Question 1 of 10
1. The Mt Panorama racetrack is located in Bathurst, about three hours drive west of Sydney, Australia. The most well known event is the Bathurst 1000, held each October, a grueling 1,000 kilometres. OK, strap on your safety harness, and let's go for a drive!

The start and finish lines at the Mt Panorama racetrack are adjacent to the pits. The area does not have a fancy name, like some of the other features on the circuit. What rather obvious name does the first part of the racetrack have?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. At the end of the first straight at Mt Panorama, there is a hard left-hand corner. This turn sees a lot of jockeying for position, especially on the opening lap of a race. If there is going to be an accident, this is probably where it will happen. What ghoulish name is given to this bend? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. After coming through the first corner at Mt Panorama, drivers will start to climb. A nice long straight, with a hump towards the end, and a sharp right-hander at the top. What is this straight called, the second fastest bit of the track? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. At the top of the first straight on the Mt Panorama track, there is a hard right-hander, named after a former mayor of the city. What is the name of this corner? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Coming out of the right hander, we hit The Cutting, a steep and narrow part of the Mt Panorama track. On the right there are a couple of spectator areas. What are the names of these parks? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. McPhillamy Park marks the start of the journey down the mountain in the Bathurst 1000, and is the third of the main spectator areas. On the road, the track is a quick left hander, with the road disappearing at the end of a short straight. The next corner is a slow, plunging corner named after which legend of the Australian racing scene? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. On our quick lap around Bathurst's Mt Panorama, we have just crossed Skyline, and are faced with a series of corners that require a very deft touch of the controls. We are about three-quarters of the way through the hot lap, if we can get through this bit without hitting any walls. What is this section called, that sounds like a letter of the alphabet? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The entrance to the final straight at Mt Panorama was named after a motorbike racer who crashed there. It is a sweeping left-hand turn, and it is important to get a good line through it. What is the name of this corner? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. You are now heading down the mountain on the longest and fastest part of the circuit - time to put her in top gear, and put your pedal to the floor. Your speedometer is hovering around the 300kph mark! It was formerly known as Main Straight, but was renamed in 1939. Which engine part is it now known as? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Only one more corner, and you have survived a lap around the iconic racetrack that is Mt Panorama. What is the last corner on the circuit, a place where a lot of cars come together in braking duels? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Pit Straight

Pit Straight is about 400m long, and the start and finish lines are 140 metres apart, to allow the race to measure exactly 1,000 kilometres. Prior to metrication in 1973, the race was 500 miles, about 120 miles shorter than now.

In races with large fields, such as the Bathurst 1000, the starting grid extends back around the final bend, Murray's Corner.

Bass Strait is not part of any race track - it is the body of water between Tasmania and mainland Australia.

The circuit, opened in 1938, is on the southern outskirts of the city. The track is actually a public road, with several private properties contained inside the 6.2-kilometre track.
2. At the end of the first straight at Mt Panorama, there is a hard left-hand corner. This turn sees a lot of jockeying for position, especially on the opening lap of a race. If there is going to be an accident, this is probably where it will happen. What ghoulish name is given to this bend?

Answer: Hell Corner

There is only a very small run-off area at this corner, so cars on the outside run the risk of being squished against the barrier.

'Dead Man's Curve' was a 1964 hit for Jan and Dean, and the Devil's Marbles are a rock formation in central Australia.
3. After coming through the first corner at Mt Panorama, drivers will start to climb. A nice long straight, with a hump towards the end, and a sharp right-hander at the top. What is this straight called, the second fastest bit of the track?

Answer: Mountain Straight

Mt Panorama is unusual in that it climbs over 170 metres (570 feet), from its lowest to highest points. The trip up Mountain Straight is steep, but it is the second-fastest area on the track.
4. At the top of the first straight on the Mt Panorama track, there is a hard right-hander, named after a former mayor of the city. What is the name of this corner?

Answer: Griffins Bend

Mayor Martin Griffin was the man who had the foresight to construct the track. It was originally called Mount Panorama Scenic Drive when it was opened in 1938, but quickly got converted for car and motorbike races. Cook and Leichhardt are early Australian explorers and Jack Brabham was a champion Formula One driver of the 1950s and 60s- he tried, but never won the big race.

When it is not being used by very fast vehicles, the road is still quite a scenic drive. It is best to obey the speed limit when driving there, however, as the local constabulary have been known to target wannabe car-racers.
5. Coming out of the right hander, we hit The Cutting, a steep and narrow part of the Mt Panorama track. On the right there are a couple of spectator areas. What are the names of these parks?

Answer: Reid Park and Sulman Park

Reid, Sulman and McPhillamy Parks are all named after past members of the local City Council, who played their part in the development of the iconic track.

Lethbridge Park and Wetherill Park are suburbs of Sydney, Mungo Park was a British explorer, Ruth Park was an Australian author. Hyde Park and Central Park are in London and New York and there is also a Hyde Park in central Sydney.

Answer: Peter Brock

Brockie, a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), was known as the 'King of the Mountain' after winning the big race an amazing nine times, all of them in Holden Toranas and Commodores. He was killed in a car crash in Western Australia in 2006. The straight and the sharp corner are now known as 'Brock's Skyline', in his memory.

The other three men listed were also champion drivers, and all tasted success on the mountain.

Answer: The Esses

There are four corners in quick succession, left and right, culminating in the Dipper, a scary left-hander with a sharp dip. In the 1960s and early 70s, watching a line of Morris Minis going nose-to-tail through this section, was just amazing.
8. The entrance to the final straight at Mt Panorama was named after a motorbike racer who crashed there. It is a sweeping left-hand turn, and it is important to get a good line through it. What is the name of this corner?

Answer: Forrest's Elbow

Jack Forrest lost a large lump of flesh and bone from his elbow when he crashed there, doing 140kph, in 1950.

A parson's nose is a piece of chicken meat, Jack's crown is mentioned in a nursery rhyme, and Adam's rib was the Biblical origin of Eve.
9. You are now heading down the mountain on the longest and fastest part of the circuit - time to put her in top gear, and put your pedal to the floor. Your speedometer is hovering around the 300kph mark! It was formerly known as Main Straight, but was renamed in 1939. Which engine part is it now known as?

Answer: Conrod

Conrod was deemed TOO fast, so the Chase was added in 1987 to slow down the racecars. The Chase is a kink in the straight with a very fast right-hand turn, followed by a sharp left, then under the spectator bridge, and back onto the second bit of Conrod. If you glance quickly to your left, you will see the entrance to the Pits.
10. Only one more corner, and you have survived a lap around the iconic racetrack that is Mt Panorama. What is the last corner on the circuit, a place where a lot of cars come together in braking duels?

Answer: Murray's Corner

At the end of Conrod Straight is Murray's Corner, prepare to stand on the brakes and keep your eyes open- it is a favourite passing area, but equally famous for cars being bumped out of the race and into the huge sandpit. The chequered flag is only a couple of hundred metres away, so there is always a mad dash for the finish line.

The Murrumbidgee, Darling and Lachlan are all rivers in New South Wales.
