Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "La ilaha illala..." is called?

Answer: Shahada

This is the first and most important pillar in Islam, (I testify that there is no God but God and Muhammad peace be upon him is His final messenger). It is the affirmation of faith, and it implies total submission and complete obedience to God's commandments both in utterances and actions, whether explicit or implicit.
2. Muslims perform five obligatory prayers daily. What are these called?

Answer: Salaah

'Zakah' is charity, 'Saum' is fasting, and 'Hajj' is the pilgrimage to the Holy Land. When the Holy Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was first given the conditions of Salaah (also written as Salah and Salat) on the night of the Ascension, God commanded him to pray fifty times a day! Prophet Moses, however, convinced him to go back a few times and it was reduced to five.
3. Muslims are forbidden to do which of the following?

Answer: All of these

Most people already know that Muslims are not allowed to eat swine and consume alcohol, but a lot of you don't know about interest, I'm sure. Remember, Christians are also forbidden to partake of "usury"?
4. What do Muslims believe that Jesus was?

Answer: A messenger of God

Prophet Jesus is known as Isa in Islam. Muslims believe that he was never crucified, and will return to earth before the end to live out his mortal life. This is stated in the Qur'an as follows: "And because of their saying (in boast), "We killed Messiah (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allâh," - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them, the resemblance of Jesus was put over another man (and they killed that man)... Ch 4:157, and "But Allah raised him (Jesus) up (with his body and soul) to Himself and he is in the heavens... Ch 4:158
5. What is the belief in the "oneness of God" termed?

Answer: Tawheed

Literally, the word tawheed means unification (to make something one). However, the Islamic definition, it is in reference to God being singled out alone, in all that is particular to Him. The opposite of 'Tawheed' is 'Shirk' which is to associate partners with God by giving that which belongs to Him, to others. 'Tafsir' is the proper pronunciation of the Qur'an in Arabic, and 'Aqeeda' is Islamic creed.
6. Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the only revealed book.

Answer: False

There are other revealed books like the Torah, Talmud and New Testament. The Qur'an's revelation to the Holy Prophet through the angel Gabriel began in a cave in Mount Hira when he was 40, and was completed over a period of 23 years.
7. How many chapters, or surahs, does the Qur'an contain?

Answer: 114

Although Surah Fatiha is the first chapter of the Qur'an, the first chapter that was revealed is Surah Al Alaq - The Clot (Chapter 96). The first words revealed was the command "Read! In the name of your Lord Who has created all that exists". The 23 years of revelation resulted in a book which comprised of 114 chapters and 6,236 verses (according to the most prevalent interpretation).
8. What does "Hijab" refer to?

Answer: The entire mode of dress of the female Muslim

The Hijab was made obligatory in order for a woman to protect her chastity, however many 'modern' thinkers believe that it is oppressive to women. As someone who actually wears Hijab myself, it is a symbol of freedom and modesty.
9. Which of the following is NOT a 'sect' of Islam?

Answer: Sikh

Sikhism is an entirely different religion. It was founded by Siri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1469 who laid the basic principles of Sikhism.
10. The term "halal" solely refers to something being lawful to consume.

Answer: False

It actually refers to any act that is not forbidden, and may relate to mode of dress, speech, behaviour etc.
