Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Peter the Great shared rule of Russia with his half brother at the start of his reign. What was this brother's name?

Answer: Ivan V

Peter's brother was actually older than him, but was so sickly, Ivan didn't want to be tsar at all. They ruled together from 1682 until Ivan's death from natural causes in 1696.
2. Peter married young for political reasons. What was his first wife's name?

Answer: Eudoxia

Peter and Eudoxia had a single child, Alexei. Peter disliked Eudoxia immensely and had her isolated in a monastery upon returning from his grand tour of Europe.
3. A large part of Peter's reign was spent involved in the Great Northern War (1700-1721). Russia, Denmark, Saxony and who were allied against Sweden at the onset of the war?

Answer: Poland

Interestingly, Denmark dropped out almost immediately and Poland in 1706, so Peter was largely left to fight the Swedish alone.
4. Who was the king of Sweden and Peter's nemesis during the Great Northern War?

Answer: Charles XII

Charles XII ascended to the throne at age 15 and left for war three years later. He didn't return to Sweden until towards the end of the war, and only then to collect more troops.
5. Perhaps Peter's most tangible achievement was the founding of St. Petersburg on the Baltic. On what river was the city founded?

Answer: Neva River

The Neva gave Peter his all-important port on the Baltic. Unfortunately, the river frequently flooded, often swamping the city. St. Petersburg's status as the capital was not made official in Peter's time. Government offices simply moved so they could be near the tsar.
6. Which battle of the Great Northern War was the turning point for the Russian war effort?

Answer: Poltava

Peter so soundly defeated Charles XII's army at Poltava that this battle marked the end of Sweden as a major European power and the emergence of Russia as a new one.
7. Peter's son Alexei incurred his father's wrath and was later condemned to be executed for treason.

Answer: True

Alexei didn't share in his father's military ambitions. When Peter gave Alexei an ultimatum demanding his participation, Alexei fled Russia to the protection of the Holy Roman Empire. Alexei was tried for treason upon being brought back to Russia and sentenced to death. According to the official reports, Peter never actually signed the death warrant. Alexei died in custody after weeks of torture before Peter could make a decision.
8. Peter is said to have married her in secret in 1707, then publicly in 1712. In 1724 Peter made her co-ruler of Russia.

Answer: Catherine I

They had 11 children together, though all but Anna and Elizabeth died in childhood.
9. Peter met this famous ruler of both the Netherlands and England during his grand tour of Europe.

Answer: William of Orange

William arranged for Peter to work at the East India shipyards so he could learn modern shipbuilding practices. William ruled jointly with his wife, Mary. William and Mary College in Virginia is named in their honor.
10. Peter implemented a law in Russia forbidding beards unless one had purchased a royal writ. This change in the law was enthusiastically embraced by the people of Russia.

Answer: False

The people of Russia chafed under this new law, which was just the beginning of a series of sweeping new pro-western laws. Beards were seen as very much a part of Russian culture.
