Answer: 1897

Northampton's first venture into the Football League was in the 1920-21 season, where they finished 14th in the Third Division.
2. Where did the club first play their home games?

Answer: County Ground

Northampton's first home games were played at the County Ground, where they remained for almost 100 years. In 1993, they moved into the Sixfields Stadium. Northampton Road and Town Avenue do not exist.
3. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: Arthur Jones

Jones was Northampton's manager between 1897-1907, with Chapman (better known for later managing Arsenal) taking the reigns between 1907-12. Bull lasted just one season before Lessons became manager between 1913-19. Other Northampton managers over the years have included Ian Atkins, Terry Fenwick, Clive Walker, and Pat Crerand.
4. In 2005, Ian Taylor was signed by Northampton from which team?

Answer: Derby County

Taylor began his career with non-League Moor Green in 1991. Port Vale snapped him up after one season and he would play there until 1994, before Sheffield Wednesday became interested in the midfielder. After just four months at Hillsborough, Taylor moved to Aston Villa where he would play 233 League games until 2003, when he signed for Derby on a free transfer. Taylor signed for Northampton in June, 2005.
5. Which team did Northampton beat 10-0 in a 1927 League game?

Answer: Walsall

Northampton set a record for their biggest League victory in that 10-0 win over Walsall on 5th November, 1927. Other results that season were an 8-0 win over Leyton in the FA Cup, 6-0 against Merthyr, and 5-0 against Exeter. Northamton finished in second place in the Division Three (South) table, 10 points behind champions, Millwall.
6. To score more than 100 League goals in one season is a rare achievement for any club. However, Northampton did this more than once in the 20th century. How many times did they notch 100+ goals?

Answer: Four

The first of Northampton's ton-up goals came in the 1927-28 season, when they scored 102 goals. In 1952-53, they would score 109 goals to finish third in Division Three (South). Next up was another 109 goals in the 1962-63 Division Three season, when they went on to win the title. The fourth came in the 1986-87 season, when they scored 103 goals to win Division Four.
7. Which of these played the most League games for Northampton?

Answer: Tommy Fowler

Fowler played 521 League games for Northampton between 1946-61. Theo Foley played in 205 league games for the Cobblers between 1961-67. Gleasure played a total of 462 games for the club between 1982-91. Ian Benjamin made 180 total appearances for Northampton between the years of 1984-87.
8. How many goals did George Best score against Northampton in a 1970 FA Cup game for Manchester United?

Answer: Six

Best hit a double hat-trick in a round five FA Cup game on 7th February, 1970. While Northampton crashed out of the cup 8-2, Best's magic shone throughout the ground that day, and he was applauded by both sets of supporters.

The Cobblers finished third in Division Four in the 1960-61 season. Just five years later they made it to Division One. By the time the 1969-70 season came around, Northampton had dropped all the way back down to Division Four again.

English scored 143 goals for Northampton between 1947-60. Bowen hit 120, Lockett scored 110, and Davies notched 103.
