Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edward Philip Mott was a collector of which of these?

Answer: Art

A historian discusses the storied history of the Roanoke house and its earliest days, during which the rich personality of the colonial era, Edward Philip Mott, constructed the mansion for lavish uses. Edward, she states, hated being around people and built the mansion as far away from civilization as possible, finding the plot of land on the Roanoke River's edge to combat social anxiety. One of the most important things, Mott said, was constructing a series of underground passages in case of art thieves. That's when the incidents began, some of which seemed like mischief and some of which were much more dangerous to the builders. Nonetheless, Mott proceeded, alongside his American lover, to reside there.
2. Where did Mott hide his servants away?

Answer: In the storm cellar

It took only two days of living in the house before Mott experienced some weird occurrences. On the second night, the sound of glass breaking roused him from his sleep, and he headed downstairs to find one of his statues broken and all of his artwork torn apart. Assembling his slaves, his own rage was insurmountable. One of his slaves informed him that an older woman and a younger man were in the yard before his scream was heard.

He didn't believe them. Instead, he sent his house crew into the cellar, locked the door, and left them to think about what they had done.
3. What was the name of the only servant on Mott's roster who escaped Roanoke?

Answer: Guinness

What happened to Edward Phillip Mott was left to historians in second-hand accounts. That night, Mott was assaulted by the spirits of Roanoke who, capturing him and bringing him out to the front yard during the blood moon, consecrated the land with his blood, plunging a stake through his back and out the front of his chest before burning him on the fire.

His servant and lover, Guinness, escaped on horseback and told his story to police before bing framed for murder. The people in the root cellar would be found months later, having starved to death.

The house was left in the Mott Family for a century, though the lineage ended in 1952 in South Florida. Some attribute the Mott Family's sordid history to the events in Roanoke.
4. The Roanoke colonists damaged Matt and Shelby's vehicles to prevent their escape.

Answer: True

The mob circled the house as Matt and Shelby called the cops. Matt said that he would head out to the front to distract the colonists while Shelby took Flora and made a run for the truck outside. When the time came to execute the plan, however, Flora was taken right out of Shelby's hands by one of the members of the Chen Family who, creakily, carried her off into the upper floors. From upstairs, Matt watched as the colonists set fire to the vehicles outside.

Shelby ended up chasing the Chen girl downstairs, finding Flora left alone next to a wall. That's when they were surrounded.
5. Who assisted Matt and Shelby in escaping from the house?

Answer: Edward Mott

Matt and Shelby found that the ghosts were leading them through their own trap, generating fear in an attempt to make them helpless lambs to the slaughter. When they took refuge in the basement, however, they were greeted by Edward Phillip Mott who, grabbing a torch, said that he would lead them to safety through his underground passageways stretching beneath the house, even if only to prevent three more souls from forcing themselves upon his solitude.

They emerged outside and, desiring to take them no further, disappeared, leaving them alone in the night.
6. The hillbillies, after capturing Matt and Shelby, tried to offer which of these to them as food?

Answer: Human meat

It took next to no time before Matt, Shelby, and Flora were found and captured, this time by the hillbillies in the house nearby. They awakened inside with shotguns pointed towards them, and on a table in the middle of the room they found Elias, somehow still alive, but hastily patched up from all the arrow puncture wounds.

His leg had been amputated, and his arm had been torn off. He begged to die. Mama came in at that point, offering food to the new arrivals to welcome them. What they found was that she was trying to serve them rancid pieces of Elias. That's when they killed him; no reason to keep him alive.
7. For how many years have the hillbillies been assisting the ghostly colonists?

Answer: Two hundred years

The hillbillies, after killing Elias, told Matt and Shelby that they never should have bought the house, and the duo quickly says that they'll simply sign off the deed so that they can live in it instead; they don't want to be there. Unfortunately, the hillbillies don't really want to live their either.

Instead, they want to keep it empty to help The Butcher out. Their family made a deal with her almost two hundred years earlier. In return for helping the colonists consecrate the grounds every blood moon, their crops would flourish.

They would be handed over.
8. Matt, Shelby, and Flora were driven back toward the house to face The Butcher. Whose quick actions allowed them to grab a weapon and attempt escape?

Answer: Matt's

Lee, meanwhile, was still at the police station being questioned by the cops. She needed to stay there for two days, at the least, before she would be jailed or let go. During this time, she was kept in the interrogation room and repeatedly grilled for inconsistencies. Eventually she was let go and, at the time, she found the texts in her phone. Flora, she was notified, was safe. Matt, Shelby, and Flora were taken out into the woods in the hillbillies' truck and, in a scuffle, Matt was able to wrestle the gun from one of them, killing the driver and allowing them to race back into the woods.
9. According to The Butcher, who would be the first to be sacrificed?

Answer: Flora

Matt, Shelby, and Flora hid out in the woods attempting to hide from the remaining hillbilly, but a phone call from Lee gave their position away and, at gunpoint they were forced to continue onward. Lee, however, believed something was up and asked for a ride out to the house.
The hillbillies, seeking recompense for their murdered family member and fearing that they would run again, allowed Mama to wield a sledgehammer and crush Shelby's ankle, rendering her unable to flee. Shelby didn't remember much after that.
But they were taken back to the house where the colonists were waiting with their fire pit. The Butcher gave her condolences for the hillbillies' lost son before they hopped back in their truck and departed, leaving the victims to betaken care of. Flora was the first, and while Matt and Shelby were taken aside and Priscilla demanded Flora be last to go, The Butcher started her ceremony.
That was when Lee arrived...and her ride fled.
10. After the events in Roanoke, did Matt and Shelby return to Los Angeles?

Answer: Yes

Just before Flora was to be killed, The Butcher's son, Ambrose, took matters into his own hands, knocking his mother to the ground to stop her from shedding any more blood. He carried her into the fire and killed them both while the others watched on.
Edward Phillip Mott freed Matt and Shelby while Lee struck the man in the pig head down with one of the burned cars in the driveway, saving her daughter. They were all able to get inside and flee while The Butcher, covered in flames, chased them from the drive.

Matt claims it's a miracle; they were lucky to be alive. Shelby recognizes it as a nightmare. Both are grateful that they never need to go back again.

That night they escaped, after a trip to the hospital, they stayed in a motel room until they could get money wired from Shelby's sister to fly back to Los Angeles. Shelby would have nightmares for years afterwards.

To this day, she's not sure if she'll ever be rid of them.
