Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This team spent its first season in Dallas, Texas. They have won at least one Super Bowl and have played in more than one. They started playing in the American Football League, and their team colors during those Super Bowls were red and white.

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

In 1960, the American Football League began play with the Dallas Texans as one of the teams. After two years, this team moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs. They were owned by Lamar Hunt and made it to Super Bowl I, where they lost to the powerhouse Green Bay Packers of the National Football League, 35-10. Three years later, the Chiefs made it back to the Super Bowl, and did so as a wildcard team.

They first beat the defending champion New York Jets in New York 13-6, and then won in Oakland over the Raiders 17-7.

The AFC had finally validated itself by defeating the NFL the year earlier, but the Minnesota Vikings, led by Joe Caap, were still heavily favored in Super Bowl IV over the Chiefs. Kansas City won, however, 23-7 and a merger between the two leagues followed. From that year on, there was only an NFL, and the Super Bowl was played between the winner of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. For many years the Chiefs played in Arrowhead Stadium which was hostile territory for road teams as everyone in the stadium would wear red.
2. Franco Harris ended his career here. During the 1983-1984 season, this team was one game away from the Super Bowl. They have played in both the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (American Football Conference).

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL as an expansion team along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. They played in the NFC West for a season before moving to the AFC West in 1977. They only won the AFC West twice in the span of time they resided in that division from 1978-2001. Those years were in 1988 and 1999.

In January of 1989, they lost a divisional playoff game to Cincinatti on the road, 21-13. In January of 2000, they lost an opening home game to the Miami Dolphins, 19-17, which was also Dan Marino's last win.

In January of 1984, they won a home playoff game over the rival Denver Broncos 31-7 and then upset the Miami Dolphins 27-20 in Miami before going to Los Angeles to play the Raiders for the AFC Championship. They had beaten L.A. twice that season but the Raiders had still won the division at 12-4.

The third time was not a charm as they lost to the Raiders 30-14. The Seahawks moved back to the NFC West in the 2001-2002 season. Franco Harris played several seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but finished his career in Seattle.
3. This team has lost at least four Super Bowls. In their first Super Bowl appearance, their starting quarterback had played for the team that they were playing against in a prior Super Bowl.

Answer: Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos had a 0-4 Super Bowl record at one time, that they shared with the 0-4 Minnesota Vikings, and the 0-4 Buffalo Bills (who did it consecutively), before winning back-to-back championships with victories in Super Bowl XXXII over the Green Bay Packers 31-24, and XXXII 31-19 over the Atlanta Falcons.

In 5 out of 6 Super Bowl appearances, John Elway was their starting quarterback. However, in Super Bowl XII, the Denver Broncos met the Dallas Cowboys in the New Orleans Superdome. The starting quarterback for the Broncos was Craig Morton who had started and lost Super Bowl V for the Cowboys to the Baltimore Colts, 16-13.

He did not fare much better in this Super Bowl as the Cowboys won handily, 27-10. There were two MVP's for the Cowboys in that Super Bowl, Co-MVP's Harvey Martin and Randy White.
4. This team drafted John Elway, Marshall Faulk, and Jeff George. On a Monday Night game in 1988, Eric Dickerson had 4 touchdowns rushing for them as they built up a 52-10 lead over the Denver Broncos at halftime.

Answer: Colts

This goes to prove that just because a team drafts a guy, that he will not necessarily stay with that team or have success with them. John Elway was traded in his rookie year of 1983 to the Denver Broncos where he had an illustrious career. Marshall Faulk had some solid seasons in Indianapolis but really exploded when he was traded on draft day to the St. Louis Rams in 1999.

The Colts picked up Edgerrin James that year, passing up on Ricky Williams. Jeff George was the overall number one pick in 1990 but never blossomed in the NFL even with a rocket arm.

He had stints with the Falcons, Raiders, Vikings, and Chiefs after that. Eric Dickerson had most of his career rushing yards with the Los Angeles Rams, but had over 200 in a 1988 Monday Night Football route over the Denver Broncos 55-23.

He had over 200 yards in the fist half alone.
5. These two teams combined to make one team in 1944, and then went back to becoming two separate teams the year after that.

Answer: Cardinals and Steelers

In 1944, the Chicago Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers became Card-Pitt for one year. They went back to being their respective teams after that and the Cardinals won their first NFL Championship in 1948. The Steelers did not win a championship until 1975, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 in Super Bowl IX. That would be the first of four Super Bowl victories in six years for the Steelers.

There was a year that the Philadelphia Eagles merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers to become the Steagles, but it was not in 1944.
6. This team won its Super Bowl after moving from another city and had changed its name. In the city that they left, an expansion team emerged that bore the same name of the team they left behind.

Answer: Baltimore Ravens

After the 1995 season, owner Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns who had played in Cleveland for a long time to Baltimore. Baltimore had desired a team since the Colts packed up a truck in the middle of the night after the 1984 season, and bolted for Indianapolis. Cleveland had once hosted the Rams before they moved to Los Angeles and eventually St. Louis.

The Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa, Florida by the score of 34-7 over the New York Giants. The Cleveland Browns had been reinstated to the league the year before, in 1999. One of the agreements that the Ravens signed before they moved to Baltimore was that the city could retain the right to the team name, colors, and history.

They began with a 4-12 season including two losses to the Baltimore Ravens, which were both in the AFC Central.

It was really the first time a franchise actually played itself as the "old franchise" versus the "new franchise".
7. The original uniforms of this team were considered "Powder Blue", and they played their first season in Los Angeles in 1960. Their first Super Bowl appearance ended in a blow out loss for them.

Answer: San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers were also one of the original 1960 teams in the American Football League, that merged with the National Football League in 1970. The Chargers were famous for their "powder blue" uniforms with lightning bolts on them. They were the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960 and moved to San Diego in 1961. Dan Fouts was their quarterback in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when they won the AFC Western Division a few times but came up short.

They hosted the 1980-1981 AFC Championship game in a 34-27 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

A year later they visited Cincinatti in a loss in the 1981-1982 AFC Championship game. In the 1994-1995 season, after a 6-0 start, the Chargers stumbled down the stretch and were not favored to reach the Super Bowl.

They did win their division though (AFC West) as well as a thrilling AFC Divisional Playoff game over the Miami Dolphins. They stunned the conference when they won in Pittsburgh the following week in a 17-13 victory in the AFC Championship. They ended up getting rolled 49-26 by the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX.
8. What 2003 NFL team, began play as the New York Titans?

Answer: New York Jets

The New York Titans were yet another AFL team that appeared in 1960. They were known as the New Yok Titans and had a hard time drawing fans because of the cross town rival New York Giants. They became the New York Jets in 1962 and shocked the world in Super Bowl III with the AFL's first win over the NFL in a 16-7 victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts.

The Houston Oilers, another AFL original team, left Houston and ended up in Tennessee. They became the Titans, using the name long abandonded by the New York Jets.
9. This team won the NFL Championship in 1957. In 1991, they lost the opening day game 45-0 to the Washington Redskins on a Sunday Night Football game. They got to rematch the Redskins in Washington in the NFC Championship that same year, losing 41-10.

Answer: Detroit Lions

In 1957, quarterback Bobby Layne engineered a big comeback victory by the score of 31-27, in the NFL Championship over the San Francisco 49ers in San Francisco. The next time they played for a championship was the 1991 NFC Championship but fell short of Super Bowl XXVI when they were pulverized by the Redskins for the second time that year.

The Washington Redskins would go on to defeat the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI.
10. Which of the Florida teams was the first to win a Super Bowl after 1980?

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Miami Dolphins were a powerhouse in the 1970s, and made it to three consecutive Super Bowls, Super Bowl VI (a 24-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys), Super Bowl VII (their perfect season which ended in a 14-7 win over the Washington Redskins), and Super Bowl VIII (a 24-7 win over the Minnesota VIkings).

They had a solid run in the 1980s as well, with Dan Marino at quarterback but lost Super Bowl XXIX, 38-16 to the San Francisco 49ers in his only appearance. The Redskins also avenged their Super Bowl VII loss to the Dolphins 10 years later in Super Bowl XXVII, 27-17. David Woodley played quarterback for the Dolphins that year.

The irony of all of this is that during most of those years, the other team in Florida, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dwindled in obscurity.

They entered the league in 1976 and did not win a game until the following season, in 1977, with only two games left to go in the season. They began their history with an 0-26 record. They did have a brief moment in the sun when they reached the NFC Championship game in the 1979-1980 season and hosted the Los Angeles Rams.

They lost 9-0. They had a huge string of futility after that but came back to prominence in the late 1990's. They even rematched the now St. Louis Rams in the 1999-2000 season in the NFC Championship game. They lost that one in St. Louis, 11-6. The Buccaneers finally won their first Super Bowl, 48-21 over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. The Jacksonville Jaguars entered the league in 1995 and were in the AFC Championship game the very next year but lost in New England to the Patriots 20-6. They hosted the AFC Championship game in 1999 but lost 35-14 to the Tennessee Titans. The Florida Panthers are a hockey team and play in the NHL.
