Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Darryl Strawberry played for 17 seasons in his career, retiring in 1999. In what year did he win the Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: 1983

'The Straw' won the award in his rookie season. He hit 26 home runs, and the rest of his stats were not that impressive. He beat out Craig McMurtry of Atlanta for the award. Darryl retired with 335 home runs.
2. Which of the following pitching greats, retired with over 500 career wins?

Answer: Denton Young

The others listed didn't even reach 80 career wins. Denton 'Cy' Young and Walter Johnson were the only pitchers in the 20th century to reach the 400 mark. Young retired with 511 wins over 22 seasons. At the end of the 19th century, it was common for pitchers to appear in 40+ games in a season.

His career innings pitched was 7355. Young pitched in 906 games, retiring in 1911. The infamous Cy Young Award, presented to the most outstanding pitcher in a season, was named after him.
3. Five-time Gold Glove catcher Bill Freehan played his entire career with what team?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

There was no Gold Glove Award when the other teams played. This Tiger began his career in 1961, and retired in 1976. He had the honor of catching Denny McLain's 1968 spectacular season of 31-6, and Mickey Lolich's World Series MVP in the same season. Freehan hit 200 home runs in his 15 seasons with the Tigers.
4. Which of the following team names have never existed in Major League baseball?

Answer: Hartford Comets

The Dodgers and Yankees have been long-time franchises. The Seattle Pilots existed only one season in 1969, before becoming the Milwaukee Brewers.
5. Who set a record upon their retirement, for hitting 235 home runs as a Designated Hitter?

Answer: Harold Baines

The others listed were all National League players, which did not have the DH rule. After 22 seasons and 9 moves throughout the American League, Harold hit 235 as a DH. His overall career total was 384. When Baines retired in 2001, Don Baylor was in the back seat with 219.
6. I was a 25 year old rookie in 1880. In my 12 seasons of baseball, I won 309 games, well ahead of Cy Young's later pace. I won the Triple Crown in 1884, and was 59-12 in the season. Who am I?

Answer: Charley Radbourn

When Charley was a rookie, no other player listed had been born yet. Radbourn's Providence Grays defeated the New York Metropolitans in the World Championship Series in 1884 3 games to 0. Charley won all those games. He died in 1897.
7. Which of the following was one of the first inductees into the Hall of Fame?

8. Who was the first southpaw to win a Cy Young Award?

Answer: Warren Spahn

The others listed were all right-handers, but also never pitched. Spahn, a Braves pitcher for 20 of his 21 seasons in baseball, won the award in its 2nd presentation in 1957. He was 21-11, and only had 111 strikeouts. It was the only major award that he had won.
9. What baseball pioneer brought Jackie Robinson into the Major Leagues?

Answer: Branch Rickey

The others listed were NBA stars in the 1960s. Wesley 'Branch' Rickey brought Jackie into the big leagues in 1947, which began the movement for all human beings being allowed to play the game. Something obscure: Rickey was a manager for 10 seasons. Even more: Branch played MLB for 4 seasons himself in the early 1900s.
10. What was Zack Wheat's nickname?

Answer: Buck

Zachary Davis "Buck" Wheat played ball from 1909-1927, all but one season with the Brooklyn franchise. This left-hand hitting Hall of Famer, retired with a .317 batting average.
