Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you heard, "This city desert makes you feel so cold, it's got so many people but it's got no soul", where might you be?

Answer: Baker Street

Gerry Rafferty's huge hit from his 1978 album "City to City". Rafferty was also a member of Stealers Wheel, best known for "Stuck in the Middle With You". Before that he was a with a band called The Humblebums with Scottish comedian Billy Connolly .
2. Who sang "Once I rose above the noise and confusion just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion"?

Answer: Kansas

Formed in Topeka KS in the early 70's, "Carry On Wayward Son" was from their 1976 album "Leftoverture". An absolute rock classic.
3. In what song will you hear the line, "Some sweet talkin' mama with a face like a gent said my get up and go must have got up and went"?

Answer: Sweet Emotion

"Sweet Emotion" from Aerosmith's 1975 album "Toys in the Attic". There are many different versions of all the other titles, but the most memorable for me are "Sweet Dreams" by Jethro Tull, "Sweet Surrender" by Wet Wet Wet and "Sweet Thing" by David Bowie.
4. Who sang "Kick off your high heeled sneakers it's party time"

Answer: Steely Dan

Walter Fagan and Donald Becker first met at college in 1967. In 1972 they released their first album, calling themselves Steely Dan after a steam-powered dildo from William Burroughs' novel "Naked Lunch"! "FM" is my favourite Steely Dan track, but oddly enough, although it was released as a single in 1978, it only ever appeared on compilation albums.
5. "Now there's revolution, but they don't know what they're fighting". Which of the following contains this line?

Answer: Living in the Past

"Living in the Past" from Jethro Tull's second album "Stand Up" which went to #1 in the UK. One unusual aspect of this track is that it is written in 5/4 timing. "Living on a Prayer" was a hit for Bon Jovi; "Living After Midnight" by Judas Priest off their excellent "British Steel" album and "Living for the City" was by Stevie Wonder.
6. Which song contains the line: "Why don't you ask him what's going on? Why don't you ask him who's the latest on his throne?"

Answer: Tusk

In 1977, Fleetwood Mac released "Rumours" which became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Taken aback by the huge success of the album, F.M. returned to the studio two years later with the intention of producing something totally different from "Rumours".

The result was "Tusk". Far more "folksy" than their previous offering, the title track, complete with marching band, nevertheless proved to be a huge hit and the album reached #4.
7. Which band sang the line, "And she ran to him then they started to fly, they looked backward and said goodbye"?

Answer: Blue Oyster Cult

With backing vocals by Patti Smith, BOC's anthem to suicide "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" became a huge hit for them in 1976 from their album "Agents of Fortune", and has become the band's signature tune.
8. Who sang "And those of us with ravaged faces lacking in the social graces, desperately remained at home"?

Answer: At Seventeen

From her 1975 album "Between the Lines", Janis Ian's song of teenage angst and heartache earned her two Grammies. Although she has been recording since the mid-60's, she is probably best known for her huge 1980 hit "Fly Too High".
9. Which band said "I keep your picture upon the wall - it hides a nasty stain that's lying there"?

Answer: 10CC

With typical Eric Stewart & Graham Gouldman irony, "I'm Not in Love" is about being in love, but trying to "play it cool". Stewart & Gouldman were responsible for some other well known hits from the 60s such as "Groovy Kind of Love" by the Mindbenders.
10. Where will you find the line, "Every thought is a dream rushing by in a stream bringing life to our kingdom of doing"?

Answer: Fantasy

Not my usual taste in music perhaps, but Earth, Wind & Fire's 1977 hit "Fantasy" is one of those songs that gripped me from the first time I heard it. Maurice White was the driving force behind the band, and lead singer Philip Bailey later had a hit in collaboration with his namesake Mr Collins with "Easy Lover".
11. Who sang "To live inside a twisted cage, sleep beside an empty rage"?

Answer: Sophie B Hawkins

From her hugely successful debut album "Tongues and Tails", "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" has become Sophie's signature tune. Her follow up albums, "Whaler" and "Timbre" were also very successful. In fact, "As I Lay Me Down" from "Whaler" became the longest-running single in the history of the Billboard charts (67 weeks). Sophie has become well known for her activism, especially in the realms of animal rights and breast cancer.
12. In which song will you hear the line "A daydream, for hours it seems, I keep thinking of you, yeah thinking of you"?

Answer: Head Games

From Foreigner's 1979 album of the same name. "Mind Games" was by John Lennon; "Vicious Games" by Yello, and "Foolish Games" by Jewel.
13. Who sang "Do not turn away my friend like a willow I can bend"?

Answer: Stevie Nicks

Stevie wrote "Stand Back" on the day of her wedding; a year and a half later, she was divorced. I don't know if that is significant or not. It was from her 1983 album "The Wild Heart" and reached #5 in the UK singles charts. Incidentally, the keyboards on this track were played by Prince.
14. In which song do you hear the line "In this godless land that delivered me I've cried so many tears even the blind can see"?

Answer: Woman

Born Neneh Mariann Karlsson in 1964 in Sweden, Neneh Cherry adopted the name of her stepfather, acclaimed New York jazz musician Don Cherry. After a couple of minor hits in the later 80's, she finally hit it big with her 1995 album "Man", which includes this superb track which won her the Best Video award at the British Music Awards, as well as her hugely successful collaboration with Youssou N'Dour, "7 Seconds". "Woman In Love" was by Barbra Streisand; "Woman's Work" by Kate Bush, and "Women Around the World at Work" by Canadian band Martha and the Muffins (remember "Echo Beach"?).
15. Lastly, who sang the line "Pick up your feet, got to move to the trick of the beat"?

Answer: Sniff 'n the Tears

One hit wonder from 1978 "Driver's Seat". I've already mentioned Martha and the Muffins. Doctor and the Medics had a hit with a cover of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In the Sky" (since covered by Gareth Gates, featuring, bizarrely, the Kumars) and Question Mark and the Mysterions had another huge one-hit wonder with "96 Tears".
