Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1980: This show only lasted two seasons. The main characters were Kip or Buffy, and Henry or Hildegarde. What was this show called?

Answer: Bosom Buddies

Tom Hanks played Kip (Buffy in drag) and Peter Scolari as Henry (Hildegard in drag). They dressed in drag to get a room at the Susan B. Anthony Hotel, which was for women only. Only Amy (Wendie Jo Sperber), who worked with them and lived at the hotel, knew who they were in the beginning. By the second season, everyone at the hotel knew their secret, and the drag element was no longer as necessary, but the show was canceled because the TV viewers lost interest.

Photo: I chose this photo as they dressed as women, and this picture is the female symbol.
2. 1981: What sitcom starred Nell Carter and a very young and adorable Joey Lawrence later in season three?

Answer: Gimme a Break

"Gimme a Break" starred Nell Carter as Nell Harper, who helped take care of Chief Kanisky (Dolph Sweet) per the request of his wife and Nell's friend, Margaret (Sharon Spelman - flashbacks only) before she died. Nell was the mother figure to the Chief's three teenage daughters, Katie (Kari Michaelson), Julie (Lauri Hendler), and Samantha (Lara Jill Miller). They took in Joey (Joey Lawrence) as a foster child in the third season, and later his brother Matthew (played by Joey Lawrence's brother Matthew Lawrence).

Photo: I chose this photo because the Kit Kat song is "Give me a break..."
3. 1982: My all-time favorite show came out this year because "sometimes you wanna go, where everybody knows your name." What show could this be?

Answer: Cheers

"Cheers" starred Ted Danson as Sam "Mayday" Malone, an alcoholic, ex-relief pitcher turned bar owner in Boston. His bartender was Ernie "Coach" Pantuso (Nicholas Colasanto), former coach for the Red Sox when Sam played. His waitress was Carla Tortelli (Rhea Perlman), a mean-spirited woman who was very fertile.

In comes Diana Chambers (Shelley Long), a pseudo-intellect who was stood up by her fiancé. Unable to do anything, she became another waitress at Cheers. Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger) was the know-it-all mailman who spent most of his time at the bar along with his buddy Norm Peterson (George Wendt), an out-of-work accountant.

In season three, Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammar) came to the bar to help Sam with his drinking problem. We soon learned he was also Diane's new boyfriend.

But that didn't last long as Diane was truly in love with Sam. In season three, Nicholas Colasanto passed away and was replaced in season four with Woody Tyberius Boyd (Woody Harrelson). Lilith Crane (Bebe Neuwirth) first appeared mid-season four as the woman Frasier couldn't stand but discovered when she let her hair down, he was extremely attracted to her.

They later married in season six. (Note: Bebe Neuwirth was only an official cast member in the credits for season ten). After season five, Shelley Long decided to leave the show and was replaced by Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley) in season six.
4. 1983: This show came from a skit on "The Carol Burnett Show" and starred Vicki Lawrence as Thelma Harper. What was it?

Answer: Mama's Family

"Mama's Family" was a skit on "The Carol Burnett Show" with Lawrence as Mama - Thelma Harper, Burnett as Eunice, and Betty White as Ellen (the rich daughter who was a snob). Both White and Burnett were also on the TV show in the beginning. Rue McClanahan played Frances, Thelma's younger sister. Living with Thelma on "Mama's Family" were her son, Vinton (Ken Berry), and in the beginning, his children Vinton "Buzz" Jr (Eric Brown) and Sonja (Karen Argoud). The children left the series after the first season. Naomi (Dorothy Lyman) was Vinton's girlfriend and then-wife. He called her Skeeter, and his mother called her Tramp. Later, Bubba (Allan Kayser) joined the cast as Thema's grandson (Eunice's son), who was released from juvenile hall and stayed with her because his parents moved to Florida. Later on, Beverly Archer also joined the cast as Iola, the next-door neighbor, and Thelma's best friend.

Photo: I chose this because they always showed the outside of the house at the beginning of the show.
5. 1984: I can't say who the main star of this show was; it would give the answer away. However, his character was an OBGYN, and his wife, Clair, was a lawyer. They had four children at first, and then a fifth older child in college came along as well. What show is this?

Answer: The Cosby Show

Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) and his wife Clair (Phylicia Rashad) had five children (albeit the oldest came later). Sondra (Sabrina Le Beauf) was the oldest and went to Princeton University. She dated and eventually married Elvin (Geoffrey Owens). They had twins Winnie and Nelson (named after Nelson Mandela and his wife).

The next oldest was Denise (Lisa Bonet), who was into her own thing and often flighty. She went to Africa for a while, where she met her husband Martin (Joseph C. Phillips), who was in the Navy.

He had a three-year-old daughter named Olivia (Raven-Symoné). Their only son Theodore "Theo" (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) struggled in school until later when he was diagnosed with dyslexia. Once he knew what he had, he was able to get help. Vanessa (Tempestt Bledsoe) was originally the tattle-tale, but as she got older, she was getting in trouble, such as when she got drunk.

The youngest child Rudith, or "Rudy", was initially supposed to be a boy, but Keshia Knight Pulliam won Bill Cosby over.

However, he decided to keep her name as Rudy.
6. 1985: What show had an older brother who was an underachiever picking on his younger sister, who was an overachiever, along with two other siblings, one of which came later in the series?

Answer: Growing Pains

Mike Seaver (Kirk Cameron) was a high school student at the start of the series. He goofed off, and had horrible grades. Meanwhile, his younger sister, Carol (Tracy Gold), also in high school, had straight As and spent most of her time studying. Their younger brother Ben (Jeremy Miller) looked up to Mike and often tag-teamed with him in playing jokes on Carol. Their father, Dr. Jason Seaver (Alan Thicke), was a psychiatrist who worked mainly out of an office at home. His wife, Maggie (Joanna Kerns), was a journalist who had recently returned to work. Later in season four, they had another daughter named Crissy (played by Ashley Johnson from season six on, when she was old enough to have lines). In those two years, Crissy became five years old. Ah, the magic of television!

7. 1986: Gordon Shumway, from the planet Melmac, was better known as who?

Answer: Alf

Alf stood for Alien Life Form. He crashed into the Tanners garage. Alf could not get back to his planet and lived with the Tanner family, who kept him hidden from the Alien Task Force. Willie (Max Wright) was a social worker, and at first, was against having ALF live with his family, especially since he was often a bad influence on their youngest son Brian (Benji Gregory). ALF also wanted to eat their cat, Lucky.

He once told them he wanted "a BLT - a bacon, Lucky, and tomato sandwich."
8. 1987: Danny Tanner's wife was killed by a drunk driver before the first episode. His best friend and brother-in-law moved in to help him take care of his three children. What show is this?

Answer: Full House

Danny Tanner (Bob Saget - RIP) had three children. Donna Jo, or "DJ", (Candace Cameron), was ten years old when the show started. Her catchphrase was, " Oh, Mylanta!" Stephanie Judith (Jodie Sweetin), the middle child, was five. Her catchphrase was "How rude!" The youngest was Michelle Elizabeth, who was nine months old and played by twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Michelle's catchphrase (once she could talk) was, "You got it, dude!"

Their uncle Jesse Cochran (John Stamos) first had long hair, came in on his bike, and liked girls and partying. He was obsessed with his hair and Elvis Presley. His last name was changed to Katsopolis (at the request of Stamos, who wanted to reflect his Greek heritage better). In the season two premiere, Stephanie was playing beauty salon and accidentally cut her uncle's hair. Over the years, Jesse became more focused. He met, dated, and married Rebecca "Becky" Donaldson (Lori Loughlin). Their wedding song was "Jailhouse Rock". They had twins Nicky and Alex (played by real-life twins Dylan and Blake Tuomy-Wilhoit). Despite being a comedy, the show tackled many complex topics such as child abuse, death, and teenage drinking.

9. 1988: This show starred Candance Bergen as a recovering alcoholic who worked at FYI as an investigative reporter, journalist, and news reporter. What show am I talking about?

Answer: Murphy Brown

"Murphy Brown" took place in Washington, DC. Murphy (Bergen) went through many secretaries throughout the ten-year run because she was so hard to work with. She was a huge fan of Aretha Franklin, who made a cameo appearance in season four. Her colleagues included Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford), a former Miss America. She was hired to replace Murphy when she was at the Betty Ford Clinic. Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) was a news reporter who was known for the fact he never smiled. Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) was an investigative reporter like Murphy, and they were good friends and competitive with each other. Of course, that's mainly because Murphy was an overachiever. Grant Shaud played Miles Silverberg, the very young executive producer. When he left the show for a couple of years (due to Shaud wanting to pursue other projects), Lily Tomlin took the executive producer job despite not having any news experience.

Eldin (Robert Pastorelli) painted Murphy's house, which took years to do. When Murphy had her son Avery, Eldin became her live-in nanny.
10. 1989: It was "a show about nothing." What is it?

Answer: Seinfeld

"Seinfeld" starred comedian Jerry Seinfeld as a stand-up comedian in New York City. Across the hall from him in his apartment was his friend Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), who came in without knocking and always ate Jerry's food. Jerry's best friend since high school, George Costanza (Jason Alexander), bragged about what he was even though he really wasn't, but someone who worked for the New York Yankees. Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) was Seinfeld's ex-girlfriend and now friend (though at one point they wanted to "mix the this with the that"). The show centered around these four and had no message, as it really was a show about nothing but very funny.

Photo: It was hard to find a good one for "Seinfeld", but in every episode, there is some reference to Superman (spoken or visual).
