"Tutti Frutti" was released as a single in October of 1955. It was included on Little Richard's debut album "Here's Little Richard," which was released in March of 1957. The album peaked at number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums chart. Rolling Stone magazine rated it the 50th greatest album of all time.

Little Richard's real name was Richard Wayne Penniman. Dorothy La Bostrie also wrote the song with him, and a Joe Lubin is credited as well. The single was produced by Robert "Bumps" Blackwell and released in October of 1955 with "I'm Just a Lonely Guy" on the B-side.

In "I Hear You Knockin'" by Jeff Hannusch (1985), songwriter Dorothy LaBostrie is quoted as saying the name of the song was inspired by a flavor of ice cream called Tutti Fruity that was sold at the drugstore she used to visit on Galvez Street. Today, it is used somewhat generically to describe ice cream full of tropical fruit flavors such as pineapple, banana, orange, and cherry. Sometimes, nuts are included as well.

In Italian, "tutit frutti" means "all fruits."

In a 2015 BBC documentary, drummer Charles Connor claimed the lyrics were originally sexually suggestive but were cleaned up for recording. For example, the original line, "Tutti Frutti, good booty" was replaced with "Tutti Fruity, aww rooty."
