Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following men did NOT receive songwriting credit for "Long Tall Sally"?

Answer: Chuck Berry

The song was produced by Blackwell, recorded at J&M studios in New Orleans, and released in March of 1956. It is included on the 1957 album "Here's Little Richard." It peaked at number six on the U.S. Billboard pop chart and at number one on the R&B chart.
2. "Long Tall Sally" was, according to Rolling Stone magazine, aimed at tripping up what white pop singer who took a cover of Little Richard's "Tutti-Frutti" toward the top of the charts?

Answer: Pat Boone

Producer "Bumps" Blackwell complained that the white radio stations refused to play Little Richard's version of the song and therefore made Pat Boone's version a bigger hit. Boone's version of "Tutti Frutti" hit number 12 on the U.S. pop chart while Little Richard's came in lower at only 21. Rolling Stone magazine quotes Blackwell as saying, "So we decided to up the tempo on the follow-up and get the lyrics going so fast that Boone wouldn't be able to get his mouth together to do it!" Pat Boone did record the song, however, and his cover version made it into the top 20 on the pop charts.
3. What hit Little Richard song was on the B-Side of the "Long Tall Sally" single?

Answer: Slippin' and Slidin'

In 1955, Al Collins first recorded the tune as "I Got the Blues for You," and in 1956 Eddie Bo adapted it with new lyrics as "I'm Wise." When Little Richard recorded it, he changed the title to "Slippin' and Slidin' (Peepin' and Hidin')." The song is included on Little Richard's first album, "Here's Little Richard," and also on the specialty album "The Georgia Peach."
4. What group recorded a cover of "Long Tall Sally" in 1964 during their sessions for "A Hard Day's Night"?

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles recorded the song at EMI Studios in London on March 1, 1964. In the end, the song was not included on the "Hard Day's Night" album, but it was included on "The Beatles' Second Album" in the U.S. and released as the "Long Tall Sally" EP in the UK. It was also included on the two-disc compilation "Past Masters" in 1988.
5. What English rock band recorded "Long Tall Sally" as their debut single in 1964?

Answer: The Kinks

The Kinks released the single in February of 1964 with "I Took My Baby Home" on the B-Side. The Kinks covered the song with less of an R&B and more of a contemporary rock feel, which included removing the piano.
6. Which of the following instruments is NOT used on Little Richard's recording of "Long Tall Sally"?

Answer: harmonica

Little Richard supplies vocals and piano for the song. On the single, Lee Allen plays tenor saxophone while Alvin "Red" Tyler plays baritone sax. Earl Palmer is on drums and Frank Fields on double bass while Edgar Blanchard plays guitar.
7. What aunt and uncle are mentioned in "Long Tall Sally"?

Answer: Aunt Mary and Uncle John

"Gonna tell Aunt Mary 'bout Uncle John
He claim he has the misery but he's havin' a lot of fun
Oh baby, yeah baby, woo baby
Havin' me some fun tonight, yeah."

Elvis Presley covered "Long Tall Sally" in 1956. The 12-bar song is also known as "Long Tall Sally (The Thing)." Little Richard's version of the song was ranked number 55 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
8. What is long tall Sally "built for"?

Answer: speed

"Well long, tall Sally
She's built for speed, she got
Everything that Uncle John need, oh baby
Yeah baby, woo baby
Havin' me some fun tonight, yeah."

This song received the Cash Box Triple Crown Award in 1956. "Long Tall Sally" was covered by The Scorpions in 1978.
9. How is long tall Sally described?

Answer: As bald-head

"Well, I saw Uncle John with bald-head Sally
He saw Aunt Mary comin'
And he ducked back in the alley, oh baby
Yeah baby, woo baby
Havin' me some fun tonight, yeah, ow."

"Bald-headed" was sometimes used to mean a woman with very short hair, while "long tall" meant skinny, so it seems Long Tall Sally was not particularly attractive by the standards of the time, but that didn't keep Uncle John from fooling around on Aunt Mary with her. "Bald-head" can also be used to describe someone who is impetuous.
10. What American rock band covered "Long Tall Sally" as a medley with "I'm Down" on their 1980 "Greatest Hits/Live" album?

Answer: Heart

"Greatest Hits/Live" was a compilation album containing live recordings and new tracks. "I'm Down" is a Beatles' song. Heart originally formed in 1967 in Seattle as The Army but became Heart in 1973 after a series of name changes.
