Like a cute little puppy. Yeah right.
