Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jethro Tull won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal album in 1989 for this album.

Answer: Crest of a Knave

This is a pretty good album! Check out the tracks "Farm on the Freeway" and "Budapest". The cd also contains the excellent bonus track "Part of the Machine". It's puzzling why it won the Grammy for best heavy metal album since I wouldn't consider any track on the album to be heavy metal.
2. This is the first album recorded after keyboardist Rick Wakeman left Yes. He was replaced by Patrick Moraz. Side one of the album consisted of only one track which was over twenty minutes long.

Answer: Relayer

Like "Close to the Edge", this album by Yes has only three tracks: "The Gates of Delirium", "Sound Chaser", and "To Be Over." "The Gates of Delirium" was side one. The album itself takes a more fusion direction than the other Yes albums of the seventies. The song "Sound Chaser" is in my opinion one of Yes' best. This album has moments of brilliance and is highly recommended!
3. On the box set "Archive 1967-75" by Genesis, you will find a demo of "Dusk" from 1969. Which studio album does this song originally appear on?

Answer: Trespass

Many of the demos that are found on the fourth cd of "Archive 1967-75" are songs that later appeared on "From Genesis to Revelation." I really enjoy the original demos!
4. Various live performances from 1969 of the track "A Man, a City" involving the original lineup of King Crimson can be found on "Epitaph." This track is the early form of a track later released with a different title on King Crimson's second album "In the Wake of Poseidon." What is its title on that album?

Answer: Pictures of a City

On page four of the book included with the box set "Epitaph" David Singleton writes: "A Man a City is an early, form of Pictures of a City."

The box set "Epitaph" contains two cds (volume one and volume two) of live recordings from 1969 of the original King Crimson lineup. Volumes three and four containing more live recordings are also available. The sound quality is not the greatest, but in my opinion these cds are essential for lovers of "In the Court of the Crimson King". These cds contain many songs that are not found on the first two albums. Their version of "Mars" is awesome!
5. Which of the following albums peaked at number one on the U.S. album chart?

Answer: "A Passion Play" by Jethro Tull

According to Wikipedia, "Fragile" peaked at number four on the U.S. chart, "Animals" peaked at number three, and Trilogy peaked at number five. "A Passion Play" is an album that I only listen to occasionally ("Thick as a Brick" I find better). It consists of only one song that is over forty minutes in length! It does have its moments.

It's hard to believe now that there was once an era in which an album like this could be number one. For that reason alone, check it out!
6. Which member of Pink Floyd produced the album "Rock Bottom" for Robert Wyatt?

Answer: Nick Mason

Robert Wyatt was the drummer for Soft Machine and plays on their first four albums. He sings on their first three albums. Check out the track "Sea Song".
7. Which of the following tracks by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer was rerecorded in 1993 by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer for inclusion on "The Return of the Manticore" boxset?

Answer: Pictures at an Exhibition

The original version of "Pictures at an Exhibition" is live. This later version is a studio recording. It is much shorter (only fifteen and a half minutes), but I like it.
8. Peter Banks is a guitarist who appears on the first two studio albums by this band.

Answer: Yes

After Peter Banks left Yes he formed the band Flash.
9. This is the only Jethro Tull album in which Eddie Jobson appears on keyboards.

Answer: A

This album contains the excellent track "Black Sunday".
10. This song by McDonald and Giles has the same melody as "Cadence and Cascade" by King Crimson.

Answer: Flight of the Ibis

From the sleeve notes by Sid Smith of the 2002 remastered cd version of "McDonald and Giles" on Virgin Records: "Originally this was the melody for King Crimson's 'Cadence and Cascade.' Following his split from KC, Ian took the tune and recast it with new words from friend B.P. Fallon."

I highly recommend the album "McDonald and Giles" to fans of early King Crimson. I hope you enjoyed my first progressive rock quiz. Thanks for playing!
