Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season of the race started in which major U.S. city?

Answer: Los Angeles

Eleven new teams were brought together in the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California to begin this thirty-second race around the world, and once Phil gave the go, teams could race to their bags outside the venue, rip open their first clue, and hop into a cab to take them to LAX.

It was from there that teams could claim seats on a flight to the island of Trinidad. When they landed they could make their way into the town of Saint Augustine to find a 24-hour fruit stand and their next clue.
2. Arriving on the island of Trinidad in Leg 1, teams had to deliver which of these to a busy street festival?

Answer: Oil drums

Teams got to Trinidad late in the evening and found the 24-hour fruit stall in Saint Augustine to complete a quick task. For this, team members had to roll two oil drums (used to make steel pans) through the streets of Saint Augustine, taking a rough quarter-mile trip into a busy street party. Once the delivery was complete, they could find the party-goer dressed as the Midnight Robber and he would give them their next clue and tickets to the island of Tobago on one of two flights scheduled to depart in the morning.
3. In Nylon Pool, Tobago, teams searched the waters of the Caribbean for which of these?

Answer: Wooden fish

Leaving for Tobago shortly after sunrise, teams flew to Crown Point and then proceeded to a clue box waiting on Swallows Beach. Here, teams could meet with a boat captain and take a ride out to the Nylon Pool to take a dip for their next clue. It was there, searching through more than one hundred painted fish tethered in a stretch of water the size of a football field, that teams needed to find one with colouring and design matching the paint job of their own reference.

They could then use the four-digit number attached to their matching fish to open a lock and get their next clue.
4. How many Road Blocks did teams encounter in Trinidad and Tobago in Leg 1?

Answer: One

Heading out from Nylon Pool, teams returned to their boats and directed their captains to Pigeon Point. There, on the jetty, teams found the first Road Block task of the race, and for this one, participating racers needed to 'steel the show'. Team members had to learn how to play a piece of the Calypso song "Day-O" on the steel pan drum and perform it with a group of musicians in order to advance. Michelle, Maddison, Will, Frank, Chee, Gary, Cody, Eswar, Leo, Kaylynn, and Kellie completed this task.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the first Pit Stop of the race, getting eliminated in Tobago?

Answer: Nathan and Cody

To end off the first leg of the race, teams had to take a boat to Buccoo to collect a goat and race with it across the finish line at the Buccoo Integrated Facility. There, they could step on the Pit Stop mat and receive their first placement of the race.

After Chee completed the Road Block on his first attempt, he and Hung landed on the mat first and were shocked to receive their next clue as a prize. Although all the teams kept on racing, the last team to arrive on the mat, Nathan and Cody were still eliminated from the race.
6. Leg 2 of the race sent teams to what Colombian city?

Answer: Bogotá

Ripping open their clues at the first Pit Stop without taking a break, teams were told to fly to the Colombian capital city of Bogotá. All ten teams ended up on the same flight fourteen hundred miles southwest, landing in Bogotá to deal with a massive change in elevation.

They didn't need to look or travel far for their first clue; they could get it right outside the airport and then take a cab to the town of Nemocón to visit its salt mine, one of the largest in the world.
7. In Colombia in Leg 2, teams located items that they would be required to carry throughout the race. Which of these were they told to find?

Answer: Hourglasses

Reaching the Nemocón Salt Mine, teams found a unique task that would lean into a race mechanic not seen on the race in more than a decade. Searching through acres of underground passageways, teams had to locate either a ten or twenty-minute hourglass that they would be able to use on Yield mats found throughout the race, forcing another team to wait for the amount of time specified. Teams could only use this race mechanic once, leaving the hourglass behind for the selected competitors, so it would be up to them to determine when was the most advantageous.

Once teams grabbed their hourglasses, they would be able to stay the night in the mines and depart in one of two groups the following morning as determined by their completion of the hunt.
8. In Leg 2, teams could deliver a small Pre-Colombian trinket to an archaeology professor or which of these to a street broker in Colombia?

Answer: An emerald

Waking up and departing early for a day of tasks in Colombia, teams were told to proceed on foot to Templo Parroquial San Francisco de Asís. There, they needed to head to the top of the bell tower and find either a piece of Pre-Colombian art or an emerald. Depending on which item they chose, they would have to proceed to either Plazoleta del Rosario (for the emerald) or Universidad del Rosario (for the trinket) back in Bogotá to trade for their next clue.

Following this delivery, teams made their way to Escuela Nacional Circo Para Todos to find the first Yield mat of the race where, if one team chose, they could make use of their hourglass. None of them took the bait.
9. At the Colombian circus in Leg 2, teams completing the Road Block had to do which of these?

Answer: Tightrope walk

At Escuela Nacional Circo Para Todos, teams passed their Yield, moved into their Road Block task and joined the circus. For this challenge, one member of each team needed to dress up as a clown and head into the big top. After riding in the wheel of death, team members had to walk the tightrope from one side to the other (and back again) carrying a tray of glasses. If they could walk the tightrope without dropping anything, they could get their next clue. DeAngelo, Hung, Riley, Will, Aparna, Victoria, Alana, Frank, Haley, and LaVonne completed this task.
10. Which team was eliminated from the race in Colombia at the end of Leg 2?

Answer: Kellie and LaVonne

Finishing their Road Block, teams could take a cab to Carrera 26 #10-03 to search for one final challenge that would ask them to customize and decorate a volqueta. Once they did so and hooked up the vehicle's horn, they could make their way to the race's next Pit Stop, reachable by taxi at the Parque Nacional Enrique Olaya Herrera. Hung and Chee overtook DeAngelo and Gary at the final task and claimed their second consecutive win, this time earning a trip for two to Switzerland courtesy of Travelocity.

At the end of this leg, Kellie and LaVonne's taxi troubles kept them at the back of the pack and they were eliminated in tenth place.
