Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. American football player Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix has one of the friendlier nicknames you will ever hear. What does everyone call him?

Answer: Ha Ha

Clinton Dix played his college football at Alabama before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2014. He has been called Ha Ha all his life, nicknamed so by his grandmother, because people constantly mis-pronounced his first name.
2. Most people will know this one - Kanye West and Kim Kardashian couldn't be expected to choose a typical baby name. What did they name their first child?

Answer: North

Do you really want additional information for this question?
3. "Mad Jack" Churchill was a British officer during World War II who has what interesting distinction?

Answer: He was the last known person to kill someone in battle using a bow and arrow

Known for believing that an officer was not properly dressed if he went into battle without his sword, Mad Jack was quite a fascinating character. In addition to using a longbow to kill a German soldier during a battle in Northern France in 1940, he would play his troops into action on his bagpipes.

He was quite a hero in WWII, twice awarded the Distinguished Service Order and escaping a concentration camp. He was recaptured, and when he was released at the end of the war the commandant returned his sword and bagpipes to him.
4. Simo Häyhä can make it into a quiz on interesting names based on just his proper name alone. But what bad ass nickname did he receive as a soldier in WWII?

Answer: White Death

During the Winter War (1939-1940) between Finland and the Soviet Union, Häyhä served as a sniper for the Finnish Army against the Red Army and was credited with 505 sniper kills, although the number could be higher. This was the highest number of sniper kills recorded in any major war up until that point.
5. Former U.S. president Richard Nixon had a unique middle name that happens to be the same as the name of a character on the Simpsons (though spelled a little differently). What is that unusual name?

Answer: Milhous

Milhous was President Nixon's mother's maiden name. On the Simpsons, Milhouse van Houten is Bart Simpson's best friend. While the character was named by Matt Groening (the creator of the Simpsons) after President Nixon's middle name, it is revealed in later years of the show that Milhouse is actually short for Mussolini. Poor guy!
6. Sports stars often have unusual names. Which of the following was a real American football player?

Answer: Manu Tuiasosopo

Manu'ula (Manu) Asovalu Tuiasosopo was a great defensive end for Seattle and San Francisco from 1979-1986. He won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers in 1984. He was born in LA, but his family came from Samoa. All the other names are from the Key & Peele sketch - the East West Bowl - which I highly recommend if you have not seen it.
7. We all know the French military officer who provided invaluable service to the American revolutionaries simply as Lafayette. But that was, of course, his title - the Marquis de Lafayette. His actual name was quite a mouthful. He actually had many first and middle names. Which of the following was NOT one of his names?

Answer: Louis

His full name was Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. He fought enthusiastically for the American side in the Revolutionary War, as well as working to raise troops and funds for the cause. After the war he had a difficult role during the French Revolution - attempting to guard the king and his family.

Despite that unenviable assignment he was always a firm republican, opposing the monarchy and later Napoleon. His return to the U.S. in 1824 was a huge event, with great celebrations and many monuments built in his honor, including the city of Fayetteville North Carolina being named after him.
8. Baseball players of the 19th century had some of the absolutely best nicknames. And a few still hold some all-time major league records. What major league baseball record is shared by George "Piano Legs" Gore and "Sliding" Billy Hamilton?

Answer: Most stolen bases in one game

They each stole seven bases in one game. Piano Legs Gore did it in 1881 with the Chicago White Stockings, and Sliding Billy did it 1894 with the Philadelphia Phillies. George Gore was quite a talent, leading the league in hitting during his second season.

But hard living shortened his career and effectiveness; though not his life - he lived until he was 79. Sliding Billy was far more successful, ultimately inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1961.
9. Arguably the greatest soccer player in the world is Lionel Messi, the Argentine who has played most of his career for FC Barcelona. He also has one of the more amusing and creative nicknames. What is it?

Answer: The Atomic Flea

Due to his short stature, but explosive playmaking and scoring ability, Messi has been called the Atomic Flea by Spanish media.

The other nicknames belong to assorted, retired sports stars. The Worm is Dennis Rodman (American basketball player and all around weird guy), the Divine Ponytail is Roberto Baggio (Italian footballer), and Toast is Elvis Patterson (American football player) who got the name because he was a defensive back who had a tendency to get "burnt" on long touchdown passes.
10. The only person I have ever heard of named "Button" is Button Gwinnett who was a figure during the American Revolution. Which of the following is NOT true of Button?

Answer: He was a very successful merchant and trader in Georgia

Button Gwinnett was one of the more obscure signers of the Declaration of Independence, and as a result of his obscurity and the fact that he died a year after signing the Declaration, his signature is rare and highly prized by collectors. He was killed in a duel by a political rival Lachlan McIntosh (Lachlan, hmm, almost as good as Button) in 1777. Gwinnett was President of the Georgia Provisional Congress and commander of the military and ordered McIntosh to invade British controlled East Florida.

The invasion failed and both men blamed the other, with the feud ending in a duel - causing the un-buttoning of Mr. Gwinnett. His dueling and business skills were similar - he was never a very successful businessman.
