Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He started out with a System and later acquired some Silver Bullets. What was the first album for Bob Seger?

Answer: Ramblin' Gamblin' Man

Recorded in 1968, the Bob Seger System released the album in 1969. It was to be called "Tales of Lucy Blue" but the record company demanded a change of title. The album performed well enough to get Seger noticed. In the early 1970s Seger dumped the System and in 1973 added the Silver Bullet Band and went on to many hits.
2. It set the tone for '70s country rock and alt-country. What was the name of the Flying Burrito Brothers' debut album?

Answer: The Gilded Palace of Sin

Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman formed the Flying Burrito Brothers after leaving the Byrds in 1968. The album sort of picked up where the Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" left off. Other Byrds flew in and out and there is a lengthy list of former Burrito Bros. band members. Parsons became friends with Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and had a significant influence on the band, especially their country-style songs of the 1970s.
3. The title came from the book "Wind in the Willows" and the album was heavily psychedelic. What did Pink Floyd offer as their first album?

Answer: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Well-regarded at its debut, "Piper At the Gates of Dawn" continues to impress music critics. Mostly written by then-band leader Syd Barrett, the album contained loud rock and a psychedelic tone, through recording studio tricks. The band went on to record the highly respected albums "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall".
4. "Watching the Detectives" with "Alison", what was the title of Elvis Costello's debut album?

Answer: My Aim Is True

Working with a backup band (Clover) that could not be identified because of contractual problems, Elvis Costello released "My Aim Is True" in 1977. Several of his best-known songs were on it; "Watching the Detectives" was on the U.S. version. The album was called pub rock as well as punk rock and maybe should be called nerd rock, too.
5. Just look at the picture and you might know whose debut album this was.

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

Though it only sold 25,000 copies in its first year of release, 1973's "Greetings From Asbury, Park N.J." brought Bruce Springsteen critical acclaim and got him compared him to Bob Dylan. Adding the E Street Band later on cemented the reputation of "The Boss" as an agent of change on the rock music scene.
6. Which electronic band named their debut album after an electronic toy of the time?

Answer: Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode began in England in 1980. Their album "Speak & Spell" was released in 1981 with most of the songs written by Vince Clarke. After he left the band Martin Gore did most of the group's songwriting, with a different sensibility than Clarke's. Very popular in Europe, "Q" magazine named them as one of the 50 bands that changed the world.
7. A band which came to be known as The Band named their first album after a house they rented in New York state. What is the name of that album?

Answer: Music From Big Pink

Originally calling their group The Hawks, the five band members toured as Bob Dylan's backup band in 1966. Settling down in West Saugerties, New York, and working with Dylan, they changed their name and style, using rock, folk, soul and country influences. The album was named after the nickname of the house they were renting, which had (and still has) pink siding.
8. The first rap album to hit number one came from the Beastie Boys, three white Jewish kids. What name did they give it?

Answer: Licensed to Ill

"Licensed to Ill" was released in December, 1986, and topped the "Billboard" album chart. It received good reviews; "Rolling Stone" magazine headlined their review "Three Idiots Create a Masterpiece". The album sold well at the start and kept selling until in 2015 it finally achieved Diamond status (ten million copies sold). Among the songs on the album was the anthem "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)".
9. Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band never sold a lot of records but they were influential among blues-rock musicians. What was the name of their debut album, which your mom might have approved of?

Answer: Safe as Milk

Well, your mom might have changed her mind after listening to its somewhat negative, experimental lyrics and instrumentation but "Safe as Milk" got a lot of attention for its Delta blues influence and odd time signatures. Joining Captain Beefheart as part of the Magic Band was 20-year old Ry Cooder, whose guitar work is evident on the album. Difficult to work with, Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) saw a number of musicians come and go from the band before he finally went solo. Among those who admired the band's work was John Lennon.
10. Opening to mixed reviews, Guns N' Roses' opener went on to sell 30 million copies, using what name?

Answer: Appetite for Destruction

The album by Guns N' Roses became the best selling debut album by an American band. Many of the songs were begun by band members before the band was put together and finished after it coalesced. Fronted by Axl Rose and guitarist Slash, the album was called the best heavy metal album of the 1980s by several reviewers; "Rolling Stone" magazine added "Appetite for Destruction" to its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
