Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First Doctor

Answer: Abbot of Amboise

William Hartnell (1908-1975) was an actor also known for his work in films like "Carry On Sergeant" (1958) and "This Sporting Life" (1960).

He played the role of the Doctor's first incarnation from 1963 until 1966, starting with the premiere episode "An Unearthly Child". He would reprise the role briefly in the serial "The Three Doctors" (1972-1973) and several other actors would play the role after Hartnell's death. He travelled initially with his granddaughter Susan. Hartnell's interpretation of the doctor began as very irascible, almost mean, though it would soften somewhat over time.

Hartnell also played the role of the Abbot of Amboise in the 1966 serial "The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve". A plot point has companion Steven initially believing that the Abbot is the Doctor in disguise.
2. Second Doctor

Answer: Ramon Salamander

Patrick Troughton (1920-1987) was an actor who was also known for work in films such as "Chance of a Lifetime" (1950) and "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (1955).

He would play the second incarnation of the Doctor from 1966 to 1969 as what has been described as a "cosmic hobo". He would later reappear as the Doctor on several different occasions. During his time in the role the series would move away from a mix of historical and science fiction serials to all science fiction serials (even if set in the historical past).

Troughton would also portray dictator Ramon Salamander in the 1967-1968 serial "The Enemy of the World". Although more scenes together were planned, the Doctor and Salamander would only appear together (via split-screen) in the climax of the final episode.
3. Fourth Doctor

Answer: Meglos

Tom Baker (born 1934) is an actor who has also appeared in the 1971 film "Nicholas and Alexandra" as well as the 1990 television version of "The Silver Chair".

The fourth incarnation of the Doctor appeared on screen from 1974 to 1981. Several features of this Doctor are iconic including the enormous multi-colored scarf and a fondness for Jelly Babies. His tenure includes a story with no Companions and the season-long arc of the Key to Time.

Baker also portrayed the character of Meglos in the 1980 serial of the same name. Meglos is a cactus-like creature who takes on the form of the Doctor (imperfectly) as part of his plan of theft.
4. Fifth Doctor

Answer: Omega

Peter Davison (born 1951) is an actor who has also appeared in the BBC television adaptation of "All Creatures Great and Small".

He portrayed the fifth incarnation of the Doctor from 1981 to 1984. At the time, he was the youngest actor yet to portray the Doctor. He wore a cricketer's kit and also had a piece of celery in his lapel. His era represented more "back to basics" as opposed to what were seen as some of the "excesses" of the Tom Baker era.

Davison would also play the character of Omega, a legendary Gallifreyan, during the 1983 serial "Arc of Infinity". He would only play the character relatively briefly as Omega's body would soon begin to decay after taking the Doctor's form.
5. Sixth Doctor

Answer: Commander Maxil

Colin Baker (born 1943) is actor who has also appeared in the television series "The Brothers" (1972-1976).

Baker would play the sixth incarnation of the Doctor from 1984 to 1986. His interpretation was more brash and abrasive than several previous versions. He was also known for a bright, mismatched set of clothing that emphasized a question mark motif. His time as the Doctor included a season long serial The Trial of a Time Lord".

Unlike previous actors who portrayed other characters at the same time they played the Doctor, Colin Baker would portray Commander Maxil in 1983 (before he was chosen as the Doctor) in the serial "Arc of Infinity". In the serial, the Commander has captured the Doctor and his companion Nyssa.
6. Tenth Doctor

Answer: Lady Cassandra

David Tennant (born 1971) is an actor who has also starred in the television series "Broadchurch" (2013-2017).

He would play the tenth incarnation (not counting the War Doctor) of the Doctor from 2005 to 2010. He is known for wearing a dark suit and light colored overcoat and a pair of sneakers. He is a relatively youthful incarnation of the Doctor. During his time the series began the tradition of regular special episodes on Christmas night.

In the 2006 episode "New Earth", David Tennant (along with Billie Piper) briefly portray the character of Lady Cassandra (usually played by Zoe Wanamaker). Lady Cassandra briefly occupies both Tennant's and Piper's characters.
7. Twelfth Doctor

Answer: Caecillius

Peter Capaldi (born 1958) is an actor who has also appeared in the television series "The Thick of It" (2005-2012).

Capaldi portrayed the twelfth incarnation (not counting the War Doctor) from 2013 to 2017. He typically wears a dark colored suit and has used "sonic sunglasses" on a number of occasions. His interpretation has been described as more alien than many other Doctors. While he is still highly concerned with doing good, he is not necessarily as concerned with being liked.

Capaldi would appear as sculptor Lobus Caecilius in the 2008 episode "The Fires of Pompeii". Though the episode received mixed reviews, the twelfth Doctor refers to purposely picking Caecilius's face for his appearance.
8. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

Answer: Bret Vyon

Nicholas Courtney (1929-2011) was an actor who appeared in a wide variety of films and television programs during his career.

He appeared as Brigadier (originally Colonel) Alastair Lethbridge Stewart alongside the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and tenth Doctors between 1968 and 2008. He was known as a military man of action for statements such as "five rounds rapid". The character of the Brigadier would appear as a Cyberman avatar in 2014 alongside the twelfth Doctor.

Courtney would appear as Space Agent Bret Vyon, alongside the first incarnation of the Doctor, in the 1965-1966 serial "The Daleks' Master Plan".
9. The Master

Answer: Tremas

Anthony Ainley (1932-2004) was an actor who appeared in many television series and movies including the 1972 television series "Spyder's Web".

Ainley would portray the evil Time Lord, the Master from 1981 to 1989, continuing in a role that was started by Roger Delgado. Both suave and sophisticated, the Master also possesses a TARDIS and has shown many abilities including the power to hypnotize.

In 1981, Ainley portrayed Tremas (father of Companion Nyssa) in the serial "The Keeper of Traken". In the serial, the Master has burned through his regenerations and takes over the body of Tremas to continue his regeneration cycle.
10. Harry Sullivan

Answer: Lt. John Andrews

Ian Marter (1944-1986) was an actor who would also write the novelizations of several episodes of "Doctor Who".

Harry Sullivan was a Companion of the Fourth Doctor during the 1974-1975 season. The character was initially created in case the actor who played the fourth incarnation was unable to perform his own action scenes. With the casting of Tom Baker, Harry's role as a military surgeon was seen as unnecessary and he did not appear past 1975.

Ian Marter had earlier portrayed Lt. John Andrews in the 1973 serial "Carnival of Monsters".
