Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do you call a tornado that is over water?

Answer: Waterspout

Waterspouts funnel water into the sky, as opposed to tornadoes, which suck up earth, dirt, and other objects on the ground.
2. A tornado can touch down in a populated area and destroy one home while leaving the home next door virtually untouched.

Answer: True

Tornadoes are wild, rotating columns of air that twist around on the ground, much like a snake, and are sometimes referred to as "Sidewinders". There have been amazing stories of people that have had babies literally pulled out of their arms only to be found nearby, unharmed! Also, some strong tornadoes contain "sub-tornadoes" or "mini-twisters." Many times if the "mini-twister" misses the house, the building can remain intact.
3. Large groups of scientists and curious amateurs actually track tornadoes and attempt to study them "up close and personal". What are they called?

Answer: Storm Chasers

This was demonstrated in the movie "Twister".
4. One of the largest producers of tornadoes is the area above the Mid-Western United States, which includes Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Texas. What is this area commonly referred to as?

Answer: Tornado Alley

This is the area that gets more tornadoes than any other place in the world.
5. Studies have been done to show what area records the most frequent lightning strikes in a calendar year. Where is it?

Answer: The Congo in Central Africa

The highest numbers of lightning strikes, on our planet, are recorded in Central Africa and more specifically the Congo. This part of Africa has thunderstorms all year round for three main reasons: the weather patterns, air flow from the Atlantic Ocean, and enhancement by mountainous areas.
6. When a hurricane hits land, tornadoes are usually formed.

Answer: True

They are usually of the F-1 variety (among the weakest kind).
7. What is considered by scientists to be the strongest type of tornado measured on the Fujita scale?

Answer: F-5

The F-5 is the strongest tornado that is recorded by the Fujita scale (this measures strength, wind speed, and much more), but a tornado in Oklahoma in 1999 had some scientists guessing that it could have been an F6 (unclassified).
8. A tornado can dissipate as soon as it forms.

Answer: True

The atmospheric conditions have to be perfect for a tornado to form. The air is always very unstable during these conditions and they can last for either short or long durations.
9. If the conditions are right for a tornado to form, what does the National Weather Service issue?

Answer: Tornado Watch

A tornado warning is called when there has been a confirmed sighting of a tornado or if radar has picked up indications of a tornado forming.
10. Which of the following words is NOT associated with the path of a tornado?

Answer: Predictable

Tornadoes are not predictable and can change their track at any time. They are true wonders of nature.
