Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many points did Sunderland finish with in the season 2002/03?

Answer: 19

This was the lowest Premiership total since it began in 1992. 19 points from 38 games; 4 wins, 7 draws, and 27 defeats is not a good enough return.
2. How many league games did Sunderland win in the season?

Answer: 4

In a 38 game season, winning 4 games is very poor. Comparing that amount of wins to the season before, 2001-02, 10 games is slightly better.
3. Did Sunderland win a league game in 2003, up until the end of the season in May?

Answer: No

Their last league win in 2002/03 was against Liverpool, a 2-1 win on 15th December 2002. Goals from Gavin McCann and Michael Proctor sealed the win.
4. Who was it against, and what was the score when the top scorer, Kevin Phillips, got his first goal of the season?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur, 2-0

With the season starting in August 2002, his first goal didn't come until the 10th November 2002. That is below his high standard.
5. How many games did Sunderland win away from home?

Answer: 1

The second away game of the season, Leeds United, on the 28th August 2002. SAFC never won another game away from home in the season.
6. In the 2-1 home win over Liverpool, who missed a penalty before Michael Proctor scored the winner?

Answer: Gavin McCann

What a win too! Things were looking up. Little did Sunderland know, and little did the fans know, that this would be the last win of the season. The usual penalty taker, Kevin Phillips, had missed the last few so Gavin McCann stepped up.
7. Against which team did Sunderland accumulate the most points over the two games played in that season?

Answer: Liverpool

SAFC picked up a great 2-1 win at home and a fantastic 0-0 draw at the mighty Anfield. 4 points out of 19 were from Liverpool.
8. After drawing 0-0 with Blackburn Rovers in January 2003, Sunderland lost the remaining league games of the season. How many losses were there?

9. Who was manager of Sunderland when they played Arsenal on 6th October 2002?

Answer: Peter Reid

10. Who was Howard Wilkinson's assistant manager when he was in charge between October 2002 and March 2003?

Answer: Steve Cotterill

Ian Evans was Mick McCarthy's assistant, and Bobby Saxton was Peter Reid's assistant. Kevin Ball, an ex Sunderland captain, was a coach at SAFC.

Answer: Sean Thornton

13. Who scored the winner in the FA Cup tie, in which Sunderland were knocked out against Watford?

Answer: Tommy Smith

Tommy Smith, who later signed for SAFC, had a twice taken penalty. The infringement was becauce Thomas Sorensen came off his line before the first kick was taken.
14. In the Tyne-Wear local derby with Newcastle United, who had a last minute equaliser disallowed?

Answer: Kevin Kyle

SAFC lost 1-0. Out of all the defeats in the season that hurt the most. The infringement was by Sunderland reject Tore Andre Flo. Flo managed 32 appearances and just 6 goals in August 2002. He was Sunderland's most expensive signing and probably the worst.
