Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Jazz, punch Chad, OK?" "No!" "No?" Which Stygians is this an anagram for? (To get the exact anagram, you must include the word "and" in this one.)

Answer: John and Chuck Panozzo

John and Chuck Panozzo founded the Tradewinds in 1962, along with Dennis DeYoung. The Tradewinds eventually became TW4, and TW4 became STYX.

John died in 1996 after a long battle with alcoholism.

Chuck, who was dealing with AIDS, changed his status to part-time in 1999 in order to deal with his illness.
2. The following is an anagram for which Stygian? "Edgy Innuendos"

Answer: Dennis DeYoung

DeYoung guided the group for decades, but was dismissed in 1999. As a member of the Tradewinds, he originally played the accordian.
3. "Arid mint?" "No!" Is an anagram for which almost Stygian?

Answer: Tom Nardini

Tom Nardini. The "almost", or "non" Stygian. He apparently was a member of the Tradewinds in 1962, but left the group sometime in the sixties. Little is known of this man.
4. "How is junk cruel?" Which lead singer's name does this spell when unscrambled?

Answer: John Curulewski

John Curulewski played guitar, and was a lead singer for STYX all the way through the 1975 "Equinox" album. He died an untimely death in the 1980s.
5. "Enjoys a mug!" This might refer to whom?

Answer: James Young

James Young became a member of STYX back when they were TW4. Interstingly, TW4 actually stood for the name There Were Four. Only problem? With the addition of Young, there were five. No matter, they kept the name until they signed their first record deal, and Wooden Nickel made them change it.
6. "Shot my maw!" He didn't really, but it's a funny anagram. Who is he?

Answer: Tommy Shaw

Tommy Shaw replaced a departing Curulewski on lead vocals, back-up vocals, and guitar. Aside from Shaw's experience, he was chosen because he could hit the high note in "Lady" (the group's most successful song to that point) and was needed to perform back-up vocals on the song for the "Equinox" tour.
7. "Urgent blink" Almost sounds like the name of a group! Which Stygian is this?

Answer: Glen Burtnik

Glen Burtnik first joined STYX for the 1990 album "Edge Of The Century". He was replacing Tommy Shaw, who had become a member of Damn Yankees. When Shaw returned to STYX in 1997, Burtnik was out. But he soon returned when, in 1999, Chuck Panozzo changed his status to part-time. He left the group again in 2003 to spend time with his family.
8. "Dr. Don Mustache" He's not really a doctor, and his name is not Don. But he has been known to wear a mustache. Who is he?

Answer: Todd Sucherman

Todd used to sit in his room as a child, and play the "Grand Illusion" album, pretending to be the drummer for STYX. When John Panozzo became to ill to record, Sucherman ghost-drummed for him. When John passed on, Todd became the official drummer.

Nineteen years after those days spent pretending, Sucherman found himself living out his childhood fantasy. In the words of Dennis DeYoung, "Dreams do come true!"
9. "Wow, near glance!" Is an anagram for the only Stygian born outside the US. Who is he?

Answer: Lawrence Gowan

LG took over for DeYoung in 1999, when Dennis was ousted from the group. Some said he sounded like a young, DDY. Others say he sounded like Paul McCartney. No matter really, since when Dennis was younger people said he sounded like McCartney as well. (In fact, Paul McCartney is the only musician DeYoung said he idolized.) Initially, Gowan filled in well, doing a great DeYoung impression on DDY's songs.

He has since been able to showcase his own style on various releases, and just may be the most vocally talented of all the current Stygians.

He definitely has a "lead singer" quality about him.
10. "Hi, prickly lips!" I don't know if this is really true, but he plays a mean bass. Who is he?

Answer: Ricky Phillips

Phillips was the former bass player for The Babys and Bad English. He replaced a departing Glen Burtnik in 2003. He doesn't do lead vocals, but it's probably not necessary since Young, Shaw, and Gowan all sing leads any way. Also, since Burtnik was originally brought in as an eerily similar vocal match to replace Shaw, Shaw can do Burtnik's songs in concert if need be. Ricky's first studio album with STYX was 2005's "Big Bang Theory".
