Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these became king of England in 1422, at only nine months of age?

Answer: Henry VI

The son of Henry V, Henry VI succeeded his father while still a baby, with the kingdom ruled by regents, primarily his uncles. His reign covered two periods - from 1422 until 1461, when the throne was usurped by the Duke of York, who took the title of Edward IV.

Henry VI briefly returned to the throne in 1470 before dying, possibly by murder, in 1471. Henry's reign began during the Hundred Years War, which lasted from 1337 until 1453, and was also marked by the Wars of the Roses (he was a Lancastrian), from 1455-1487, making him notable by being monarch during two of the most turbulent times in English history.
2. King Oyo (Rukidi IV) became the ruler of Toro in 1995, aged three. Formerly an independent state, Toro is part of which African country?

Answer: Uganda

Also known as Tooro, Toro is one of four historic kingdoms of Uganda, from the sixteenth century. The kingdoms, and their monarchs, were abolished in 1967, although Rukidi's father, Olimi III still styled himself as Omukama, or king. The monarchy was reinstated in 1993, with Rukidi IV succeeding his late father, and being crowned in 2010.

The role is primarily ceremonial, maintaining the culture of the Batooro people, but King Oyo also works for the wellbeing of his subjects.
3. Ivan IV, the Terrible, was the first Tsar of Russia. What was his original title when he came to power, at the age of three, in 1533?

Answer: Grand Prince of Moscow

Ivan IV held the title of Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 until his death in 1584, and also became Tsar of Russia in 1547. The struggles for supremacy between various members of Russian nobility during his youth left him with feelings of distrust for them and many were purged when he came to power. Ivan's time in power saw changes in the style of government in Russia, with most of it held by the Tsar himself.

The name by which he is widely known in the west is a misnomer, with many sources saying that 'the Formidable' is a much better translation.
4. John I of France was born in 1316, already a king as his father had died before his birth. He remained a monarch for his whole life, which lasted how long?

Answer: Five days

Claiming a five day old boy as a man might be a stretch, but he was certainly a king - briefly. He is also known as John the Posthumous, as his father, Louis X, died in June 1316 while John wasn't born until October of the same year. He lived for only a few days with the cause of his death unknown. Rumours abounded that the death was at the hands of his uncle, Philip, who was both regent during the brief reign and his successor, as Philip V, known as Philip the Tall. Nothing was proven, though, and probably never will be.
5. The last emperor of China was a member of the Qing dynasty and came to power as a two year old child in 1908. Who was he?

Answer: Puyi

Puyi succeeded his uncle, and was emperor for only three years before abdicating, a situation forced on him following the Chinese Revolution of 1912. The imperial system, or rule by emperors, had lasted around 2,000 years and the Qing dynasty itself had held power for over 250 years. Puyi adopted the western first name of Henry, and remained in Beijing until 1924.

A fictional version of his life was told in the 1987 film 'The Last Emperor'.
6. Murad IV became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire at the age of eleven. He was born and died in which of these cities?

Answer: Istanbul (Constantinople)

Born in 1612, Murad's reign began in 1623 with his mother acting as regent. Power was mainly in the hands of the military, who regularly demanded, and obtained, the execution of government officials. Once Murad came to power, he ruthlessly suppressed the rebels, as the army was perceived, and brought a semblance of order to the region.

He died in 1640, aged only 27, from cirrhosis brought on by the abuse of alcohol. According to some sources, he claimed that: "Wine is such a devil that I have to protect my people by drinking all of it."
7. Among the best known boy kings, Tutankhamun became Pharaoh of Egypt when he was about nine years old. Around how old was he when he died?

Answer: 18 or 19

The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 was a major historical event, since the tomb had remained substantially untouched since the burial of the Pharaoh. The treasures discovered at the time have been well documented and displayed in various places around the world. Tutankhamun is believed to have reigned from around 1341 BC until 1323 BC, with various theories put forward to explain his death at such a young age. Accidental death, or death from disease, are the most widely accepted explanations.
8. Sobhuza II became ruler of Swaziland, known as Eswatini since 2018, at the age of four months. For how long did he rule?

Answer: Over eighty years

Sobhuza's father, Ngwane V, died in December 1899 when his son was still a young baby. Sobhuza's mother and uncle ran the country until he came of age in 1921, with his coronation taking place in December of that year. He remained in power until his death in 1982, having established a record reign of 82 years, 254 days. Sobhuza's successor was Msawti III, one of his many sons - he is believed to have fathered over two hundred children from seventy wives, so competition was fierce.
9. Alfonso XIII became king as soon as he was born, his father having died six months earlier. Of which country was he the ruler?

Answer: Spain

Alfonso's reign lasted until 1931, when republicans won governmental power in Spain, with Alfonso seeking sanctuary in Italy. Spain itself then went through a period of Civil War, with Franco becoming leader in 1939. Alfonso officially abdicated the throne in 1931 and died ten years later, still in exile.

The monarchy was restored in Spain in 1975, with Alfonso's grandson, Juan Carlos I, as King.
10. The last Tsar of Bulgaria succeeded his father at the age of six in 1943, with the monarchy being abolished three years later. What was his name?

Answer: Simeon II

Simeon was too young to reign in his own right, so three regents - his uncle, the prime minister and a high ranking army officer - were in charge of the country. In 1944, the USSR invaded Bulgaria, deposing the regents, who were eventually executed in 1945, along with many others. Simeon, his mother and sister were exiled in 1946 following a referendum which voted for the abolition of the monarchy. That isn't quite the end of his story, though, as Simeon returned to Bulgaria in 1996, formed a political party and became Prime Minister for four years from 2001.
