Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

2. Also known as "stinking willie" in some parts of the world, which of the following wild plants is considered a weed and can cause cirrhosis of the liver when eaten by horses, cows, and pigs?

Answer: ragwort

Ragwort (Jacobea vulgaris) is generally very bitter, so most grazing animals will stay away from it. However, when resources are scarce, these animals will consume it, which is quite dangerous to them. Ragwort is also poisonous to humans, but is very rarely consumed due to its terrible taste.

3. Fish has protein and a lot of this substance. What is the substance fish has that can help prevent cardiovascular disease?

4. Which is the primary discipline being applied in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data?

Answer: Statistics

While all these disciplines might be called on to use data in some way, statistics is the overarching discipline that is applied. Statistics is generally considered to be a branch of mathematics, although there have been efforts to recognise it as a stand-alone branch of science. Like many scientific disciplines, statistics has a long history, with evidence of statistical analyses dating back to the Islamic Golden Age between 700-1200 AD.

The proliferation of the volume and availability of data in the 21st century has dramatically increased the importance and widespread use of statistics, in what has been called the age of 'big data'.

5. While studying the meaning of 'galvanometer', I learned about direct and alternating currents. What is the main difference between these two?

Answer: Direction of flow

In the case of direct and alternating currents, the label refers to the direction in which the electrons flow. In direct current, the electrons always move in the same direction. In alternating current, the charge reverses at regular periods. The two types of currents are both useful in different situations.

In homes, alternating current is used. Direct current can be used when electricity is flowing long distances by using relays.

6. In 1956, Samuel Shenton founded the International Flat Earth Research Society to promote the concept that the earth was flat. To which scientific division has the findings of this society been attributed?

Answer: Pseudoscience

Cover and Curd (1998) stated that "Pseudoscience consists of statements, beliefs, or practices that claim to be both scientific and factual but are incompatible with the scientific method". The Flat Earth Society has a planet model that states the world is a disc, with the North Pole at its epicentre and a 150-foot-high (46 m) cliff of ice, (guarded by police to ensure no one climbs same and jumps off) representing Antarctica, at its exterior edge.

This means the world resembles the symbol of the United Nations, which was used as evidence for this position.

7. In the USA of 1890, Herman Hollerith was responsible for speeding up the process for America to keep tabs on Americans. This achievement was due to what?

Answer: Mechanizing the US Census results

In 1890 Herman Hollerith's tabulating machines were use to process the Census information. The 1880 Census took almost a decade to publish the results; these machines reduced processing time down to two and a half years.

9. We have all heard of numbers but do you know really vast, huge as big as the Universe size numbers? At the time of its introduction (circa 1977), it was the largest specific positive integer ever to have been used in a published mathematical proof. It sometimes reminds me of a cracker.

Answer: Graham's Number

Graham's number is much larger than most other large numbers. It is too large to be 'written out' and fit in the Universe. A googolplex is a punk number compared to the Graham. Grains and stars are minuscule quantities compared to either of the two.

10. In rejecting some tenets of quantum mechanics, Albert Einstein is supposed to have said that God does not play what game with the universe?

Answer: Dice

Einstein was not convinced of the validity of quantum mechanics. He was very skeptical of the ideas of Danish scientist Neils Bohr, who maintained that, at the atomic level, one could only assess the probability of an event, not a certain cause and effect.
