Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Twelve teams competed in the race's second Detour in the Gold Coast. Which of these teams completed 'Swim to the Beat', requiring that they learn a synchronized swimming routine?

Answer: Holly and Dolor

Only a third of the remaining teams (at this point in the race) ended up going for the more complex synchronized swimming task, and it dropped a number of them to the back of the pack. Sefa and Jessica, Jordan and Violeta, Chris and Aleisha, and Holly and Dolor went to the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre where they had to hop into the pool and complete a synchronized swimming routine to get their next clue. All other teams headed to an UGG store in the city to search through pairs of boots (one at a time) to find one containing a golden mousetrap.
2. Teams encountered their first U-Turn in Leg 4, and as per the rules for this season, it needed to be used by who of these?

Answer: The first team to encounter it

Landing on Palm Island for the second half of the race's fourth leg, teams had to complete one of two Detour tasks and then head to one final challenge separating them from the Pit Stop. When teams reached the Palm Island Airport Runway, however, they also found the race's first U-Turn, which required that the first team to arrive at it force another team to complete the side of the Detour they did not finish. Because of this, Shane and Deb had no choice but to pick a team (they chose Holly and Dolor) to go back and finish the 'On Time' task (involving making and delivering a local pizza).

It dropped them to ninth place.
3. During the 'Rehabilitation' Detour task in Leg 6, teams worked with which form of marine life on Fitzroy Island?

Answer: Sea turtles

While most teams opted to join the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on Fitzroy Island for their Leg 6 Detour task ('Rehabilitation'), Sefa and Jessica went down into the depths near the Great Barrier Reef to complete the other, 'Restoration', which had them ride Scuba-Doos onto the ocean floor. All teams working to help the turtles were required to properly clean turtle tank filters before deboning squid and fish for the critters to eat.
4. During the German-themed Detour in Hahndorf (in Leg 11), both tasks involved foodstuffs.

Answer: False

Travelling in and around Adelaide in Leg 11, teams visited the German-established city of Hahndorf for their Detour, a choice between 'Slap' and 'Snag' which required that teams either dance or eat for their next clue. In 'Slap', teams had to learn a traditional German Schuhplattler dance. Those who went with 'Snag' got to watch, but while they did they feasted on a massive platter of German meats and pretzels. Ashleigh and Amanda, Jordan and Violeta, Holly and Dolor, Brendon and Jackson, and Chris and Aleisha completed 'Slap' while MJ and Chelsea, Stan and Wayne, Skye-Blue and Jake, and Jaskirat and Anurag completed 'Snag'.
5. In Leg 13, teams finally made use of their earlier 'Brains' and 'Brawn' choices for a Detour. Were teams allowed to switch tasks despite their initial decisions?

Answer: Yes

In Leg 4, teams were required to make an early choice between 'Brains' and 'Brawn' which would return in a later leg. That leg turned out to be Leg 13 when teams went between either 'Brains' or 'Brawn', completing tasks with the Fourth Regiment of the Royal Australian Artillery in Townsville.

While 'Brawn' involved a tough obstacle course, 'Brains' involved using charts and math to hit a simulated target with a gun turret. Though Chris and Aleisha erroneously chose to partake in 'Brawn', they switched to 'Brains', losing valuable time traveling between tasks.

Interestingly, these tasks were followed by a second Detour in the same leg.
6. Which team was unable to complete either the 'Cuckoo' or 'Candy' Detour options in Leg 14?

Answer: Stan and Wayne

As teams raced through the Sunshine Coast region in Leg 14, Stan and Wayne found themselves lost and at the back of the pack throughout the leg and it meant that their delayed start at the ginger harvesting Road Block set them so far back that they were unable to complete either Detour task within the hours of operation.

They ended up arriving at the Pit Stop in last place, but were granted a Salvage Pass despite their misfortune. Teams heading into the Detour either learned how to make lollipops at a candy shop or searched through hundreds of cuckoo clocks.
7. Teams completing the 'Sweets' Detour option in Leg 16 were able to claim their clue from whose house?

Answer: Chilli's

Although the 'Sweets' Detour task, held at Coal River Farm in Cambridge, Tasmania, involved teams licking through a sheet of thin chocolate to find the location of their next clue, the task ended with teams actually needing to locate the next envelope at Chilli's house. Chilli, they would come to discover, was the name of the farm's goat; the clue was in his shack.

Interestingly, the search for Chilli's threw Holly and Dolor off-course enough to drop them to last place. They were eliminated shortly thereafter.
8. In Leg 18, which team was U-Turned and subsequently eliminated in Northern Tasmania?

Answer: MJ and Chelsea

At the end of Leg 18, teams faced their Detour at the Ashgrove Cheese Farm in Elizabeth Town, Tasmania. There, teams had the option to either search through hundreds of cows to find marked ear tags or they could perform a precise measurement task, slicing, weighing, and transporting cheese to get the right amount for their clue. Jaskirat and Anurag led Leg 18, so they were forced to use the U-Turn to make another team do both tasks.

They elected to send back MJ and Chelsea who, following the task, had enough trouble navigating to the Pit Stop to seal their fate.
9. Both Detour options in Leg 19 (in the Hunter Valley Region of New South Wales) were held in/on which of these?

Answer: Wineries

Leg 19 brought teams back to the mainland, and while they started their leg in Newcastle, teams were swiftly brought out to the lush wine regions of the Hunter Valley. After a string of coordination-based challenges, teams had a Detour which forced them to choose between the menial task of depitting two hundred olives and the complicated task of paddling a barrel out into a lake. All five remaining teams went for the olives.
10. The last U-Turn seen in the race was used on the Detour in Leg 21. It meant that Chris and Aleisha were required to eat which of these?

Answer: Eggs

The Detour for Leg 21, held on an emu farm outside the city of Dubbo, involved either herding emus into pens or eating several different types of eggs. While only Jaskirat and Anurag went with the eggs, Brendon and Jackson (who placed first) had the chance to use the U-Turn on last place team Chris and Aleisha.

It meant that the vegans needed to face their worst nightmare; Chris had to eat two quail eggs, two chicken eggs, two duck eggs, and two emu eggs before they raced to the Pit Stop.
