Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elton recorded the duets "True Love" (1993), "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" (1981) and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (1976) with Pauline Matthews, who is better known by which name?

Answer: Kiki Dee

"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (1976) was Elton's first UK number one single and became his sixth American number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" was the pair's cover of the Four Tops track from 1966 which featured Stevie Wonder on drums, but this failed to chart for Elton and Kiki.
"True Love" (1993) was from Elton's "Duets" (1993) album, on which he performed with many stars including Eric Clapton, Little Richard and Tammy Wynette. The track was released as a single and came so close to repeating the success of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", but was held off the top spot in UK by Meat Loaf and "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" (1993).
2. In 2009, Elton played piano and contributed backing vocals to which band's tribute to their late singer Layne Staley, titled "Black Gives Way To Blue"?

Answer: Alice In Chains

Staley died of a drugs overdose in 2002 and the band went on hiatus for four years, until they reformed in 2006 with William DuVall replacing Staley on lead vocals. After touring several times with the new line up, they were ready to record a new album, the title track of which was their tribute to Staley.
Elton was asked to play on the track as he was a huge influence on both Staley, whose first live gig he attended was an Elton John concert, and guitarist Jerry Cantrell, whose first album was "Elton John Greatest Hits" (1974).
3. On his 1993 album, "Duets" Sir Elton collaborated with someone who may not be a knight, but was both an Order of Canada and National Order of Quebec recipient. Who sang "Born To Lose" with him?

Answer: Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen may have died in 2016, but he left an amazing legacy and remains one of the best live acts I was lucky enough to see.
He and Elton combine so well on this track, originally from 1943 and recorded by Ted Daffan's Texans.
Over the years, it has been covered by many artists including Johnny Cash, The Everly Brothers, Dean Martin, Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton, but I still prefer the version from Elton and Leonard.
4. The 2013 album "...Like Clockwork" included the song "I Sat By The Ocean" which went top 30 in both the Canadian and American Billboard rock charts, as well as "Fairweather Friends" featuring piano and vocals from Elton John. Which rock band released this album?

Answer: Queens Of The Stone Age

Elton was a fan of Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Josh Homme's other band, Them Crooked Vultures and through them started listening to QOTSA. The story goes that he liked what he heard so much, he called Homme and said, "The only thing missing from your band is an actual queen".
Of course Homme wasn't going to turn an offer like that down, and at the recording of the next QOTSA album, Elton turned up and put in what Homme described as "a bad*ss performance", which must be quite the compliment to pay a 66 year old.
5. 1996 saw Elton back in the UK top ten with the song "Live Like Horses". Which "King of the High Cs" was his partner on this song?

Answer: Luciano Pavarotti

Possibly the best known tenor in operatic music, Luciano Pavarotti has recorded with many pop and rock stars, including Simon Le Bon, Meat Loaf and Bono and The Edge from U2 on his "Pavarotti & Friends for the Children of Bosnia" album in 1995 and artists such as Deep Purple, Skunk Anansie and B.B. King on other charity albums in his Pavarotti & Friends series.
6. Elton made his Grammy performance debut in 1999, duetting with Backstreet Boys on "Philadelphia Freedom", but surely his best remembered performance is the duet he did in 2001 with which artist, on the song "Stan"?

Answer: Eminem

Eminem was under fire from LGBT group GLAAD for the use of derogatory terms in his lyrics so turned to the self described "biggest queen in music" to share the stage with him. The pair struck up an immediate friendship, with Elton becoming Eminem's unofficial drug counsellor and helping him become sober, and Eminem buying Elton and his husband intimate jewellery as a wedding gift in 2014.
In 2020, the friendship is still alive as Eminem posted a photo of the pair at the Oscar ceremony, captioned "I got to see my Uncle Elton tonight".
7. "50 Words for Snow" was the 2011 album that featured Elton John on the track, "Snowed in at Wheeler Street". Whose album was this, 33 years after her debut album "The Kick Inside" (1978)

Answer: Kate Bush

Kate Bush secured instant fame and scored a number one hit in UK, Australia and New Zealand with "Wuthering Heights" (1978) from her debut album and although she tends to shy away from the limelight, her unique, haunting vocals have seen artists such as Prince, Peter Gabriel and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd lining up to work with her.
"50 Words for Snow" (2011) continued her run of success as it reached the top five in the UK album chart meaning that all ten of her studio albums up to this point have been top ten albums in UK.
8. "Perfect Day" is well known as a Lou Reed song from 1972, but there was another song with the same title, released in 2001, featuring Elton John. Which band, well remembered for their debut single "Shine" (1994) did Elton team up with?

Answer: Collective Soul

Unfortunately for both Collective Soul and Elton, neither the album, "Blender" (2000) nor the "Perfect Day" single were well received. "Blender" reached the top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart in USA and was a number three hit on the Canadian Album Chart but that was it.
The single fared even worse, hitting number 13 in New Zealand and not troubling any of the other major charts.
9. "Ordinary Man" was a 2020 release featuring Elton John on piano and co vocals, Duff McKagan on bass and Slash on guitar. The track was taken from the album of the same name by which superstar rock vocalist?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

*Ordinary Man" was the first solo album in ten years from far from ordinary man and rock god, Ozzy, and also featured contributions from Tom Morello and Chad Smith as well as rap stars Travis Scott and Post Malone.
The single of the same name charted on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in USA, as did the debut release from the album, "Under the Graveyard" which topped that chart in 2019.
10. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" is one of Elton's best known duets and as well as the original release in 1976, he also had a UK top ten hit with it in 1994. Who was his partner on this release of the track?

Answer: RuPaul

Released on Valentine's Day 1994, this duet between Elton and RuPaul was a hit all over the world, reaching number four in the Portuguese charts and although it peaked at only number 92 in America's Billboard Hot 100, it went as high as number three on the Billboard Dance Club Songs charts.
