Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which instrument was invented by the Shulman Brothers of Gentle Giant?

Answer: The Shulberry

Odd little stringed thing, you can hear brother Derek play it on some of their albums. The banjar was invented by Roy Wood, and the mellophone is a marching instrument similar to a bugle or trumpet- Phil Shulman plays one on the album "Octopus".
2. When bassist Kevin Ayers left the Soft Machine to become a guitarist/singer/songwriter on his own, he was replaced by the phenomenal Hugh Hopper. What was his connection to the band before he joined as a full-time bass player?

Answer: Roadie

It pays to be a roadie. Hawkwind and Motorhead member Lemmy also started as a roadie to the stars, including Jimi Hendrix and Keith Emerson. Hopper also wrote some of the songs on their first album before he became a full time member.
3. King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp taught singer Boz Burell to play bass well enough that eventually he went on to stardom with which band?

Answer: Bad Company

It also featured Free/Firm/Current Queen singer Paul Rodgers, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs and Free drummer Simon Kirke.
4. Captain Beefheart is progressive rock's resident punk. His first album, the fabulous "Safe as Milk", featured which now legendary guitarist?

Answer: Ry Cooder

Ry was 20 years old at the time.
5. Which instrument is not played by Roy Wood on ELO's first album?

Answer: French Horn

He let future Wizzard member Bill Hunt play the French Horn. Roy also handled acoustic guitar, bass guitar, string bass, clarinet, recorders, slide guitar and percussion. He laid off his two favourite instruments (along with many others he could play masterfully), the bagpipes and the electric guitar, for this album.
6. Daevid Allen, founder of Gong, was an early member of which band?

Answer: The Soft Machine

He didn't last long in that band, but some of their work together can be found on the compilation "Jet-Propelled Phtographs".
7. Which of the following actors played drums for the Holy Modal Rounders?

Answer: Sam Shepard

Chevy Chase played drums for a band (which he later described as awful) that evolved into Steely Dan.
8. What was Procol Harum's short term alias after Matthew Fisher and Dave Knights left the band?

Answer: Liquorice John Death

The Paramounts was the name of the R&B group that eventually became Procol Harum. "Juicy John Pink" is one of Robin Trower's songs on "A Salty Dog", and Daddy Stovepipe is probably the earliest born recorded blues singer.
9. Which musician was originally supposed to be the fourth member of Emerson, Lake and Palmer?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Actually any of those would have been incredible. Amazing singer Brown led one of Carl Palmer's earliest bands.
10. The line up on which band's last album was essentially the same as the line up on Electric Light Orchestra's first album?

Answer: The Move

The line up was Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and drummer Bev Bevan. Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders featured at various times both Lynne and Wood. They evolved into The Idle Race, featuring a talented young Lynne. Sight and Sound featured Rick Price, who would later join Wood's The Move.
