Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1991, a popular song called "Date Rape" was released. Which band originally made this song?

Answer: Sublime

Sublime were a popular ska-punk band from the 1990s. Their first hit tells the story of a man who raped a woman, then got sentenced to 25 years in prison, where he got raped by his cell mate and the guards ignored his screaming. This song is a warning to all potential rapists out there.

Supposedly the band hated this song. However, many music fans love it. It was one of the most requested songs on Los Angeles's KROQ station and it was one of the most requested songs at Sublime's live shows.

Personally, despite the band's hatred of this song, I think it's the best song they ever did.
2. In 2002, a folk rock band released a song called "Odalisque." What was the name of this band?

Answer: Decemberists

Although Colin Meloy calls himself a hard-core feminist, early in his career he wrote songs about rape. One of these songs was "Odalisque" on the Decemberists' album "Castaways and Cutouts." An odalisque is a female sex slave in Turkey. The Decemberists song tells the story of a woman who tried to escape the harem, but she was caught, and the story does not end well. To make matters worse, the line "Lazy lady had a baby and a sweet sound it made" is repeated twice in the song. Presumably, the first time, it's talking about how the odalisque's mother unwillingly had her as that part of the song tells the back story of the odalisque.

When the line is repeated at the end of the song, it likely implies that just as her mother did, the odalisque gave birth to another daughter she unwillingly had, and possibly it goes on and on like this forever.
3. This song by KISS mentions corrupt preachers. What is it called?

Answer: It Never Goes Away

"Heartless, rich, and greedy watch the churches rape the needy while we pray for salvation, preachers yield to temptation."

This song calls out church pastors who take advantage of their power... out on young women.

This song was on an album called "Carnival of Souls," an album that was recorded in the mid 1990s but not released until 1997. It's a shame this album didn't get more attention from the public and the radio stations than it did, because it has songs that bring up societal issues that need to be addressed.
4. In 1993, a popular song called "Rape Me" was released. Which band made this song?

Answer: Nirvana

This often-misinterpreted song actually has basically the same message as Sublime's song "Date Rape." The narrator in this song is basically saying "Go ahead and rape me, because then you'll got to prison and you'll get raped a lot more and a lot worse than I was." The woman (or possibly man) isn't actually asking to be raped. She's giving the rapist the same warning that Sublime gave.

Another Nirvana song about rape is "Polly," which tells the sadly true story of a young girl who was kidnapped and raped after a Nirvana concert.
5. Which British Invasion band sang the controversial 1971 hit "Brown Sugar?"

Answer: Rolling Stones

This song is catchy and upbeat, some people might not really notice the lyrics. For example, it's easy to think singer Mick Jagger sang "Hear him with the women just around midnight" which doesn't sound too bad. However, he actually sang "Hear him WHIP the women just around midnight."

This song seems to be about white slave owners in the United States and how they treated their young black female slaves. It is was a top five hit in several countries. In China, when the Rolling Stones do concerts there, they are forbidden from playing this song.
6. Which band made the 1992 hit "Sex Type Thing?"

Answer: Stone Temple Pilots

"I am a man, a man I'll give ya something that ya won't forget. I said you shouldn't have worn that dress. I said you shouldn't have worn that dress, worn that dress."

This popular song drew some controversy from the lines above. Scot Weiland said that he wasn't advocating FOR rape. He was just trying to show how many people in the United States view rape. Many Americans blame the victim, often asking what she was wearing. Scot Weiland's point is, that's wrong. Hence, this song does not advocate for rape. It advocates AGAINST rape.
7. This popular singer sang a story of her own experience with the matter in a 2017 song called "Prayin'." Who was she?

Answer: Ke$ha

In 2016, Ke$ha took her former producer Dr. Luke to court, claiming that he raped her. The case was dismissed because the alleged incidents happened in 2008 (meaning they were eight years old at the time) so the U.S.'s "Statute of limitations" law kicked in.

The law says that you can't accuse someone of a crime after too much time has gone by. However, this doesn't mean that the rape didn't happen. In 2017, Ke$ha released the song "Prayin'" which is believed to be about the the time Dr. Luke raped her.

The timing of the release of this song, and lyrics such as "You brought the flames and you put me through hell," make this interpretation seem plausible.
8. This female pop star sang in 2015 that you don't understand sexual violence "Til it Happens to You." Who was she?

Answer: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga and Diane Warren wrote the song ""Til It Happens to You" for the documentary film "The Hunting Ground," which is about rape on college campuses. The song was also used in a Public Service Announcement video directed by Catherine Hardwicke, which also was made to bring awareness to rape on college campuses. Lady Gaga says that she is a victim of rape herself, and that she had an aunt who was raped.

In her aunt's case, the suffering from the rape worsened her Lupus, which ultimately killed her.
9. This 1991 song by Tori Amos, according to her, is a true story about a time she was raped at knife-point. What's the name of the song?

Answer: Me and a Gun

The song is called "Me and a Gun," but according to Tori Amos, the man actually had a knife not a gun. Here's what Tori Amos had to say about the song:

"I'll never talk about it at this level again but let me ask you. Why have I survived that kind of night, when other women didn't?

How am I alive to tell you this tale when he was ready to slice me up? In the song I say it was 'Me and a Gun' but it wasn't a gun. It was a knife he had. And the idea was to take me to his friends and cut me up, and he kept telling me that, for hours. And if he hadn't needed more drugs I would have been just one more news report, where you see the parents grieving for their daughter.

And I was singing hymns, as I say in the song, because he told me to. I sang to stay alive. Yet I survived that torture, which left me urinating all over myself and left me paralyzed for years. That's what that night was all about, mutilation, more than violation through sex.

I really do feel as though I was psychologically mutilated that night and that now I'm trying to put the pieces back together again. Through love, not hatred. And through my music. My strength has been to open again, to life, and my victory is the fact that, despite it all, I kept alive my vulnerability."
10. Who released a song called "Sullen Girl" in 1996?

Answer: Fiona Apple

"He washed me ashore and he took my pearl and left an empty shell of me."

The above lyrics put the rest of the song's lyrics in context. Fiona Apple says that this song is about when she was 12 and raped by a stranger.

This song is on Fiona Apple's 1996 debut album "Tidal." The album has sold nearly three million copies worldwide.
