Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1950, "Mona Lisa" by Nat King Cole. What is the next line in the song? "Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa? Or is this your way to hide a broken heart? Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep..."

Answer: "They just lie there and die there"

"Mona Lisa" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1950. It was written for the film "Captain Carey, U.S.A" starring Alan Ladd. The songwriters were Ray Evans and Jay Livingston. Cole's version of this song spent eight weeks at the top of the billboard charts in 1950. The song has been covered many times by artists like Elvis Presley and Harry Connick Jr.
2. 1951, "Come On-a My House" by Rosemary Clooney. Which of the following is NOT something the singer will give if you "come on-a" her house?

Answer: Rhubarb pie

"Come On-a My House" was actually written in 1939, over a decade before it was released. It debuted in the off-Broadway play "The Son". Neither the play nor the song was popular until Rosemary Clooney covered it in 1951. It was written by Ross Bagdasarian, who is best known for creating "Alvin and the Chipmunks".

Among some of the other goodies the sing will give out, are a peach, a pear, a marriage ring, figs, plums and dates.
3. 1952, "You Belong to Me" by Jo Stafford. What is the missing line? "See the marketplace in old Algiers. ________________________. But remember when a dream appears. You belong to me."

Answer: "Send me photographs and souvenirs"

All of the incorrect answer choices are lyrics from the song but "Send me photographs and souvenirs" is the one that correctly fills in the blank.

"You Belong to Me" was originally recorded by Joni James in 1952 but it was not popular. It did not take off until it was covered by Jo Stafford and Patti Pag(among others) later in 1952. It reached the top of the music charts in both the U.S. and the U.K.
4. 1953, "Crying in the Chapel" by Darrell Glenn. What is the next line of the song? "You saw me crying in the chapel. The tears I shed were tears of joy. I know the meaning of contentment..."

Answer: "I am happy with the Lord"

"Crying in the Chapel" was written by songwriter Artie Glenn and recorded by his teenage son Darrell. The song (and Darrell) were rejected by a number of recording companies until Artie convinced a small, local recording studio in Knoxville, Tennessee to take the song. It was a hit and the song eventually became popular nationwide. It reached number six on the Billboard chart.

The next line in the song is "and tell him that his lonesome nights are over".

"Mr. Sandman" was written by Pat Ballard and first recorded Vaughn Monroe in 1954 but it was not a hit. It did not become a popular song until the Chordettes recorded it later in the year. The song has been used countless times in various television programs and movies. One of the most iconic uses was in an episode of "The Golden Girls" and was one of that show's most memorable scenes.

7. 1956, "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis Presley. What two words fill in the blanks? "You can burn my house, steal my car, drink my liquor from an old ____ ____".
