Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The scientists in Pasadena, led by Doctor Adam Pierce, were able to control which aspect of their communications with the Firewalker research team?

Answer: Firewalker's camera

They had no communication capabilities with the team, save their ability to move the camera around. Doing this, they found one of the team's bodies lying dead in the interior of the volcano and saw a strange shadow moving around.
2. What mountain range was the volcano in?

Answer: Cascade Mountains

Pierce, Scully and Mulder flew through Seattle and then took a helicopter to the research center in the Cascade Mountains. The volcano, called Mt. Avalon, might have been based on Mount Saint Helens, but the terrain looked like it had much healthier vegetation around it than Mount Saint Helens does.
3. What was Pierce most interested in when he and the agents arrived at the research center?

Answer: the equipment

Scully and Mulder wanted to find the rest of the team, but Doctor Pierce went into the woods to look after the equipment that he felt responsible for.
4. What did Jesse suggest Doctor Daniel Trepkos suffered from?

Answer: bi-polar disease

She described him as running hot and cold, and then told Scully and Mulder that Trepkos had been her thesis advisor at the university before he asked her to assist him on the research.
5. What did Trepkos say just before killing Pierce?

Answer: "No one can leave."

Trepkos pushed Pierce up against a tree and wrapped a wire against his neck. After whispering this in Pierce's ear, Trepkos killed him and dropped the body. "We are not who we are" was from the first season episode, "Ice", which displayed some similarities to this episode, in that it focused on a group of isolated scientists and a possible infection among them.
6. What kind of life form did Mulder suggest Trepkos had found in the volcano?

Answer: silicone-based

Scully countered that every known organism was carbon based and that the idea of a silicone-based organism was only a popular myth. Mulder, driven by Trepkos' notes, contended that silicone reacts like carbon and that perhaps Trepkos had found such an organism in the extreme environment of the volcano.
7. Which member of the Firewalker Team got sick and collapsed before dying in the woods?

Answer: Peter Tanaka

Tanaka had looked ill, coughing and sweating, since Scully and Mulder had arrived. He continued to get worse, until he collapsed just after the tremor. As Ludwig and Mulder carried him out to be picked up the Search and Rescue team, he jumped off the stretcher and ran into the woods, falling down a hill.

As Ludwig and Mulder watched, an organism burst through his throat and killed him.
8. Talking to Mulder in the steam caves, what did Trepkos say Firewalker had brought back up from the volcano?

Answer: an elephant

When Mulder questioned this, Trepkos said it had brought back "an elephant, described by three blind men. First man touches the tail, and says it's a rope. The second man feels the rough leg; says it's a tree. Third man feels the trunk; says it's a snake." Mulder asked, "What about you? What do you think it is?" Trepkos replied, "I think the earth holds some truths best left buried."
9. Who tried to infect Scully?

Answer: Jesse O'Neil

As Trepkos was explaining to Mulder that the organism was a parasite searching for a way to continue life, Scully was struggling with Jesse. Jesse handcuffed herself to Scully so that when the organism burst through her neck, the spores would land on her and the parasite's life would continue.

When Scully couldn't get the handcuffs broken, she carried Jesse to a door where she could put her behind glass and protect herself from the spores. Mulder ran in just after Jesse died.
10. Trepkos was found dead.

Answer: false

Mulder let him leave, telling the bio-hazard group that there were only two survivors: Scully and himself. At the end of the episode, Trepkos carried Jesse's body down through the steam caves into the volcano and Mulder explained that the bodies of the two researchers were never found, so they were officially presumed dead.
