Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first enclosure is labelled 'Group Captain Cunningham'. It's very dark in there, but you can see eyes shining! During WWII, the British authorities, in an attempt to conceal their use of Airborne Interception, later known as radar, claimed that night fighters ate a lot of carrots! As a result of his 14 night-fighting victories, what nickname was given to John Cunningham?

Answer: Cat's eyes

Group Captain Cunningham was awarded the DSC and two bars and DFC and Bar. After the war he became a test pilot. A modest man, he disliked his nickname. Dying in 2002, he was one of the last of 'The Few'.
2. In the next enclosure, you can't quite see the exhibit, but there's a strange noise coming from the enclosure! Chester Arthur Burnett, the influential Blues musician, was given what nickname by his grandfather?

Answer: Howlin' Wolf

Howlin' Wolf was ranked 51 in 'Rolling Stone' magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time of 2004. In his last album, recorded in 1973, Howlin' Wolf forecast a black American President in his song "Coon on the Moon".
3. The next enclosure is laid out in a very distinctive landscape. During WWII where did a Fox fight against the Rats?

Answer: North Africa

Lots of sand in the enclosure, with a glimpse of a sea - could it be the Mediterranean? - in the distance. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, nicknamed 'The Desert Fox', leader of the German Afrika Corps, fought the British 7th Armoured Division, nicknamed 'The Desert Rats' in North Africa.
4. The next enclosure looks like a football stadium. Gosh, the crowd must have a massive feed bill! Liverpool and England (among other teams) soccer player and captain Emlyn Hughes, who sadly died aged 57 from a brain tumour, shared his nickname with which native American war leader?

Answer: Crazy Horse

Hughes earned the nickname 'Crazy Horse' while at Liverpool, following an illegal rugby tackle on a Newcastle United player. Crazy Horse was the war leader of the Oglala Lakota. All the wrong answers are characters from the film 'Dances with Wolves'.
5. The next enclosure is not very big, but it's light and airy, with a nice perch. Interestedly, you peer at the label, but it's in French! What sort of zoo is this? So, which French singer, named for the British nurse executed in WWI and born with the surname Gassion, might the label refer to?

Answer: Edith Piaf

The label reads "La Môme Piaf" - you remind yourself to get the zoo to put "The Little Sparrow" for English speakers. Edith Piaf (named for Nurse Edith Cavell and given the nickname of sparrow as a singer) was a balladeer with a tragic life and death, who is regarded as an icon in France. If you would like to know more about her, watch the 2007 film "La Vie En Rose". The wrong answers are all French films (among other things).
6. A medium size enclosure comes next. There are a few surfaces too - grass, clay and hard. What big bars too! The tennis player, Vitas Gerulaitis, tragically died of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1994. What was his 'animal' nickname?

Answer: The Lithuanian Lion

Vitas Gerulaitis was born in New York to Lithunian parents. He was a vibrant, exciting player who won the Australian Open in 1977 and also took a doubles title at Wimbledon, where he reached the semi-finals twice in the singles, among other top-rated tournaments.
7. More big bars on the next enclosure - you must be in the Big Cats section. Tipu Sultan of India was also known by which name of the choices?

Answer: The Tiger of Mysore

Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu, ruler of Mysore, died in Srirangapattana on 4 May 1799. As a Muslim ruler of Hindu subjects, his legacy is controversial today. Of the wrong answers, Emperor Haile Selassie I was known as 'The Lion of Judah' among other titles, the English soccer player Nat Lofthouse was known as 'The Lion of Vienna' and The Tygers of Pan Tang are a heavy metal band from the Northeast of England.
8. Hmm - interesting enclosure next. Very green - but what's that ice floe doing in there? What animal nickname was given to US golfer Craig Stadler - partly because of his generous build and partly because of a distinctive facial feature?

Answer: The walrus

He could well have shared the enclosure with Mervyn Hughes, the Australian cricketer, as both were large men with walrus moustaches. Hughes, indeed, has insured his 'tache for thousands of pounds!
9. Another very sturdy enclosure here! Which animal nickname is shared by Status Quo guitarist John Edwards and US professional wrestler Terry Gerin - and both of them could belong to the Leeds Rugby League team?

Answer: Rhino

I hope that the sturdy enclosure led you to Rhino. Status Quo bassist John Edwards, who also played with Peter Green, was given the nickname for his clumsiness. Terry Gerin has twice been a World Champion in various versions of professional wrestling. Leeds RL are known as Leeds Rhinos.
10. The last enclosure is very small, but extremely nice with a little house, and a wheel. What nickname is Richard Hammond, who nearly died in a horrific high speed (280mph (450 km/h)) crash while filming for 'Top Gear', known by?

Answer: Hamster

Richard Hammond is regularly teased with his nickname by his fellow 'Top Gear' presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May. He is extremely lucky to be alive after the jet-powered dragster crash in 2006 - and now likes celery (he didn't before the crash..)
